EVER noticed those slits at the sides of a dog’s nose? Why do dogs have them?
Once again, nature( evolution )proves her elegance in the design of our dogs. I started looking more into evolution a while back, after reading a scientific journal, about a black Dog introduced to work in very cold temperatures, which slowly changed to white. White patches slowly formed. I know it had to do with the blood temperatures. I’m still looking for where I filed it away?? I found it amazing! I recently stumbled across something similar change watching a Killer whale documentary.

When we humans inhale and exhale, air comes in the same way it goes out. Any smells that come in through our mouths are forced out as we exhale. Any alternating of this, is affecting the Dogs naturally ability that evolution has improved on over years. It’s very important that when breed dogs, we work with evolution and not against. They should be fully functional and healthy, as there ancestors.

When a dog exhales through his nose, however, the exhaled air is released through those slits and off to the side so that nice, smelly air going into the dog’s nostrils doesn’t get diluted with the outgoing air. Put another way, the slits allow the dog to avoid smelling what he just exhaled.

The slits help the dog hold scent particles in the nostrils even as exhaled air passing out the slits creates a swirling air turbulence allowing interesting odors to be inhaled directly into the centre of each nostril. Since dogs breathe faster when trying to sniff a certain smell, they widen their nostrils to pull in more air which makes it possible for a dog searching for smells to have a steady stream of air coming in for up to 40 seconds, maybe even longer.

The slits also allow dogs to wiggle each nostril independently which gives them the ability to know which nostril a smell entered. This is how a dog can pinpoint where a smell is coming from, and why a dog searching for smells on the ground will weave back and forth as he follows a trail.

We all know the superb smelling abilities of dogs, but let’s use an analogy between scent and sight to really put it into perspective: What we as humans can see at a third of a mile, our dog can see more than 3,000 miles away and still see as well.

An elephant and a dog became pregnant at the same time. Three months later, the dog gave birth to six puppies. Six months after that, she was pregnant again, and nine months later, she gave birth to another dozen puppies. This pattern continued for some time.

Eighteen months later, the dog approached the elephant and asked, "Are you sure you're pregnant? We conceived on the same day. I've already given birth to a dozen puppies three times, and you're still expecting! What's going on?"

The elephant calmly replied, “There’s something important I need you to understand. What I carry isn’t a puppy; it’s an elephant. I only give birth once every two years, but when my baby touches the earth, the world will feel it. When it crosses a street, people will stop and stare in awe. What I carry is powerful and majestic."

She continued, “Don’t lose faith. When you see others receiving their rewards quickly, don’t feel jealous if yours hasn’t come yet. Don’t despair. Instead, remind yourself, 'My time is coming. And when it does, people will be amazed.'"

MORAL:
Natures timing is perfect. Everything comes when it is meant to—never too soon, never too late, but always at the right moment.

I post this every now and then and it’s a great way to help work with reactive dogs.. make it a game .. utilise the word yes for a marker if you don’t have a clicker.
Pair the word yes with food making it a promise to reward .. so every time the dog looks at a trigger ie a dog you say “yes” then reward.

How do you pair the word yes? You say yes then Give the dog a treat .. do this with his dinner so when he hears the words yes he associates it with food is coming. You can switch the reward to play instead if your pup is more play orientated .. or use both ( whatever works best for your pup) 🐾

This is such a wonderful idea from Wendy whom her and her husband Vincent fostered Tiny and Chihuahua who were emaciated that I had to pay $200 each for , they fostered them for me for many months giving them so much love and attention until they were ready for a new life with their new family.
If any of you out there are interested in getting behind this amazing project please it would be greatly appreciated not only by Wendy but by the hundreds and thousands of dogs who are constantly awaiting to be rescued from there chains and terrible lives. I can think of many that would benefit greatly from an app as such where people could help rescues in the process.
Even such a small amount as $5 could go such a long way in helping set this awesome project up..
we really need the help of the community more than ever as the copious numbers of dogs out there require urgent care and attention along with new homes ( loving homes ) .. thankyou Wendy and Vincent for caring so much - enough to want to help so hugely in the background with this amazing project you’ve put endless amount of hours into already setting up .. it would help so many dogs and rescues in the process.. 🙏🏽🐾🙏🏽🐾🙏🏽🐾🙏🏽

Please if you are able to donate even just a gold coin .. it would certainly be a huge help to get this project up and running 🐾

Do you LOVE animals, especially Dogs? Do you want to be part of a revolutionary new way of supporting dog rescue centres?
