We are saddened to share that our beloved and resilient horse Hiroka has passed. Despite her difficult past, Hiroka was a bright light, embodying joy, strength, and kindness at The Gentle Barn’s California location.
Rescued from a backyard butcher, Hiroka arrived at our sanctuary weak and wounded, yet she showed incredible trust in us from the moment she stepped off the trailer. The Gentle Barn team devoted themselves to heal her body and soul of the pain she endured from her previous horrific living conditions. Over the course of her 12 years with us, we provided her with the best possible care—gentle healing treatments, nourishing organic foods, and an abundance of love.
Hiroka had a special gift for connecting with people. She brought comfort and healing to so many, always eager for scratches and attention from guests, especially those in our equine therapy program, which she absolutely loved. Her spirit was unbreakable, and she inspired everyone around her with her unwavering gratitude for life.
In her advanced years, Hiroka faced significant health challenges, but she kept going because she loved her life at The Gentle Barn so much. While she had been her normal self in recent days, the other morning we found her lying down and unwilling to get back up. Though we did everything we could to ease her pain, it became clear that she was ready to be free from her ailing body. When the vet arrived, she confirmed there was nothing else that could have been done to support her other than to let her go. Hiroka was surrounded by those that she loved and those who loved her.
Hiroka will always hold a special place in our hearts. We are grateful for the love she shared and for the memories we created together. She has left a profound impact on all of us. Thank you for loving Hiroka alongside us. ❤️🩹

On this #WorldVeganDay, we celebrate Love's heartwarming journey. Born in our sanctuary after her mother Audrey and sister Truth were rescued from slaughter, Love has only experienced care and kindness from humans. Love has helped teach Audrey and Truth that they can also trust us, healing their past traumas and starting a new life.
Now, this beautiful family gets to spend their lives together, enjoying hugs and kisses, plenty of treats, and big grassy fields to run and nap in!
If only every animal could experience such peace! Join us in honoring the bonds that keep families together and in making compassionate choices for all beings. Together, let’s create a world where every animal can thrive in love and care! 💚🐄

Help our MO animals get to new Gentle Barn homes
We have some very big news to announce, while our California and Tennessee sanctuaries are thriving and continuing on, we must close our Missouri location, and the animals who live there will be joining our animal families in our CA and TN sanctuaries.
Every animal who comes into The Gentle Barn is met with a promise: we will love them, care for them, and provide for them for the rest of their lives. With numerous rescued animals under our care, we must work strategically to ensure they're getting everything they deserve, while also serving our local communities.
We love and care deeply about our MO staff, volunteers, visitors, and community, and we are very proud of all the work we've done there over the past 8 years. We have been working hard to stay open there, but through the pandemic, extreme weather, the economy, and diminished financial support, we have no choice but to move forward with this plan.
For 25 years, The Gentle Barn has rescued, healed, and rehabilitated animals with nowhere else to go, and we will continue. We will always be a home to animals who need it. But to ensure stability in our other locations, we must make this difficult decision.
This is a big undertaking, and we don’t take any of this lightly. Our rescued animals, under the close supervision of our founders, will be traveling to their new homes soon. When they arrive, we’ll be celebrating their new homecoming and making sure they feel as safe, secure, and loved as they have been since they were rescued.
These are really difficult times for everyone, including The Gentle Barn. It’s thanks to your support that we’re able to do this work, keep rescuing animals, and continue giving them the lives they all deserve.
We need your help now more than ever to see us through the transport of these amazing animals, who have given so much to the community, to reach their new homes in CA and TN. We need help to cover essential expenses like transport fees, building new spaces in their
