ACF Animal Rescue The first and largest animal rescue service and sanctuary for abused and neglected animals in Karachi.

With Outreach and educational programs to help create a more compassionate society. ACF (AYESHA CHUNDRIGAR FOUNDATION)

The Ayesha Chundrigar Foundation, affectionately known as "ACF," was established in 2013 as a Non-Profit Organization and stands as a beacon of hope for animals in Pakistan. Before ACF came into existence, there was little awareness or support for animals in distress or, in fact,

animals in general, across Pakistan. ACF has emerged as a pioneering force in the realm of animal welfare in Pakistan. It tirelessly operates through various programs, community engagement efforts, and awareness campaigns, all with the aim of fostering compassion within society and advocating for the importance of robust animal rights laws. At ACF, we firmly believe in a holistic approach that considers the well-being of animals, humans, and the environment in unison. In our journey, we've come to realize that helping animals goes hand in hand with empowering the people who care for them and creating safe, healthy environments for all. ACF relies solely on donations and has, from its very inception, been dedicated to offering care and sanctuary to stray, abandoned, and abused animals—those often forgotten, battered, or neglected. We provide these services without charge, services that should ideally be provided by the state and its institutions. Over the past decade, ACF has served as a haven for over thirty five thousand (35,000) stray and abused animals through our active rescue service and helpline. Our unwavering commitment has not gone unnoticed, earning us numerous accolades, both nationally and internationally. Among these is the prestigious Pride of Pakistan award at the Pakistan Day Award Forces parade in 2021, as well as the Recognition of Exceptional Service award by Pakistan Rangers, Sindh. ACF's impact has extended beyond borders, reshaping Pakistan's image on the global stage. We proudly received the first-place award in the "Tell Her Story competition, a joint effort by the Institute for South Asia Studies at UC Berkeley and Facebook. ACF has initiated several impactful programs since its inception. Notable among them is our mass vaccination campaign for stray dogs, coupled with a TNVR (trap, neuter, vaccinate, and release) program aimed at humanely controlling the street dog population. ACF has also collaborated with the Sindh Wildlife Department and local authorities to rescue monkeys jackal pups and other animals from animal markets, providing them with a chance at rehabilitation. In addition, our commitment extends to equine welfare, as our dedicated team provides free medical care, food, water, to labor donkeys, while providing immersive experiences such as educational outreach and self-care sessions to donkey owners. We also distribute humane soft harnesses and sturdy carts to deserving donkey owners. This initiative not only reduces animal abuse but also empowers families by enhancing their livelihoods. We have introduced our own version of the Universal Basic Income model as an offshoot to our donkey camps where we provide financial support as well as the tools and skills required for guidance to aid in improving lives. All of our programs are designed to help animals in a country where there are no animal welfare rights and where animals are directly connected to humans such as donkey carts that are still one of the main modes of transport in the commercial sector of Pakistan. Without helping the human we are not able to reach the animal, hence we go into great depth in the way we work to bring about actual long-lasting change. At ACF, we continue to strive for a world where animals are treated with kindness and respect, and we invite you to join us in this noble endeavor. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of animals and the people who care for them.

✨ Have you ever seen a baby cow jumping in joy in Pakistan? 🐮💃🌧️

Probably the rarest sight in this country… a calf running freely in the rain with her mummy, enjoying her very first moments of pure happiness 💛

Meet Khushi (خوشی) — in Urdu, Khushi means JOY 🌼 Because that’s all she will ever know at our sanctuary.

Her mother, Arzu (آرزو), which means HOPE 🌿, was rescued from a terrible fate after severe suffering. Today, Arzu is living her best life, and baby Khushi is dancing in every rainfall yet to come 🌧️🐾

We are well aware that these animals are used for consuming meat. But that does not mean we should discount their beauty. This post is about appreciating their sentience, their joy, their affection. Because when you see Khushi, you see what a cow is really like — playful, loving, and full of life. Please don’t feel uncomfortable seeing them this way 💛

💛 Support ARZU & KHUSHI (JOY) as they grow together in safety and love.
🐄 PKR 5,000 / USD 17 helps cover their monthly care.

Part 2 of coming to terms with so much lately…

This new sanctuary has made me go quiet on social media because it unearthed things I didn’t even realize about myself. I built systems that almost punished me instead of protecting me. I let people pull me into reacting instead of standing in my own power.

But now I am building from a different place, one of strength, awareness, and healing. One born from years of rescuing animals in a country where every single day is unpredictable. I could make a movie 🎥 or write a book 📕 about the mistakes, the lessons, and the heartbreaks that led to this moment.

This sanctuary is not just bricks and mortar, it is my healing poured into theirs. It is laughter, tears, exhaustion, and resilience. It is my life’s work, built purely for the animals, because healing them is all I have ever wanted.

Please support the building of their forever home 🏡 every little bit helps bring us closer.

✨ It is only now that I have come to terms with the fact that my little animal rescue startup non-profit, the one I began 12 years ago, has grown into an organization.

This is just a small glimpse into my journey.
To truly tell the story would take a book… or maybe even a film 🎬
But for now, here’s a little background before I move on to part two.

Because when you’re building a startup, you don’t get the luxury of thinking clearly.
You’re working in survival mode.
In my case, that meant seeing battered, abused animals every single day in a city with no animal rights to protect your work… or to protect you.
There was nothing to protect me or the animals — and still, I kept going.

I didn’t realize how traumatized I was while doing it.
Now, for the first time, I’m taking a pause to reflect.

Part Two is coming soon 💭
Stay tuned.

🐾 Please support our journey to make animal rescue a norm in Pakistan — starting with the biggest city in the country, Karachi.

The last 48 hours have been absolute chaos 🆘

Karachi was hit with one of the worst monsoon rains in years. Both our shelters stayed safe thanks to the drainage systems we built — but once the skies cleared, disaster struck. Water released nearby backflowed into the old shelter, flooding us waist-deep.

Our exhausted team ran through the night in torchlight, stacking sandbags and blocks. By morning, we had brought in 300 sandbags, manpower, and even an excavator through flooded roads to dig emergency channels.

We responded immediately because we will never let our animals suffer. But if a small rescue team like ours can act so fast, why aren’t authorities investing in proper drainage when we all know monsoon season comes every year?

Lives don’t have to be lost. This is preventable.

Update on the donkey I saw in the crowd with the yellow cloth on his back and drooping ears ❤️‍🩹

After we bought him from his ex-owner (thank you to everyone who made that possible 🙏🏼), we brought him to the shelter and removed the filthy cloth, collars, and chains. The moment he was free he rolled on the ground in pure joy, something donkeys in Pakistan are rarely able to do because they are always tied to carts and forced to stand 💔

We named him Sol (which means life). After rolling around, he ate his food and had his very first bath, and you could see in his eyes he could not believe it was real. His eyes transformed from pain to peace, and when he arrived at our sanctuary he screamed out in happiness to the other donkeys, letting them know he is finally home.

🌿 Sol is now safe forever 🌿

If you’d like to support Sol you can help with:

Maybe I’m stupid, I don’t know.

When I went to rescue a mother dog, a crowd gathered, and in the middle stood a donkey under a sheet. His owner called me closer, but I stayed back. His ear drooped, tears filled his eyes, and even in the noise I could hear his silent screams. Donkeys never cry out loud in pain, they hold it in, and I could feel it 💔

I couldn’t get him out of my head. It’s never the animal’s fault. Yesterday, I sent my team to speak to his owner, and he agreed to sell him for Rs 12,000 (about USD 42). Today, the male members of my team went with the money, the man unlocked the padlock that had chained this poor boy for who knows how long, and now he’s on his way to us 🙏🏼

Please help cover the cost of buying him and support his care as he arrives at our sanctuary — his forever home where he will never be chained again 🏡❤️‍🩹

P.S. Pakistan still uses donkeys for the commercial sector, and many owners are among the poorest daily wage earners. I have met kind ones who never hurt their animals, because poverty doesn’t cause cruelty — cruelty is a choice. I paid the man because I will never take away someone’s livelihood, but I will not be going back there.

Mama Strong’s First Soft Blanket Moment ✨

Mama Strong was the mother dog we had posted about, the one desperately trying to protect her puppies under a motorbike. She was terrified, believing her only chance at survival was to stay hidden beneath it. She thought her whole life would be about crouching in fear, shielding her puppies from a world she didn’t understand.

But now, for the first time ever… 🩷
• She has felt a soft hand
• She has rested on a soft blanket
• Her heart has stopped pounding in fear
• She knows her puppies are safe

It is heartbreaking, because a dog has the mind of a toddler and cannot make sense of a city like Karachi, a concrete and ruthless jungle where the most vulnerable are always exploited.

Mama Strong is slowly coming out of her trauma with us. She is safe in our care now, and we would be so grateful if you could help her on her journey. She and her little family will now live with us permanently.

This is a part of animal rescue I have never shared before.

Over time I have realized three difficult truths:
1. The lack of protection for women on the streets here is terrifying.
2. Animals are sometimes used as bait to lure me into dangerous situations.
3. Many of the “kids” I meet during my rescue work are not regular kids, they have seen hard lives, and deal with it like adults, and there is a fine line between empathy and being a pushover.

In this post you will see how complex it is to be a woman leading animal rescue in Pakistan 🇵🇰 It is something I face on almost every rescue, but I usually keep the focus on the animals, not on what happens to me.

This time, when we went to save the mother dog and her puppies (last post), I was baited by being told there were other injured animals nearby. Following that lead brought us into a dead end. Suddenly, we were surrounded by a mob of over 50 people. Some were boys, 13 or 14 years old, others were men. In that moment, I felt trapped.

When you are in a situation like that, you cannot simply push someone away or shout. One wrong move can escalate things dangerously fast, and the crowd can turn on you in seconds. Even my 4 male team members hesitated, unsure how to react without making things worse.

All the while, there are still animals that need me. Managing the crowd, keeping calm, and trying to rescue the animals from these men, took everything I had. I have not shared the footage of the way they behaved with me, to avoid triggering anyone, but it took every ounce of focus and self-control to get us out safely.

I have always wanted the spotlight to stay on the animals ❤️‍🩹 but the reality is that being part of the solution also means dealing with attitudes and situations that can make the rescue itself a risk. This is the side you rarely see, yet it is part of every single day we work on the streets.

Update on the mummy dog under the motorbike 🥹🙏🏼♥️

When I first saw her curled up on a motorbike, I thought she was gone… lifeless, frozen in fear, one of her surviving puppies desperately feeding. She was too weak to reach the other surviving ones after three were brutally killed the night before and one had died that morning 💔

I have seen so many of the dogs I’ve neutered and vaccinated killed. It is disheartening to another level… but forget about me. Imagine what happens to them. For female dogs, it is the worst kind of unfair — they become mothers again and again, and Pakistanis choose not to understand that the humane method of dog population control is the only way for humans to feel safe and for dogs to live without suffering.

✨ But today, Mama Strong is safe at our shelter and her eyes tell a new story — peace, safety, and relief.

🐶 Under observation and care
💊 Receiving multivitamins for strength
🍲 Eating nutritious meals (moving to 3x daily)
🍼 Producing milk to feed her puppy
💩 Urine and stool clear

Please help us keep her safe and strong — PKR 2,500 or USD 11 covers her daily care.

This is a deep one 💔

This mother dog only knows one “home,” a spot where a little boy shakes a motorbike to scare her out 😣 That’s the only way he thinks she will move.

From here, what happens turns into an entire saga, and it’s exactly how every rescue in Karachi has to be managed so delicately.

When I go out for rescue, I’m not just saving an animal, I’m trying to bring about a cultural shift 🌍 Most people here don’t see animals the way I do. For so many, animals are thought of as non-feeling, disposable.

This mother’s puppies have already been through hell, some stomped to death the night before as you can see in the video 💔 I had to stand there, calmly and patiently explaining to people how animals truly are, while inside I was burning with grief and rage.

Our lack of education and broken systems are not the animals’ fault, yet they are the ones who always pay the price, even though they are the most innocent.

Rescue in Karachi is never “just” picking up a suffering animal from the road. It’s about patiently and persistently trying to change an entire culture through every single rescue.

The mother and her puppies are safe with us now 🙏🏼 Please support them ❤️ This is Part 1 of many posts where I will share more about the layered complexity of human–animal relationships here, and what I face every day as a woman working in a culture where both women and animals live with their lives in constant danger ⚠️

How one little puppy motivated me to open a foster care camp 🐶🩷

⚠️ Trigger warning: ear and tail cruelty
But this story has a beautiful, heartwarming ending 🌈

Meet Tatum.
He was rescued in December, a tiny puppy with his ears and tail cruelly cut off. Someone thought he was a fancy breed and tried to make him look like one. When they realized he was just a regular desi dog, they threw him away like he didn’t matter.

His eyes said it all — shocked, frozen, confused. His little body couldn’t understand why someone would hurt him so badly.

I receive countless puppies like Tatum every day. And while our shelter already cares for over 2,000 animals, some are just too tiny. They need calm, focused, one-on-one care to heal.

So I turned my own office into a foster care space.
One chair for me, a couple for visitors — and the rest belongs to animals like Tatum. Puppies, kittens, senior dogs, cats with special needs. Thirteen of them are here right now, slowly coming back to life.

✨ Here is Tatum, six months later — joyful, strong, and finally home 🐾

This is TATUM’S FOSTER CARE, and it runs separately from the main shelter. If you’d like to support it, every little bit helps.

💵 PKR 2,700 or $19 can go a long way in caring for one animal.

Our Story

ACF (AYESHA CHUNDRIGAR FOUNDATION)

ACF (AYESHA CHUNDRIGAR FOUNDATION) is a non-profit organization based in Karachi, Pakistan, registered in 2013 under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 of Pakistan.

ACF was created with a vision to assist marginalised or forgotten communities, animals and humans alike, to be rescued and rehabilitated, to improve their quality of life, for everyone to to have a fair chance to live their lives with dignity and respect.

ACF is popularly known as ACF Animal Rescue; the first initiative ACF started was the first-of-its-kind animal shelter in Pakistan, based in Karachi for injured and unwell stray animals such as dogs, cats and kites and working animals such as donkeys, horses and camels.
