It's almost that time! I wanted to give everyone a list of puppy basics since im sure your all going shopping soon!
1. Puppys are eating Purina Pro Plan Salmon and Rice. You can Google search this to find retailers near you. Chewy also carries it and has auto shipping.
2. Crate.. Vari-Kennels are safer for puppies as they dont have space for a pup to get his jaw or toes stuck in between the wire. They also provide a "den" type feeling which helps the pup feel safer in its new environment. When the pup is older and has learned the way of the crate then you can purchase a wire crate if wanted.
3. Chew toys..lots and lots of chew toys! Puppys are going to be teething from 10 weeks-16 weeks. I prefer KONG or Nylabone brand chew toys as they dont splinter and are safe for large breed chewers.
4. Small, lightweight collar. You can also purchase a lightweight, nylon or leather leash but puppies are easily taught to stay with you and need time to adapt to a leash..NO FLEXI LEASHES! They are dangerous and useless when trying to train!
5. And last but certainly not least, FIND A TRAINER!! I can not stress this enough! German Shepherds need socialization and interaction. You can not simply train a dog at home and expect it to be well rounded and social. Your puppy needs to have experience in the real world and around other dogs and people or it will not grow mentally. German Shepherds need mental stimulation constantly, this is not done at home, it is done out in a real world environment. I have NEVER met a dog who was trained at home that listened to commands and was well rounded in a social environment. Call around to different trainers and ask to sit in on a class..ask about their training experience or ask your friends or family for a referral. I can also possibly give you a list of trainers in your area based on having placed puppies all over New England who have attended training. Please do not fool yourself thinking that this can be skipped. You will have a 80 # problem in 6-8 months if you do.
