How do we blanket 300 equine? We don't!

Only a few elderly and susceptible equine get blanketed at TMR. Most of our animals do just fine with a little extra hay over night.

FUN FACT FRIDAY!

Are you familiar with the many adaptations that help your horse stay warm during the cold winter months?

🌾 Hindgut digestion of hay produces the most heat, acting as a small furnace inside of the horse. This is why free choice; good quality hay is so important in the winter.

💪 Horses have a huge muscle mass and muscle activity produces heat. This includes running and playing and even shivering if their body temperature starts to drop. It is important to remember that these activities also will result in a bigger caloric demand so free choice hay and in some cases, grain, is often needed.

🧥 To blanket or not to blanket is a constant debate but either way, as it starts to get cold your horse will grow a thicker coat. If you decide to leave your horse unblanketed you may notice that they look “fluffy”. This is due to a phenomenon called piloerection where the hair stands up to better trap air within. Two layers of the coat also help with warmth. The inner layer is softer and has air pockets to create an insulating layer. The outer layer is coarse and has oils that keep moisture from penetrating the insulating layer and keep the horse warm.

⚖️ Wild horses go into the winter heavier than ideal, and the fat serves as an extra layer of insulation. However, if a horse is going to be kept heavily blanketed and in a barn during the cold weather months this is unnecessary and can lead to obesity related issues.

🦵Their distal limbs (below the knees and hocks) are made of mostly bones and tendons, tissues that are resistant to the cold temperatures.

🦶The hooves have an alternative route of blood circulation through larger vessels that can be used in low temperatures. This is why horses can stand in snow without detrimental effects.

👃A horse’s nose has a robust blood supply and is rounded so that it is less susceptible to frostbite than a human’s nose.

Happy New Year! We have BIG news for our supporters. Our New Year's goal is to start our own hay production. This is a huge step toward a sustainable future and we are going to need a lot of help from you. Our goal is to raise $150,000 for this fundraising campaign. This money will go towards the equipment and materials needed to plant and bale.

$150,000 is a lot, but we spend over $300,000 on hay each year and need to find a way to offset that cost in order to continue rescuing equine. TMR has suffered in the economic crisis the last several years but we know you will help us continue.

Last week we were able to get Wally, Eve, Sandy, Apphia, and Sky delivered to their new home. We've cherished our time with these sweet babies but are so happy to see them to a good home. The neighbor's horses were very excited to see new friends!

Wally was one of our 2024 geldings and we couldn't have made this huge step for him without the gelding fundraiser supporters!

Thank you to everyone that donated towards our Gelding Fundraiser this year! We managed to raise enough for 10 boys and have already finished the procedure for 8 of them including Re*****on (pictured).

Re*****on has been with TMR for several years after being rescued from a man that was threatening to shoot him and several others. He gets along great with our volunteers and is now in a pasture with several other recently gelded boys.

Gelding is so important for population control, reduced cancer risk, and has significant behavioral benefits. We look forward to getting more boys adopted this year and getting a goal set for our 2025 Fall Fundraiser!

Thinking of ways to support a nonprofit for next week's Giving Tuesday? Let us help!

1. Monetary donations- TMR Rescue operates on 1 million dollars a year. This helps us feed and care for 320 equine. Feed, farrier work, and veterinary bills can add up quickly and we always need assistance.

2. Gifting- We have an Amazon Wishlist and other opportunities for anyone that would like to send us specific items. Carrots and water are appreciated year round! https://a.co/6nH7MFR

3. Volunteering- Our next orientation is on December 7th after the Donkey Walk. Help us out with watering, mucking, cleaning, or let us utilize your skillsets! Message us to join!

4. Word of mouth- Sharing our posts, coming to our outreach events, and telling your friends and family about us allows us to extend our list of supporters.
