These last few weeks have been immensely difficult for most people. We have felt shocked and betrayed, confused and helpless. It is difficult to not hypernormalize what is happening and become desensitized. There is the finest spider silk of a line between overconsumption of news and complete dissociation. It is important to stay informed, but it is equally important to take care of your mental health. Watch the news, but take a break, put your phone away, and play with your pet. Or just look at your pet and think, “You know nothing about what’s going on in the world and I want to feel what that’s like, too.” Take a deep breath and look at your pet. What do they want to do? Do they want to snuggle? Play? Take a nap? Do that. And then you can get back to staying informed.

Not all of us are able to move fast and break things nor is that necessarily the right way to make a difference. The biggest and most long-lasting changes take time. Don’t give up. Take things slow and don’t get overwhelmed by the speed of everything else.

Hi, Ohana. Rebecca here. There has not been very much information regarding H5N1 in KY. I have been keeping a close eye on this virus since this past summer. What I know is that there has been at least one confirmed case of Snow Geese being infected with H5N1 in KY. The virus has been detected in every state. Both dogs and cats have been infected with the virus and infected cats have a higher mortality rate than dogs. The most common risk factor involves raw food diets. Raw food includes freeze dried treats and meal toppers. If you feed your pet freeze dried animal products, please check the date and location of the packaging of the product and hold off from buying more until more information is available.

The H5N1 avian influenza, commonly known as H5N1 or bird flu, typically infects poultry and wild birds but has also recently infected dairy cattle and domestic cats.

The current public health risk is low, but this is an evolving situation as the virus continues to mutate, and protecting our cats may help mitigate public health concerns.

Snow? Yes. Ice? No, thank you. As much as we have all been having fun in the snow, we’re ready for this ice to melt. Icy sidewalks mean that we’ve been having to walk on the streets which isn’t nearly as fun (or safe!). We’re excited to be back on the sidewalks, taking our sweet time with sniffaris or speedwalking without having to look out for vehicles!
