Some would consider Angelo to be special needs. His foster says he is special, very special.
PUP received a message from a woman in a very remote area who had come home from work and found what she thought was a dead puppy in her yard. She checked, and he was very much alive, but something was clearly wrong. Thankfully, a PUP volunteer picked him up and brought him home.
When little Angelo first arrived at his foster home, he was frustrated and anxious as he struggled to eat from a bowl and constantly spilled his water. As he settled into his foster home and routine, his abilities became more clear. He could make out large objects, but his food bowl was a mystery. His back legs are unsteady, while his front legs goose step. Upon his first vet visit, he was diagnosed with both retinas being detached, meaning little Angelo is mostly blind but can make out larger shapes. Hence his difficulty with food and water bowls. Whatever is going on with his gait appears to be improving and does not appear to be progressive. What happened to this little boy to put him in this condition will remain a mystery, and how he ended up in a Good Samaritan’s yard is an even greater mystery.
In his foster home, he spends time with two puppies and two adult dogs. He hasn’t figured out how to play with them yet, but he is giving it a try. He chews on everything; it is his way of exploring the world. When it is something inappropriate, he is corrected; otherwise, he loves to explore. Angelo is using newspapers to p*e on inside the house and also knows to p**p and p*e outside. He has not mastered stairs yet, so his foster carries him out. Therefore, a one-level home and a ramp for stairs outside are highly recommended for this pup. Since being in a home where he feels secure, his curious, silly, and playful personality has truly blossomed. He loves the freedom of the yard and has started to walk on a leash. Although he is a slower walker due to his lack of sight and pace, he makes the walk fun as you slow down to watch him enjoy the outdoors.
We do not anticipate unusual vet expenses for Angelo, but he will certainly need a very special human to teach him things and protect him from unsafe areas that sighted dogs would know to avoid. Therefore, he would be a perfect fit for someone who has worked with special needs pets before. Angelo is ready for his forever home; he just needs to find the right person or family. Angelo looks like a Border Collie cross, but that is just a best guess. DNA testing from dogs from the area often shows 15-25 different breeds. Most have some Shepherd, Husky, herding dog like Aussie, and even the biggest dogs often have some Chihuahua in the mix. We believe Angelo will be a mid-size pup when he is full-grown, but that is an approximation, since we have no idea who mom or dad are, and are guessing his age is between 9-10 weeks. Please help us find this good boy an amazing forever home! He truly is a sweetheart and loves everyone he meets!
