Great information from Himalayan Yak Chews!

Why Does My Dog Need to chew?

Chewing offers significant benefits for your dog, including dental health, mental stimulation, and supporting natural instincts. Long-term chews should be tasty and keep your dog's attention for over 10 minutes.

There are two types: digestible and non-digestible. Digestible chews, like yak or antler chews, can be eaten and absorbed by the body. Non-digestible chews, such as rawhide, nylabone, or cow hoof, should not be swallowed and can be dangerous.

Why Long-Term Chews Should Be Part Of Your Dog’s Diet

Chewing is a natural instinct for dogs, and they do it for various reasons. If left unsupervised, dogs may chew on unsafe items like wooden sticks, which can cause mouth injuries and gastrointestinal issues. Instead, provide safe, natural, digestible chews such as yak milk chews, antlers, and all-natural skin chews. These chews mimic a dog's natural diet and offer essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, calcium, and protein.

In the wild, dogs are hunters and scavengers, instinctively chewing on parts of their prey. This behavior helps them break down their food and extract nutrients. By providing natural chews, you can satisfy your dog's hunting instincts and support their nutritional needs.

Chewing Supports Mental Well-Being - Chewing boosts a dog’s well-being by releasing serotonin and dopamine, which support mental health. All dogs benefit from chewing, especially puppies. It helps calm them when separated from their mother and littermates and alleviates teething pain.

Chewing to Beat Boredom - Chewing promotes mental stimulation, engaging your dog in active concentration. Mental activity tires dogs more quickly than physical exercise. While not a replacement for physical exercise, chewing is helpful on rainy days or when outdoor activity isn't possible. The act of chewing requires dogs to navigate and strategize, which tires them out mentally.

Chewing to Promote Dental Health - Chewing promotes saliva production, which helps flush away bacteria responsible for bad breath and impacts cardiovascular health. It also improves dental health by reducing plaque and tartar build-up. In the wild, dogs' prey provided a natural brushing effect, which domesticated dogs lack. Long-term chews can fill this void, scraping teeth and removing debris. Chewing also exercises jaw muscles, promoting jaw bone health. Encouraging chewing enhances your dog's overall health.

Keep Calm, And Chew On

Appropriate chewing is an important part of your dog’s daily routine. It promotes overall well-being, dental health, mental stimulation and supports their natural instincts for chewing. So chew on!

Something everyone should know👇

We should always avoid putting dogs in uncomfortable situations. Regardless of whether they're muzzled or not.

Just because a muzzle negates the risk to others, doesn’t mean that it changes the way our dogs FEEL!

It’s so important to treat your dog as you would if there was still a high risk of injury to another being because in doing so you will be more likely to keep your dog out of situations you know they’re unlikely to be able to cope with.

👉 Your dog will still be uncomfortable with dogs even if they're muzzled.

👉 With a muzzle on, your dog will still be uncomfortable at the vet.

👉 If your dog was so fearful they tried to bite your neighbour before, they still might try with a muzzle on.

A muzzle is a MANAGEMENT TOOL that keeps dogs and others safe, but a muzzle alone doesn’t create emotional change. 💕

Putting on a muzzle doesn't mean we can throw everything at our dogs that we couldn't before, just because the risk to others is lower. We help our dogs grow in confidence and feel safe, not them. We do it with good management, great, ethical training, and considering whether our dogs will enjoy our situations.

Let me know if you agree! 💗

I’m not sure how many times we can tell people to keep their dogs on lead if they have ZERO recall. I am sick of people thinking that this is acceptable! I mean, how bloody hard is it?

Walking this morning with 4 dogs, all of whom have excellent recall. A black scruffy dog comes flying towards us, muzzled but growling and snarling. 2 of my dogs have anxiety issues so I immediately called them away and put 1 on lead.

However, this dog was full on and was in their face so 1 of mine snapped back. The dog didn’t relent but just carried on trying to get to them.

The owner of course was walking over just calling ‘Max’, ‘Max’, ‘Max’ - needless to say, Max had zero recall!

I tried to get my dogs away from her dog but he wasn’t giving up, even when mine chased him away, he came straight back.

The owner finally arrived and tried to grab her dog but failed! I asked if her dog had any recall and she said no. I said she should keep him on a lead in that case. Nothing, no reply. After a few ‘FFS’s from me, she finally got hold of her dog and led him away which was followed up with a ‘No apology then?’ Comment from me.

For your dogs sake, train it or keep it on lead. If I had an anxious dog who reacted aggressively (As many do), this woman’s dog would be at the vets right now and we know whose fault it would be!

Approximately 10.45 today at Morgans Hill near Smallgrain. 2 women, 1 blonde and 1 grey hair, with 3 dogs. Dog with zero recall was max, a muzzled black scruffy dog.
