I am proud to be a Code of Ethics Breeder working to preserve the health and well-being of the Coton de Tulear by doing complete health testing on my breedable adult Coton Family. July 7th, 2020 marked my 19th year as a breeder of the Rare Breed Coton de Tulear so I have lots of information to share, LOL! Please email me at [email protected] or from my website at CedarwoodCotons.com and as

soon as I am able to, I will send you my Information Letter for you to review before beginning the Application Process. It will provide you with important information about my particular approach to raising Cotons, especially regarding Holistic/ Alternative and Integrative care, the RAW diet that I follow, and other important information that will help you decide if I am the right breeder for you or not. I normally welcome phone calls but I currently have so many calls for puppies that I am unable to return all the phone calls I receive so please email me to request my Information Letter first! Once you have read through my Information Letter, if you would like updates, email me again with “Puppy Update Requested” in the subject line!

**If you wish to schedule a phone interview after reading through everything in my Information Letter, please contact me again by email with “Interview Request” in the subject line. Thank you for your patience and understanding! HOWEVER: If we already have an established relationship and are already working together, please do call me at 802-533-2458 and I will return your call as soon as possible! I do love to chat about Cotons but always have far more phone calls and emails than I can possibly respond to promptly and given the current pandemic, there has been an even greater increase in the number of requests I receive so PLEASE be patient! Please note that my response time IS taking far longer than usual, so please be persistent and patient! Health Testing: This involves extensive testing of all my breedable Cotons including OFA Eye Exam, OFA Cardio, OFA Patellas, Complete Blood Panels (CBC), and are Normal/Clear (non-carriers) or clear by parentage for all known inheritable diseases including CMR2, von Willebrand's Disease, Neonatal Cerebellar Ataxia, Degenerative Myelopathy, HU and PH. Note: These diseases are autosomal recessive and are rare in the breed. It takes a carrier gene from each parent to produce an affected puppy. They have also been tested and cleared for all breed specific tests done by Embark Testing from Cornell University Research Labs. When appropriate I also do Penn Hip and OFA Preliminary Hip testing. In my opinion, if all Coton breeders would test adults before breeding, and would breed for the inherent genetic diversity and not eliminate the native colors from our gene pool, we could eventually eliminate these diseases! I strongly believe that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!”

Please check the Breeder List at the Malagasy Coton de Tulear Preservation Club and the American Coton Club to check for other Code of Ethics Breeders as well! Thanks so much! Your patience is greatly appreciated! Aisha Cameron of Cedarwood Cotons

The UC-Davis Study

Are mixed breed dogs healthier than purebreds? There's a lot of controversy over this, but you may be surprised by what one big study shows ...

From the latest Email from dogs Dogs Naturally Magazine:

"NATURAL HEALTH
THE CAUSE OF PREMATURE AGING AND DISEASE
I have an interesting study for you today ...

Over 20 years ago, researchers from Belgium gathered data from over 500 dogs and followed them for 5 years.

When they compared dogs eating fresh foods to dogs eating processed foods, they found that the dogs eating fresh foods statistically lived 32 months longer.

Said another way, processed foods shaved nearly 3 years of the study dogs' lives.

There are a lot of reasons for premature aging, but new research shows that telomere shortening could be one link between processed foods and a shortened lifespan.

TELOMERES AND LONGEVITY
At the end of each chromosome is a stretch of DNA called a telomere.

Think of telomeres as the hard ends of shoelaces ... telomeres protect the ends of your dog’s chromosomes and stop them from unraveling.

As your dog ages, her telomeres shorten … the older the dog, the shorter her telomeres. This is because every time a cell divides, the telomere gets shorter and shorter. And many cells are constantly dividing, such as skin and liver cells.

Once the telomeres are gone, its DNA unravels and the cell will do one of three things:

Self destruct (apoptosis)
Go rogue (become cancerous)
Retire (become senescent)
The body is constantly living with cancer and is well equipped to deal with it. So if the immune system is functioning well, it can pick up and destroy any cancerous cells.

It's the senescent cells that do the most harm ...

One bad apple can ruin the whole cart … that’s exactly how senescent cells cause premature aging and disease.

They hang around the body and release toxic chemicals. These chemicals start to stick to surrounding healthy cells, causing them to also become senescent or cancerous.

So if you want your dog to live and long life, you need to protect his telomeres.

HOW PROCESSED FOOD SHORTENS TELOMERES
Researchers in Spain looked at telomere length and diet in human participants. They found that the more processed foods they ate, the greater the risk of shortened telomeres.

Participants that ate 3 or more servings of processed foods daily were 82% more likely to have shortened telomeres.

WHAT IS A PROCESSED FOOD?
Most pet foods (even many raw foods) contain processed ingredients. This means they're exposed to high heat, processing or they're made in a lab.

What are the ingredients most likely to be processed?

Meals (like chicken meal or corn meal)
Flavors (even natural flavors)
Colorings
Vitamins Minerals
You probably already know to stay away from meals and flavors. But many kibbles and freeze-dried foods contain vitamins and minerals.

Most vitamins are made with petroleum products and are highly processed ... and minerals are also processed. So you'll want to avoid fresh foods with added vitamins and minerals.

Processed foods are also lacking in antioxidants. A steady stream of antioxidants is critical to reduce oxidative damage and telomere shortening. This is one more reason why fresh is best when it comes to food!

HOW TO PREVENT TELEMORE SHORTENING
There are food and lifestyle changes you can make that will help keep your dog's telomeres long and inflammation down.

Here's a list of simple foods that can you can add today, even if your dog eats kibble:

Add Omega-3 Fats: Studies show that the higher the amount of omega-3 fats in the diet, the longer the telomeres.
Sulforaphane: Broccoli and especially broccoli sprouts are rich in a polyphenol called sulforaphane. This is a powerful antioxidant and liver detoxifier ... but make sure it's not heated as heat destroys the enzyme that converts sulforaphane in the body.
Fasting: Fasting reduces oxidative stress, which is a major cause of telomere shortening. Try fasting your dog once or twice a week or feeding him just once a day.
Probiotics/Prebiotics: A healthy gut contains plenty of bacteria that reduce inflammation. And as dogs age, their microbiomes become less diverse and this can cause inflammation and telomere shortening."

No! I do not use their kibble nor do I use their meal mixers nor is there puppy food appropriate for anything except large breed dogs. I really do use and love their freeze dried raw and they're frozen raw products. But the information on how they make sure their products are safe is very interesting so that's why I'm posting this article.

"This company was fined for polluting the environment, but because state and federal regulatory agencies allow it – it is acceptable for the source of the environmental pollution (raw pet food ingredients) to be dumped on the ground, exposed to weather/pests/contaminants, decompose…and then be processed into pet foods.

What is not allowed to be disposed of in the environment IS allowed to be disposed of into pet food – with no warning or disclosure to pet food consumers."

Pollution to one agency, pet food ingredients to another.

Cedarwood Cotons:

Thanks so much for getting in touch. I am proud to be a Code of Ethics Breeder, Mentor, and Board Member of the American Coton Club, Home of the Rare Breed Coton de Tulear. I’ve been working to preserve and maintain the health and well-being and genetic diversity of the Rare Breed Coton de Tulear since July 7th, 2001.

Health Testing: I believe in the value of prevention and Health Test the parents of my puppies thoroughly! This involves extensive health testing of each potentially breedable Coton including testing for OFA Eye Exams, OFA cardiological testing, CBC (complete blood panel), orthopedic testing including PennHip, OFA Hip, Elbows & Patellas.

All of my Cotons are either clear by inheritance (parentage) or are also DNA tested for and are Normal/Clear (non-carriers) for CMR2, von Willebrand's Disorder, Neonatal Cerebellar Ataxia, Degenerative Myelopathy, and PH. My Males are also tested through the Embark DNA sequencing done at the research labs of Cornell University.

Note: These DNA-linked diseases are autosomal recessive and are rare in the breed. It takes a carrier gene from each parent to produce an affected puppy.
