Bama
Bama is a little Dachshund that was brought to the ANIC 2 weeks ago for severe neck pain that would not improve with medications. We were able to do a CT of her neck and found a HUGE mineralized (looks like bone) disk that had ruptured and was pushing on her spinal cord in her neck. Immediately after surgery she was wagging her tail and showing improvements, but she just came back for her 2 week recheck and suture removal and she is like a new dog!
Just yesterday, Rudy came to The ANIC as an emergency. Over the previous 24 hours, Rudy’s back legs became weaker and weaker and his condition was rapidly progressing towards paralysis. Thanks to our rapid response on-call staff over the weekend, we were able to take Rudy to emergency surgery that morning to relieve a severe disc herniation that was causing compression of his spinal cord. We spoiled him overnight, kept him comfy, and we just about jumped for joy seeing him regain the ability to walk less than 24 hours post-op. Take a look at Rudy walking on his own this morning! (Sling in place just incase he slips) Just as dad expressed how happy he was with his quick referral, we are so glad Rudy found his way to us for help!
We got an update from a recent surgical patient of ours who is doing great during her recovery 6 weeks after spinal surgery.
Another ANIC New Mexico Success! Ozzie was a 9 year old Mixed breed dog who was presented to us last week for a history of progressive neck pain and inability to walk affecting all limbs, but significantly worse on the right side. We were concerned he could have a disk herniation, but could not rule out the possibility of a tumor, inflammation or infection. We performed an MRI and CT scan and found a HUGE disk herniation on the right side of the spinal canal causing marked compression of the spinal cord. Ozzie went to surgery and within 12 hours he was out of pain, sitting up and eating. Within 24 hours later he was happy and standing for treats (video below). His strength continued to improve, and although he was not completely normal by the time he went home, he has made an impressive recovery during hospitalization. We plan to see Ozzie in a few weeks for his suture removal and expect that he will be even stronger.
Progress from Milton
On June 9th, we told you the story of Milton, the sweet terrier that presented for the inability to use his hind limbs. The first video in this series shows his status 4 days following surgery. He has the ability to use his hind limbs (yay!), but he is not able to support his own weight completely, he is unstable on his feet, and he scuffs them fairly frequently. The second video in the series shows him 15 days after his operation. He is supporting himself well with little-to-no help from his human, he doesn’t stumble, and he doesn’t appear to be scuffing his feet! Of course, that tail of his never stopped moving, and we hope it doesn’t stop anytime soon. Video/Photo credit to Milton's owner; Music: "Kitty in the Window" by Podington Bear
We love happy dachshunds here at The ANIC New Mexico. Gina had surgery to address a herniated disc in her back 2 weeks ago. She came to us unable to walk, but is now well on her way to recovery - as you can see by her happily wagging tail (accompanied by her sister Nina).
Dodger came by to say Hi and show off today - 1 year after we first met him at The ANIC. We first shared his story in April 2016
Sid Goes Home After Surgery
Here is a success story to start your week off with a smile: Sid had surgery at The ANIC New Mexico last week for a herniated intervertebral disc in his neck. He was unable to stand or walk when he arrived, but went home trotting and wagging his tail.
