In October 2021 my precious boxer, Taro, died. He was known to everyone as the friendliest, sweetest boy, always happy to meet new people. He would look you in the eye and seemed to communicate like a person. He was 10 years old. I grieved so hard when we lost Taro. He was my soul dog. His brother, Mochi, was still with us. After Taro’s death Mochi became so depressed he was diagnosed with pancreatitis. We wanted to bring home a friend for Mochi. I wanted a girl puppy but all the puppies in my friend’s littler had been spoken for. A couple days after Thanksgiving, my friend called to tell me we could get a little flashy brindle girl from her. I cried with joy. This was a huge surprise and we were so excited. We traveled to Oklahoma a couple days later to pick her up. Kameko was the most beautiful little girl. She was our first female boxer. Mochi immediately became attached to her and he was so much happier. We doted on Kami and she grew up to be a feisty crazy high jumping boxer. We had to install coyote rollers on the fence because she could climb up the 6 foot tall fence and throw herself over it. When she wanted to go outside she would stand at the door and jump high into the air just because she could. If anyone came to the door she’d take a running leap and pounce on the glass door, scaring people to death. She was a character. She had a spot in the house where she loved to sit, the end of the couch. She’d sit up tall like a human and keep watch from her post. All day long when I’d walk by her I couldn’t resist stopping to give her a hug and a kiss on the head. I will never be able to look at my couch without seeing her sweet face there. It was her watch post. We welcomed Jiro home in 2022. For awhile we had puppy Kami, puppy Jiro and old Mochi. He adored the puppies Sadly he died in 2022. Jiro died in 2024, so so young from a freak immune system disorder.
Kami lived for the times in the day when Steve would let her play with Jiro, and later, Toshi in the “fun yard”, not the dog yard. She loved to help Steve feed the deer every night. She could out run Jiro and later, Toshi. She’d grab them by the collar and pull them around.
I used to sit and hold Kami and tell her the story of the day when I found out we were going to bring her home. I would tell her how happy I was just like I was telling a story to one or my children when they were young. Mochi was also like a new dog when she came home. Kami brought so much joy into our lives in the 3 years plus a couple months we had her. She was our precious girly girl, Kam Kam, Kam, Kamiko, Kamichan, Kameko named by Alexandra, which means tortoise in Japanese. Turtles symbolize longevity, but that was not the case for our Kameko. We are blessed by the short time we had with her. I’m hate thinking about walking into my house when I return home and not seeing her run to me wiggling her whole body like boxers do. Kami, what will we do without you? 💔

Kameko died today. GI Lymphoma diagnosed on January 2, 2025. She was our sweet girl, the princess, the most athletic boxer we’ve ever seen. We are devastated. Steve is handling everything by himself because I’m away on a trip. I was able to be with them on video during the end. This is hard.

Kami is doing ok. First type of Chemo didn’t work so she’s starting the CHOP protocol Friday. She’s acting pretty normal but we can tell she’s lost weight. Our new oncologist is really good so we are feeling hopeful.

Good morning from Kami and Toshi. Kami had her second chemotherapy and is doing fine. She is maintaining her weight and seems happy and active like her usual self. We keep praying for complete remission.

This makes me so happy. Kami had the energy and spirit to run with Toshi. She woke up hungry and ate baked potatoes and chicken and later some of my whole wheat sourdough bread with almond butter. She loves my bread!

Kami had her first chemotherapy session yesterday. She was diagnosed with high grade large cell lymphoma. Grade Vb. Prognosis with chemo is average 5 months if she responds. So, we are devastated. Keep Kami in your prayers. Brother Toshi seems to know she’s sick and stays by her side.

Crazy Toshi figured out how to open the back door which has a regular door knob and then the house door to let himself in. I kept finding the two doors open the last week or so and couldn’t figure out that he was letting himself in. My husband accused me of leaving the doors open and I swore I didn’t. This morning I made sure I shut the door tightly and I heard him come in. So I let him out again, shut the door and made sure it was closed completely and waited for him. #toshiboxer #escape

I love them so much. Toshi will be one year old in 3 weeks. He and Kameko are best friends.
