Athena’s story began at a backyard butcher. Animals were living in horrific conditions before most were slaughtered. After working with local police and animal control to shut the operation down, Athena and many of the other surviving animals were brought to The Gentle Barn CA, giving them the chance at safety they’d never had before ❤️‍🩹

Athena’s condition reflected everything she had endured. She was thin, full of parasites, covered in old scars, and terrified of humans. At our Sun Chlorella USA Healing Center, she finally had the chance to rest, heal, and breathe again.

Once her body recovered and she joined the herd at our main location, everything began to shift for her. With time and patience, Athena let down her guard and discovered that people could be gentle. Today, she leans in for hugs, enjoys quiet moments meditating in the sun, and spends time with everyone in the herd—including newest rescue, Jethro.

These piglets both fell off trucks bound for bad places, and it saved their lives 🐷❤️
Mr. Noodles and Mr. Pickles were only weeks old when they arrived at The Gentle Barn, scared, tiny, and in need of care. From the moment they met, they understood each other. They curled up together, followed each other around, and became brothers in every way that matters.

From “Thanksgiving dinner” to a lifetime of safety 🦃❤️

Two years ago, Grace, Joy, Justice, Patience, and Forgiveness were being raised for the holiday table. Today, they’re spending their lives in sanctuary, surrounded by friends, comfort, and endless cuddles! These incredible birds are curious, playful, and living the lives they always deserved.

Their lives show just how wonderful turkeys can be when given the chance. And every time we choose compassion, we help create a world where turkeys can live with love and respect, just like these girls 💚

From orphan to healer 🐮❤️

Johnny has had such a tremendous life journey. He came to The Gentle Barn orphaned and only a few weeks old. He needed family, care, and space to heal, so we gave him all of that and more. Johnny spent his life at our healing center playing, relaxing, and enjoying lots of cookies. But as he grew into a senior and developed mobility issues, we knew he needed to come to our main location for extra care and comfort. Here, he witnessed birthday parties, tours, our public Sundays, and saw not only the love the other cows were receiving, but also the love and hugs our cows gave back to guests.

Johnny noticed the connection, and before long, he wanted to be part of it. Week by week, he grew more confident, curling up beside visitors, letting them rest against him, and sharing his gentle, calming energy. Today, Johnny is a Cow Hug Therapist, a healer for anyone who visits him. Guests lean into him, close their eyes, and feel the peace, trust, and love he radiates.

Johnny’s journey shows that even uncertain beginnings can lead to the most meaningful roles.
