My Forgotten Coast Everything you want to see, hear, taste, smell, feel and know about the Florida Forgotten Coast! Marks, Florida including the areas of Port St.
(73)

Florida's Forgotten Coast is the name commonly used to refer to a quiet section of coastline stretching 130 miles through 4 counties (Wakulla, Franklin, Gulf & Bay) from Mexico Beach to St. Joe, Cape San Blas, Indian Pass, Apalachicola, St. George Island, Eastpoint, Carrabelle & Dog Island ...extending from the east Crawfordville, St. Marks, Shell Point, Mashes Sands, Panacea, Alligator Point, Bal

d Point, St. Teresa Beach and Lanark Village. This portion of Old Florida was indeed "forgotten" during the period when much of North Florida's coastline was developed...and subsequently over-developed. The Forgotten Coast is a special place today, more for what has been preserved that for what has been developed. Pristine bays, sugar white beaches, coastal marshlands, estuaries rich with sea life, and barrier islands with impressive dune formations...this is what the Forgotten Coast has to offer! In 1828, Florida's Territorial Governor William P. DuVal wrote a letter to Joseph M. White, a territorial delegate in which he stressed a great need for a lighthouse at St. Marks. White, in turn, wrote a letter to New Hampshire Senator Levi Woodbury, who chaired the Senate Committee on Commerce, reiterating the importance of establishing a light at St. Marks. Eleven days later, the committee issued a report, which recognized the town of St. Marks as an official port of entry and recommended the building of a lighthouse in the area. On May 23, 1828, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an act, which authorized the construction of a lighthouse at St. Marks and appropriated $6,000 for its construction.

"Beyond the beauty of external forms, there is more here: something that cannot be named, something ineffable, some deep inner essence. Whenever and wherever there is beauty, this inner essence shines through somehow. It only reveals itself to you when you are present. "
