Lyra's Meatball and Special Care Fund RIP Lyra RIP Lyra, September 2012 - April 2021. Raising funds to keep Lyra on her special (& costly) diet and for her medical help. The colon was staying inside.

PayPal [email protected] mark for Lyra On the 11th of October 2012, a box of kittens was dumped on the doorstep of one of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s few private shelters. This shelter is run by a family of three, Fedin Gunić and his parents. Sadly, one of the feral dogs that roam around their land attacked one of the kittens....

The kitten, later named Lyra, had severe injuries, especially in her pelv

ic area where the dog’s jaws crushed her. She was in very bad shape indeed... her intestines were poking out of her stomach, and she did not have the use of her hind legs. Her breathing was too quick and she trembled terribly. She was taken to the vet, and had stitches and medication, and Fedin took her home where he and his parents took care of the little kitten 24 hours a day, monitoring her and keeping her warm and making sure she had fluids and food. The right rear leg seemed to be beyond repair, hanging loose, but her left rear leg improved quickly. However she developed an abscess on her right leg and very high fevers. The abscess burst on its own (a good thing), but her high fevers continued until early November until she finally began to turn the corner. She began to have a lot more mobility although her right rear leg had no function. It cannot be treated, and it’s possible at some point the leg will have to be amputated. But she's very playful and can run remarkably fast using her three legs. She grew big and healthy, a lovely playful girl. But then, on June 2nd, after a short bout of constipation, she developed a re**al prolapse, where a large section of her colon was pushed out, probably due to megacolon caused by an obstruction to her bowel because of her original injury. The situation was critical, but it was a Sunday and no vets were able to help. Fedin's mother kept gently pushing the colon back, using sugar water on the pr*****ed re**um and massaging gently. If the circulation became blocked her life was in danger. She was carefully monitored all night until Fedin brought her to the vet. Amazingly, she did not need immediate surgery. Lyra was put anti-biotics and on veterinary cat food for gastro-intestinal disorders, and it was recommended that she be kept on the diet for at least a month and then introduced to some ground beef and cooked liver and broth, and that she must never eat dry cat food again. The vet said Lyra will need a proper X-ray done (vet recommends Zagreb, Croatia) and after that corrective surgery. However, she has since been spayed, and nearly died due to how poorly she healed from the surgery, so it is clear she cannot have further surgery. This is a great pity, as her paralysed leg is often ulcerated, and needs constant care. It is a miracle she survived all this and is doing so well, but it has everything to do with the quality of care and love poured on her by the wonderful Gunić family, and they need help to continue her care. She’s had a number of bad moments and several operations, and must live on a special diet and veterinary supplements for her bowel for the rest of her life. The Gunić family have a private shelter for dogs and cats in the Kozarac and Prijedor municipality of Bosnia-Herzegovina (a place where some of the worst war crimes and crimes against humanity occurred in Europe since WW2.) For more information about them, go here: Safe Haven for Dogs and Cats: http://inmemoryofvucko.org/2013/01/06/safe-haven-for-dogs-and-cats-needs-your-help/

They have been helping and taking care of abandoned dogs for many years, and in 2004 they built a shelter that now provides foster care for almost 60 dogs and 40 cats. They do all this without having any material or financial benefit. They built the shelter using savings and bank loans, and have managed until recently to keep the shelter running on the small salary of Fedin’s mother as well as income from his father's shoe repair shop. But they are now financially exhausted. Donations are always needed for food for the animals in their care, for veterinary expenses and for upkeep of the shelter. The saddest day. Lyra died at 4 AM this morning, 16th April. Her death was a shock, totally unexpected but this sweetheart had so many internal injuries from her attack as a kitten, anything could have happened. Thank you to everyone who donated to help this beautiful cat have a happy life, thank you to Fedin and family for the 24/7 care they gave. Lyra was buried under this rose bush, she spent many Summers, Springs and early Autumns on the balcony just above the rose bush, curious about the sparrows that alighted because of the food Fedin and his family left there for them.

Rest in Peace beautiful Lyra. You will always be in my heart 💔

Perhaps in her memory we could send some money to support the other cats in the Fedin cat shelter? You can donate directly to [email protected], and mark for ‘cats’.

I've made a photo album of some photos taken during her too short life, you can visit here, there are a couple of photos of when I was there with her. https://www.facebook.com/groups/AWAbosnia/permalink/2160434630760629/

Lyra needs help. Can anyone offer to sponsor or donate towards the special wet GI food she needs to prevent her megacolon issues? She's had FIVE surgeries due to megacolon (she was rescued from a terrifying dog attack when she was just a tiny kitten). It's 303 euros for four months worth of food. Can anyone make a one off donation? Or offer to sponsor her? Please lets ensure she doesn't go through another surgery EVER again. If you can help, donations to [email protected] and mark for LYRA

Hello everyone, I know it's been so long since I said hello here but my life is pretty busy with all the things Dad has to do to keep me away from that horrible vet!
I still have mega colon symptoms and would you believe that Dad keeps a journal of all my e***as :( I need one every 2-4 days or I'll be in trouble....and then there is all the frequent wiping with baby wipes which isn't nearly as bad as the horrible e***as but I am very patient with everything. The GOOD thing is I get is fed 5-6 small meals throughout the day and Dad's mom gives me lactulose syrup and water twice during a day. They say I get mischievous when I feel good, but who wouldn't? And that I'm very spoiled but look at me, I'm wonderful : )

I must eat special wet food which costs about 70 euros per month... is there anyone who could help a little with this? I would be SOOOOO grateful. You can send it to [email protected] and mark for me, Lyra

Look at me! Aren't I beautiful! And this was when I was SICK. I'm drop dead gorgeous when I'm well :-)

I've not pooped for 48 hours and have colics again but not as bad as before but it's a symptom :( I show signs of constipation and Dad is able to help a little but has to take me to the vet for something horrible called an e***a tomorrow morning ( vet said that I might need these if constipation keeps recurring...) and also sutures should be removed. However Dad would need to have at home ready this product for me... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Feline-E***a-Pet-Ema-for-Cats-6ml-single-use-/301192668407
Can anyone help out?

Yay! I'm off antibiotics today, as soon as Dad opened my crate I escaped it and ran to check on my favourite spots. I still have some colics but they are rare, also I got to eat proper food today, it was first time after 4 days of nutri-plus gel. I'm hoping it's going to be possible to have the special GI wet food diet but it's expensive and maybe someone is willing to help out with 10 euros a month towards this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=11&v=30fThsN3tzM
