Harvey has been suckin' the big IV at the vet for the past 5 days all because he decided a pack of gum laced with the artificial sweetener Xylitol was rather tasty. As much as we love to have fun, because we were so absolutely elated our boy was okay and coming home, the very devastating reality is there are those precious babies who never do get to go home 💔 According to the Animal Poison Control Center (APCC), 0.1 g/kg can cause hypoglycemia and 0.5 g/kg has been associated with acute hepatic necrosis and death 💀 Just "some" of the products containing Xylitol include five brands of peanut and other nut butters, four brands of chocolate, some “sugar-free” or “sugarless” ice creams and yogurts, chewable vitamins, “sugarless” gum, a long list of body, face and home care products, and many more. Ingestion of as little as 0.1 gram (g) of xylitol per kilogram (kg) of body weight (0.1 g/kg) can cause a rapid and dangerous drop in a dog’s blood sugar (a condition called “hypoglycemia”). Hypoglycemia can show as staggering, appearing disoriented, collapse, weakness, and seizures. Just slightly more than that, approx. 0.5 g/kg xylitol ingestion, can lead to debilitating, and sadly often deadly, destruction of a dog’s liver cells.
