I wondered why so many bite calls included the mention of a dog licking or “kissing the child.” I became curious if there was a correlation and if so I wanted to understand more. Was a lick a “kiss?” Or was it possibly a “dismiss?” Licking can be many things. Grooming, care taking, self-soothing, appeasement — but what about distance increasing or a cut off cue?

I began asking questions like: “Can you describe a situation where you notice your dog licks your child? Would you describe the lick as fast? Slow? Hard? Soft? Frantic? Have you ever felt that this interaction was too intense? If so, can you tell me more?”

In gathering more information I found that the children were often newly crawling and that they had been able to approach the dog

Have kids? Have a dog? What do you do to ensure they’re safe?

A cosmetic surgeon once told me that he dreads Sunday night phone calls. They are, almost always, about kids who need their faces put back together after being bitten by a dog. He said it breaks his heart. It breaks my heart too, thinking of the hundreds of cases I saw where the owner [

**FOR ALL PARENTS WITH CHILDREN AND A DOG**

In light of recent events, Jen, Helen and I had an overwhelming urge to come together to share our insights into trauma that can be experienced around family dogs.

Tragedies between dogs and children do happen - in so many forms - and when they do, it can send a ripple effect of worry and concern to all families sharing their lives with their beloved dogs.

In this 30min chat, we discuss insights into spotting early warning signs that may spell trouble, and identifying when it’s time to call a family dog specialist for help. Plus, we share how to be proactive in your home - with 3 important ways parents can increase safety and decrease risk (and stress!) for the whole family.

Dog licks are often thought of as doggy kisses. But, it’s actually something to take a step back and notice. And could sometimes be considered a, “Kiss to Dismiss” (more on that below). These licks do trigger some questions that may seem a bit silly to ask in response. Something like, “Describe the licks for me. Fast, slow, and then does the dog move away?”
“Is it a full tongue or a little bit?”
“Full tongue lick or quick flick?”
“Is the child sitting and the dog approaches or vice versa, what level of mobility does the child have, is food present or remnant?

There’s many questions! But, these questions help us gather valuable information to help us understand what the dog may be communicating. At Family Paws Parent Education, we want to help parents consider and recognize that dog licks may not always be what we think they are, “affectionate kisses”, or indications of “love,” but could have other meanings. We refer to this as “Kiss to Dismiss”. If you are curious of these doggy “kisses” and if they are a “Kiss to Dismiss”, ask yourself,
đŸ¶ Is your dog in need of space? (what just happened? Did your baby crawl closer to your dog?)
đŸ¶ Is your dog in need of space and there is a reason they may choose not to move? (example: comfy spot, resource, pain)
đŸ¶ Does this licking deter closeness or lead to an increase in space?

Thank you, Steve Bishop of Bishops Gate Dog Training for this graphic! Steve is also a Family Paws Parent Educator.
We do not recommend baby and dogs interact as shown in these illustrations. Never allow your baby to crawl up to or freely explore your dog in this way.

This is big news! Please share with your birthing professionals!

Many expecting families with dogs have questions as they prepare for life with baby. We know birth professionals are often asked questions about preparing with the dog and how to navigate introductions between dog and baby. Wouldn’t it be great to have resources and information to refer to and answer those questions? This is what our Dog Aware birth professionals 4 part course is all about. Dog and baby situations can be complex, emotional and sometimes dangerous. We believe the connection and collaboration between birth professionals and dog professionals is essential to best support families with dogs.

I invite you to check out more about this course and register at the link below.👇
