Samson is home! The surgery went well and we are so grateful the wolf pack is finally together again.🥹
Mahalo nui loa to the entire team at the Waipahu Waikele Pet Hospital. Their patience, professionalism, compassion and loving kindness made the entire ordeal a smooth one. We can’t recommend them enough.🙏🏽
If there is ONE thing I can recommend to all fellow dog owners: get pet insurance when your dog is healthy! We enrolled Samson in Embrace Pet Insurance (via USAA) five years ago, and thank goodness we did! It allowed us to give Samson the level of care he deserves.♥️
Finally, thanks to all for the show of support, the check-ins and kind words. It got us through, believe me. 😘

Pets and Medications... it can be a difficult task, and we have all been there! Just take a moment to breathe and watch this video for some helpful methods to make the experience as easy as possible.
_____________________________________________________________________
Method 1: Hide with Food
Place the pill in a soft/tasty treat or a treat pocket. Give a total of 3 treats with the pill in the second one, it's pretty sneaky right?
Pro Tip:
1) Be sure the medication is safe to give with food.
2) Some pills may have an unpleasant odor or taste that can cross contaminate the treats. So when giving to your pet try using one hand to touch the treats and the other for the pill.
Even then some pets will be too clever for this to work. So the next best option is to...
_____________________________________________________________________
Method 2: Direct Pilling
With this method it's important to keep in mind your pets comfort levels. A negative experience will make it more difficult the next time.
WHEN PILLING DON'T
❌Use excessive force
❌Remove from hiding
❌Interrupt eating
CREATE A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE
✔️Let them approach you
✔️Touch the head and mouth
✔️Reward with treats/petting
As they become comfortable, use one hand to hold and tilt their head upward, and insert the pill (with your other hand) as far back on the tongue as possible.
*A second person can help comfort your pet and offer some gentle restraint to reduce the risk of injury.
_______________________________________________________________________
Lastly, once the pill has been taken you can wait and observe to see if your pet has swallowed. If not you gently rub the bottom of their chin or blow on their nose to trigger the swallowing reflex. After the medication has been taken be sure to offer a reward to create positive association. *The direct pilling method can also be used for liquid medications.
REMEMBER
-Stop immediately if your pet shows signs of discomfort or aggression.
Symptom Awareness: Scooting
Have you ever seen your dog scooting their bottom across the floor?
Believe it or not, they are not trying to get a laugh. It can mean that their anal glands are impacted or they may have infected anal glands. There are a some symptoms to look out for that may indicate a trip to the vet such as:
-butt scooting
-excessive licking
-pain while defecating
-swelling or bump next to rectum
-blood or pus on their stool or places in the house.
After examining your pet we'll recommend the next steps to take in providing the care they need. Call us at any one of our locations!

Happy Howl-o-ween from Pet Hospitals of Hawaii!
Here are some helpful tips to help keep your pets safe during the trick or treating!
🎃 Stash Treats🎃
Chocolate in ALL forms (especially dark and baking chocolate) can be very dangerous for cats and dogs. Sugar-free candies containing the sugar substitute xylitol, can also cause serious health problems.
🎃 Check Costume🎃
Dressing up is fun, but when choosing a costume for your pet be sure that it’s both cute and comfortable! Be sure that your pet’s costume doesn’t limit their movement, sight, or ability to breathe. Don’t forget to be lookout for any parts that could present as a choking hazard for your furry one.
🎃 Update Info🎃
When opening the door for trick or treaters, pay extra caution that your dog or cat doesn’t dart outside! Now is a good time to update your pet’s collar ID and microchip.
We wish you all a safe and fun Halloween! 👻🎃💀🧛♂️

Another Day, Another Dental!
Just like human dental cleanings, X-Rays are also necessary for pet dental cleanings to further examine bone structure and check for any periodontal disease under the gumline. After X-rays are taken if there are any diseased teeth they will either be treated or extracted. 🦷
