Beaks & Feathers Aviaries Some of the Parrots we have, Amazons, Caiques, (Conures:- Sun, Pied Sun, Jenday, Peach fronts

We created this Page Beaks & Feathers Aviaries to help you, the bird owner, to give your bird/pet the best care and life possible, from the hands-on experience and the extensive research we have done into mainly Conures & Caiques! While I do breed birds, the primary function of the page and what we do on Facebook is to educate fellow bird caregivers here and in the groups we have. Bird behaviour t

heir instinctive needs is completely foreign to most people, and it can lead to a lot of miscommunications & understanding. Most people grow up with a kitten or a puppy or both and have at least a general idea of how to care for them properly. Dogs and cats have been domesticated for hundreds of years; it is easier for us to “read” them and while parrots have been domesticated to some extent, their instinct is to act first think later. As prey animals, parrots react very differently to situations than dogs and cats. We strongly believe that education is key to providing parrots with safe and happy and loving homes that readily cater for more than just their basic needs. We also believe that educating the new & existing bird owners of their needs and understanding them makes for a much happier parrot & owners bond, and in turn, there will be way fewer parrots up for rehoming or adoption hopefully. While Avian Veterinarians are an especially important part of our bird’s health, some seem to put all birds under the same big umbrella as that is what they have been taught, but different birds have different needs like Conures & Caiques are instinctively cavity sleepers and not perch sleepers like a lot of others are as well as their diets are all different as well This site Beaks & Feathers Aviaries has a sister Page Beaks & Feathers Aviaries Exotic Parrots we will be updating and transferring files our website https://www.beaksandfeathersaviaries.com/ also into our bird pages and is largely an educational site with the files that we use quite often in our groups

Some of the Parrots we have, Alexandrines, Amazons, Caiques, (Conures:- Sun, Pied Sun, Jendaya, Peach Fronted, Golden Capped, Crimson Bellied, Black-Capped, Pearly, Rose Crowned and most of the Green Cheek Conures also in blue and Jade

Our Mealworm Farm for our Birds and more :)
We started our farm almost a year ago with just 2 kg of mealworms at the end of February last year, so it was not quite a year ago. We had a bit of a teething problem when we started starting but quickly sorted that and discovered having a heat source through the colder months was well and truly beneficial to their production amounts,
We have 4 large tubs of beetles that we take the beetles out every 2 weeks and have them staggered, so we swap out 2 tubs every week to have a steady supply of Mealworms. At the moment, they are producing 5-6 kg of medium worms a week :)

The new set of drawers is all done now :) A 20m heat cord and a habitat pulse proportional thermostat (Pulse proportional thermostats are advanced thermostats that use pulses of power to control the connected equipment. These thermostats modulate the power supply by using timed pulses of energy to achieve the desired temperature control.) so it maintains a constant pre-set temperature without fluctuation and is more power-efficient. We use these on all of our mealworm drawers. There are also 2 lots of 10 smaller drawers we use that are not shown here that we use also. :)

Some of our new babies in 2025, 2 Baby Pied Sun Conures

25/01/2025

Some of our green cheek conures enjoy some live mealworms. Three days ago, we put a bowl of live mealworms in with them, and there was not any interest in food that moved, lol. Then, two days ago, we offered them singerly by hand and still and still food that moved was not for them, it seemed, lol,
So we offered them some fresh dead ones that were a hit, and then some live ones again that they took to from the hand.
Then, today, we offered them a bowl of live ones. There was no stopping them.
Persistence is key to any new thing, whether it be food or a new toy or box, and offer it in different ways and be creative

Half an hour before I took this video, they had not seen a mealworm before, or I should say only once before. I was in a bit of a rush and left them with a bowl of them for an hour or so, but they were not interested in moving food, apparently. But today, I took a few fresh dead ones in, and they were a little standoffish still. However, within 30 minutes, this is what they were like, and they could not get enough of them, even the live ones :)

Our sun conures absolutely adore bath time! It’s a delightful experience to sit back and enjoy watching them play, bringing happiness to our day.

Some of the babies we are hand-raising are having some socialising time. And there is one little green cheek that seems to want to identify as a Sun Conure, lol
It appears that after the big storms we had, it's a cool, rainy day today after our close to 40° C yesterday. It's a good day to snuggle and sleep :)
