As 2025 comes to a close, we’re remembering the animals we said goodbye to this year at The Gentle Barn. Though they are no longer with us, their lives truly changed us, and we hold close everything they taught us, the love they gave, and the memories we were lucky to share.
They will always be part of our family, and forever in our hearts 💚

With love, we remember Bolt, Eddie, Danara, Sweetheart, Hope, Madonna, Sapphire, Story, Dylan, Thor, Shirley Temple, Fernando, Paloma, Violet, and Phoebe ❤️‍🩹

After her family was attacked by a mountain lion, Lyric fell into a ravine and shattered her leg. She needed an amputation surgery immediately, and with the help of our incredible community, we were able to get her the urgent care she needed. After weeks of recovery, Lyric fully healed and was able to join her new friends in the barnyard 🥹

Today, this beautiful girl runs, plays, and enjoys a full and happy life. At The Gentle Barn CA, she’s part of a big, loving family, receives specialized care to keep her comfortable and healthy, and is surrounded by love every single day ❤️

From a slaughterhouse to a life filled with love and family 🥹
The St Louis Six are the sweetest brothers with the kindest hearts and will always be on the nice list! 💚

Menorah was once going to be Christmas dinner. Everything changed when she unexpectedly gave birth, and the people raising her no longer saw her as a meal, but as a mother. That choice brought Menorah and her tiny babies home to The Gentle Barn.

Since then, she’s raised her kids, learned to trust, and lives a life filled with comfort, love, and joy. Menorah and her babies nap together, splash around in the pool, chatter constantly, wag their tails when they’re happy, and enjoy every belly rub. Through every season, they’ve stayed exactly where they want to be—together.

Six years later, Menorah and her children are still side by side, living the full lives they were always meant to have 💚🐷

Roo and his brothers escaped slaughter, arriving at The Gentle Barn scared and unsure of the world. In sanctuary, they found safety, patience, and the space to heal. Surrounded by family and care, Roo learned to trust and simply be a cow.

With time, and alongside his brothers, Roo chose connection. He began lying beside visitors, welcoming them to rest against his warm fur and feel his steady presence. Those moments grew into something truly special. Today, Roo is a Cow Hug Therapist, creating space for people to slow down, breathe, and feel safe.

Roo’s life is a reminder that when animals are given kindness and time, even the darkest beginnings can blossom into lives filled with purpose and love 🐮💚

Just like dogs, cows love a yummy treat.
While Chico could happily spend all day searching and snacking on crunchy acorns, sometimes we like to lend a hand and go acorn hunting for him! Think this might be his favorite treat? 🐮

Animals aren’t gifts, they’re lifelong commitments. While surprise pet videos can feel heartwarming, The Gentle Barn’s founder, Ellie Laks, shares why they can also lead to heartbreak. There are so many meaningful ways to celebrate our love for animals, like volunteering at shelters, donating to trusted organizations, sponsoring an animal, or letting the future adopter make the choice themselves. Animals deserve to be cherished as lifelong companions, not temporary gifts 💚

Moose is officially home! 💚
After days of intensive, compassionate medical care, he was eating and drinking on his own, and finally strong enough to return to his family at The Gentle Barn. He’s now settling back into his routine with so much relief and comfort.

We can’t thank you enough for the love and support you’ve sent his way. Because of your incredible generosity, Moose’s entire hospital bill was covered! This gift allowed us to focus entirely on his care and well-being 💗

Your kindness during his recovery was truly beyond words. Every message, every donation, and every gesture of kindness reminded us just how much this community rallies around our animals when they need us most. Welcome home, Moose!

Moose update from The Gentle Barn founder Ellie Laks: The vet says that he’s feeling a little better! He’s starting to eat some food, which is a great sign. He’s getting the best care, and we’re giving him lots of love and positive energy. We’re keeping a close eye on him, and as longs as he continues to feel better and doesn’t have any pain, we’re hoping to bring our sweet boy home soon.

THANK YOU to everyone supporting our working and keeping Moose in your thoughts, we know he feels it and it means the world to us ❤️

URGENT: Our rescued carriage horse Moose colicked and is fighting for his life in the hospital.

HOW TO HELP: As a nonprofit, we rely on your support in emergencies like this to help us do whatever is necessary for our animals. Please donate now to help cover the costly tests and treatments Moose needs so he can come back home to The Gentle Barn 💚

We'll post updates here as his care continues. Please keep Moose in your thoughts 🙏

Athena’s story began at a backyard butcher. Animals were living in horrific conditions before most were slaughtered. After working with local police and animal control to shut the operation down, Athena and many of the other surviving animals were brought to The Gentle Barn CA, giving them the chance at safety they’d never had before ❤️‍🩹

Athena’s condition reflected everything she had endured. She was thin, full of parasites, covered in old scars, and terrified of humans. At our Sun Chlorella USA Healing Center, she finally had the chance to rest, heal, and breathe again.

Once her body recovered and she joined the herd at our main location, everything began to shift for her. With time and patience, Athena let down her guard and discovered that people could be gentle. Today, she leans in for hugs, enjoys quiet moments meditating in the sun, and spends time with everyone in the herd—including newest rescue, Jethro.

You can give a gift that keeps on giving and sponsor Athena’s life in sanctuary at the link below 🐮💚
