Amyable Animal Training I am an animal trainer in the Utah Valley area. I believe that training should be fun-- for you and your dog!

I love helping young dogs through awkward teenage stages, and I love unlocking potential in high energy breeds and anxious pets.

They are cuddling! 😱

Now, what's funny about these two is that they are both utterly obsessed with me. Maya (my dog) follows me around the house and always likes to lay down where she can see me.

Sylphrena (the cat) does her own thing most of the time, but if she can't find me, she wanders the house, meowing loudly. When I went on vacation this summer, she was content for about two days, and then she meowed at the door so constantly (ignoring my husband's attempts to feed her or play with her) that I pondered coming home early. We are working on it.

But anyhow... Though they aren't extremely fond of each other, they both really like to nap with me when I take a nap, but they usually lie on either side of me, preferring not to disturb the other.

But today I woke up from my nap, and discovered this. Maya kept trying to sniff Syl, who eventually put her ears back and moved about two feet away, but still. It warmed my heart and I thought I should share.

I love this quote by Jane Goodall.

Respect for animals doesn't mean that you let them do whatever they want, but it means that you acknowledge that they have their own wants and their own needs. It acknowledges that those might not always align with what we want.

It means we must have compassion for our faithful furry friends and learn what those needs and wants are. A great way to help you gain further insight into this is by learning your pets' body language signals.

Lucky for you, you don't have to live among wild chimpanzees to learn your pets' body language. There is a lot of research already out there!

If you are trying to make your pet's life better, remember that every animal is an individual. Sometimes, your idea of fun, isn't theirs. So, as you try to enrich their life, you can look up enrichment ideas and try them, but keep these things in mind as you go.

❤️ Give some time to adjust to new things

New puppies take time to get used to collars.
New cats take time to get used to harnesses.
It's okay if the first few times those things go on, they don't super love it, but if it doesn't seem like things are getting easier...

❤️ Pair new things with things you already know they love and enjoy.

So, don't go straight from harness to leashing your new pet outside. That's two things that they aren't super confident about! Put the harness on inside, then try playing with them, or feeding them their favorite food or treats with it on. Do that for several days BEFORE trying it with the leash. Then try it with the leash and the favorite thing inside first!

❤️ Reach out to a trainer (hi!) Or some kind of knowledge base/support group!

If your animal isn't improving their feelings about the leash (or the puzzle toy or the automated food dispenser or whatever) after a while, ASK FOR HELP. YouTube videos and Instagram reels can be very informative, but sometimes you need help, and that's okay

❤️ Call it quits if your animal doesn't like the activity.

Just because fetch is good exercise for many dogs, doesn't mean your dog will like it. ( It's repetitive and intense, and many vets discourage it, as it can lead to joint issues and obsessive behavior anyhow, so it's fine) Just because you wanted an adventure kitten, doesn't mean your kitten wants to be one.

❤️ Learn about your animal's body language.

There is definitely something out there he will enjoy, and if you can read his body language, you're more likely to know when you find it! (But remember that new things can be scary--- and use recommended desensitization and counterconditioning techniques to help!)

Check out Maya's progress with the buttons! She will correctly use them for pets and play, but the outside button she doesn't seem to WANT to use, probably because she usually just goes outside on a schedule.

It's gotten quite a few likes and views, so it must be interesting! Haha

This week, I am quoting some good friends! Allie and Emily are my bosses at , but they really feel more like friends and mentors.

We have this idea that is something "extra" to spoil our a bit, but in all reality, enrichment is essential for a well-rounded, mentally and physically healthy pet.

The quote reads: "Enrichment is learning about what our [pets'] needs are and then structuring an environment that allows them, as much as possible, to meet those needs." The quote is from Allie and Emily's book,

Overall, one of the most challenging things for families with new dogs is managing their ENERGY, especially with younger dogs. along with countless other experts agree that you need to find a balance between physical and mental exercise. The body needs to move, but the brains of these marvelous domesticated creatures have been tailored for millennia to work. To work with and for their human counterparts.

So, what have you done to help your dog use its brain today?

Training Tip Tuesday!

01/09/2021

Then come join our free webinar. We are here to share 5 tips that will help any family living with a dog that has some problematic behaviors, no matter the problem!

01/09/2021

Behavior is more complex than a single yes-no dichotomy. So often, we may say "it's not working" because we are looking for hard lines to draw in the sand. Sometimes, success is much murkier. It's the start of your dog relaxing, or the start of your dog paying attention to you, or the start of your dog sniffing for their kibble.

Success is so much more complex than a yes-no scenario.

Do you know what success looks like for your dog?

I was feeling pretty exhausted, between working at Petco, studying, and behavior consulting with Pet Harmony, and I decided to do something artsy. Behold, my logo! I am pretty happy with it right now, but I'm still messing with it.

What do you think?

We played "find it" In the park this morning. With no kids there, my daughter was very disappointed, so she hid treats around the playground, and Maya found them! This is the aftermath. Two happy, but content kiddos.

Enrichment is such a vital part of an animal's life. Not only does it make them happier, but it helps them listen to you! In this photo, Maya and the girlie are actually watching another dog across the street. Maya would bark at this dog normally, but with all her energy used up in finding the treats, she was content to watch. Though, she did whine a little.
