Adopting your first pet? Wonderful! But first, it is important to have an honest conversation with yourself. Answering these questions openly will help you decide what type of pet and what breed is the right match for you.

🔸 How much time can I dedicate every day to my new companion?
🔹 If your schedule is usually packed, perhaps a cat will be a better choice for you rather than a dog.

🔸 How much budget can I allocate towards pet food, pet grooming, and vet bills?
🔹 Some pet breeds are quite expensive to maintain and care for. On a limited budget, choose a shorthaired small to medium-sized dog or a shorthaired cat to reduce the pet food and pet grooming expenses. Also, consider the health issues that are typical for some breeds, which could potentially add to your vet bills.

🔸 Am I an active and outdoorsy type, or do I prefer to spend my free time at home?
🔹 If the outdoors and sports are not your thing, perhaps a smaller lap dog breed or a cat would be a better match for you.

🔸 How much space do I have available for my pet?
🔹 Large and high-energy dogs will require a fenced backyard space to expend their built-up energy, so it is best to choose another breed if you stay at an apartment building.

🔸 Am I ok with pet hair collecting daily at my home? Am I ok with potential damage to my furniture?
🔹 As a pet parent, be prepared to deal with some occasional damage to the furniture, be it from scratching or biting. Also, choose a single-coated, low-shedding breed such as Yorkshire Terrier or a Sphynx cat if you can’t tolerate pet hair all over your furniture and clothing 😊

✅ BONUS TIP: If you have young children, consider waiting a bit longer before adding a pet to the family. Ideally, children should be at least six years old when adopting a pet.
