Glow.
I love our Daisy Dorset. She is the daughter of Rosie, my first sheep back in 2000 and the sweetest girl ever… as she grows older I see a bit of her Mom showing through making me appreciate her past so much more.

I adore fall. It marks so much… the ending of summer, the beginning of wood stove fires… it used to mark looking forward to school vacations with kiddos home. Now that they have all grown up fall also marks the changing of time but most important… good things to come.

I have been planning the new gardens for the house in my head for a while and it has been stressing me to no end. Walking into our wonderful little local antique shop something seemed to be calling me - I kept walking trying to figure out what it was and my eyes landed on this… St. Fiacre, a monk at Cill Fiachra (Kilferagh), Co Kilkenny in the 600’s. The patron saint of gardeners, herbalism and healing. St. Fiacre is celebrated on August 30th, the day I brought him home. I think it’s a good sign…

Our lives have entered a new chapter... I have such a love hate relationship with social media but so many have emailed, I thought I would give an update... Hubby and I will be relocating the farm next year to a 1700's homestead. We absolutely love this new old house inside and out. From each hand squared nail, the borning room, initials long ago carved into walls throughout the home and a full beehive oven with original crane along with warming fireplace in kitchen.
Foremost, the sanctuary will continue, but for now we pause to organize, plaster, paint, build fences at the new barn and most of all, rejoice and appreciate the 25 years of memories we have in our current home. We are still here... just a bit more quiet.
Should you need any help with a placement or rescue advice please text, call or PM anytime.

Our barn cats have returned looking a bit skinny and raggedy but safe - thank you to whoever may have found them and freed them from their hidding spot - although feral, after all these years, they are part of our family, definitely a long distance relationship ;) thank you all who emailed pics and updates, you are so appreciated.

Life has been busy around here with exciting changes happening (new post update soon) but wanted to jump on and introduce our little surprise born only last night and already swimming… still working on getting out of pond. Both moms are parenting together, after all, it takes a community to raise a duckling ;)

Shake, rattle and roll. Boogie Woogie is rather upset about the 100 degree heat today and letting it be known…

Sad Update: Neither bird survived the damage from the glue trap. Rest in peace little birds. You deserved better from humans.

This is the damage from a glue trap. I have two birds that were caught in a glue trap in this condition. I blame the store that sold this horrible item. A new homeowner went to a store because wasps were hanging around her porch. The salesperson told her this hanging glue strip would work great. The salesperson did not tell her that birds, bats, butterflies, etc were in danger from this glue trap. The women hung up the glue trap and left to do errands. Upon returning to her home, she was horrified to see two terrified birds stuck to the glue strip.
I'm not sure these Black-capped Chickadees will survive their ordeal, but I am giving them a chance. The birds were removed from the glue trap by the finder's friend. It is recommended to leave a stuck animal on a trap, cover any exposed glue with paper towels, and call for assistance rather than removing the animal from the glue yourself. Wildlife rehabilitators have training to do this with minimal harm.
Thanks to the finder for driving a good distance to bring these birds to Cummington Wildlife. I'll keep you updated on their progress.

Thank goodness…

Our Story

Second Chance Farm Sanctuary is a 501c3 nonprofit - 100% of your purchase goes towards the sanctuaries vet bills, hay, grain, emergency operations and adoption of our animals.

Started in 2000 as Carraig Farm & Apothecary, animal rescue has been at the center of everything we do. Some animals have joined the farm through partner rescues, others "appeared" while others were given up due to life circumstances, a death in family or abuse. We have loved blind sheep, rehabbed bunnies, warmed rescued baby goats at 2am on a -2 degree winter night, adopted arthritic old and deaf horses and built ramps for a goat with 3 working legs and half an udder... Each animal we have loved has its own wonderful stubbornness, perserverance and personality.

In 2005 pasture was added along with a second barn as our number of rescues grew. In 2008 a second coop was added along with emergency cage and 2 tractors. This year marks a wonderful milestone for us. We have restructured and renamed the farm with an eye on rescue only. A third barn has been added along with new pasture rotation fencing to house additional rescues.

Each animal that comes into our care has a back story... this back story is important in providing the best care for the farm animal and winning their trust. Through touch, gentle handling and hugs we are able to rehabilitate and eventually rehome giving each animal a second chance.
