Rabbit Rabbit October!

Thank you to HRS volunteer Rachel A. for this fantastic graphic. Please don’t impulsively get a rabbit for Easter before you’re ready for the commitment – which includes paying for veterinary expenses. Visit houserabbit.org to download this graphic and others to share on your own social media to help get the word out about Easter and rabbits!

Anyone considering bringing home a rabbit should know:

• Rabbits have an average lifespan of 8-14 years.
• Rabbits must have an adult as their primary caregiver.
• Most children lose interest in a live rabbit after only a few weeks.
• Rabbits need to be spayed/neutered to prevent cancer and unwanted litters. Up to 80% of female rabbits will develop uterine cancer by age 4-6 if not spayed.
• Rabbits need regular veterinary care by a vet with additional training in exotics.
• Rabbits need to be vaccinated against RHDV2 annually.
• Rabbits require a daily diet of hay, pellets, and fresh vegetables.
• Rabbits need to live inside the home for their safety and health, with 2-4 hours of exercise time in a bunny-proofed environment each day.
• Rabbits are not “low-maintenance” pets — they need as much care and attention as dogs and cats. It can take longer to bond with them since they are prey animals and can be more fearful.
• According to an ASPCA study, rabbits are more expensive to own than cats or guinea pigs — coming just after dogs in expense.
• Rabbits are the third most frequently surrendered animal at shelters, and the third most euthanized.

For those who have thoroughly educated themselves about rabbit care and have decided to share their home with a rabbit, please adopt from your local shelter or rabbit rescue! 💖🐰

The March Madness

The mating period of European hares starts end of January, beginning of February and ends end of July, beginning of August. The height of the breeding season, is known as "March madness", when the normally nocturnal bucks are forced to be active in the daytime. The boxing usually occurs when a male is being too persistent with a female, chasing her across fields in an attempt to mate.

Right at the beginning of the hare breeding season, in January, is also the best time to see the constellation Lepus.

Very happy with how this piece came out! :)

Today’s the day! It’s Giving Tuesday!
This year, we're focusing on raising funds for Rojo's Medical Fund. This fund saves hundreds of rabbits each year here at HRRN.

Popcorn was found wandering the streets of Pflugerville, and had a severe case of sore hocks. The infection penetrated his bones, but our team quickly put him on a regimen of three pain medications and two antibiotics. We are closely monitoring his progress with weekly check-ups, cleaning out his wounds and applying antibiotic ointment as needed. The vets wrap his feet in different colored wrap each week.
Despite these challenges, he is eating well and his mobility is improving as his feet continue to heal.
Total‌ ‌Cost for Popcorns Medical Care:‌ ‌‌$1,335.27
