A Guide to Baby Rabbits with diarrhoea

Fudge and Snowy were both only 6 weeks when they both lost their lives and this was due to diarrheoa. It is vitally important that rabbits under six weeks are only fed by their mum or have small amounts of food and plenty of hay. Grass shouldnt be introduced to them till they are a bit older. Also green vegetables shouldnt be introduced either till they are a few weeks older and even then only in very small amounts till you know how their tummies react to them. If a rabbit does get diarrheoa either baby junior or adult pellets should be totally removed and they should be given 100% hay as hay is the best food for their diet. When diarrheoa passes pellets can be introduced but even then their diet should be 80% hay based.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

A Guide before choosing a Rabbit

Before you decide to take a Rabbit into your family home please consider the following information.

Can you afford to keep your Rabbit many Rabbits are purchased then taken back to a pet store because owners cannot afford to keep them.

A Rabbit is a long term commitment Rabbits can live for 8 to 12 years if they are given the right conditions unless health conditions shorten their life span

Consider purchasing Rabbits in pairs as Rabbits need companions or a lot of attention from their owners

Please ensure you insist on finding out the s*x of your Rabbit especially if they are the male species. It is important to consider that males will fight if kept together till their death. Females can also be quite aggressive. Please see below for information on help to prevent this.

Please consider neuturing a male rabbit or spaying a female rabbit with a qualified Rabbit Vet as this can help them be less aggressive. It also prevents female cancers when a female rabbit is spayed.

Rabbits need to be registered at a local Vets or PDSA if you qualify for their treatment. Please contact your local PDSA for more information.

Rabbit insurance is a must Rabbits can and do get ill.

Do you have an adequate Rabbit Cage or Hutch where rabbits have enough room to hop 3 spaces and are able to stand on their hind legs and the right accessories for food water hay and plenty of toys to keep them entertained when you cannot be around them.

Do you have enough space for your rabbit if a rabbit is kept indoors they should have free access to a garden or outdoor area that is securely fenced off from predators

When you go away on vacation please ensure you look for a Pet Sitting service that has excellent references and experience of looking after rabbits especially. Ensure they are CRB checked as they may be coming into your home.

Meet with them and ask as many questions as possible because they will be your Rabbit carers while you are away. It is very important you are confident and secure about leaving them in their care.

Pass on an emergency contact number for any problems that may arise and the phone number of your local Vet.

Our Story So Far

Almost seven years ago my eldest daughter was offered a bunny from her friend as her grandad bred bunnies. I reluctantly agreed and told her as long as she was looking after the bunny and I didnt have to hold the bunny she could have one. When her friends grandad brought us the bunny it was a cute little black and white one but she was offered a white one too as it was his companion so we agreed to take the two instead of the one. The black and white one was a boy and the white one a girl and we named them Alvin and Beth and for quite a few months they got on well together.

Christmas Day Alvin seemed to be really quiet and looked really ill so we kept a close eye on him. A few hours later Alvin moved to the other side of the cage and the straw started to move Alvin had given birth to 3 kits who we later named Smudge, Rainbow and Starburst. Alvin wasnt in fact a boy she was a girl so we renamed her Alvina. After many consultations with my daughters friends we renamed Beth as Jimbob as he was a boy.

Alvina went onto have another two kits who we named Dewdrop and Stardrop and on boxing day she gave birth to Honey.Three months later we adopted our first lop rabbit who we named Snowflake and she got on very well with the others at first. Two months after that we adopted another lop rabbit who we named Snowball. In September 2015 Snowball gave birth to 4 kits who we named Snowy, Fudge, Snowdrop and Pebbles somehow she had got together with one of the male bunnies we will never know how and who it was though.

Now comes the sad part we lost Dewdrop at 2 to suspected bloat it was so sudden it was too late to get her to a vet. We lost Snowy and Fudge at 6 weeks old to diarrhoea. When Rainbow was three we lost him to a bleed on the head which was also very sudden. At 3 and a half years old we lost Starburst we believe it was just his time to leave us at 1 year old he was diagnosed with a deformed jaw so he was always at the vets with his teeth and his eyes. At 4 years old we lost Stardrop to Headtilt he only survived a few months after being diagnosed with it. It was awful seeing him so ill, in hindsight maybe in this case euthanasia would have been the kindest thing to do, but at the time we couldn’t bear to do it. At 5 years old we lost Alvina but we found her just permanently asleep one day she had died in her sleep. At 4 and a half years old we lost Snowflake to we believe natural causes and she too died in her sleep.
