Beaks & Feathers Aviaries Some of the Parrots we have, Amazons, Caiques, (Conures:- Sun, Pied Sun, Jenday, Peach fronts
(88)

We created this Page Beaks & Feathers Aviaries to help you, the bird owner, to give your bird/pet the best care and life possible, from the hands-on experience and the extensive research we have done into mainly Conures & Caiques! While I do breed birds, the primary function of the page and what we do on Facebook is to educate fellow bird caregivers here and in the groups we have. Bird behaviour t

heir instinctive needs is completely foreign to most people, and it can lead to a lot of miscommunications & understanding. Most people grow up with a kitten or a puppy or both and have at least a general idea of how to care for them properly. Dogs and cats have been domesticated for hundreds of years; it is easier for us to “read” them and while parrots have been domesticated to some extent, their instinct is to act first think later. As prey animals, parrots react very differently to situations than dogs and cats. We strongly believe that education is key to providing parrots with safe and happy and loving homes that readily cater for more than just their basic needs. We also believe that educating the new & existing bird owners of their needs and understanding them makes for a much happier parrot & owners bond, and in turn, there will be way fewer parrots up for rehoming or adoption hopefully. While Avian Veterinarians are an especially important part of our bird’s health, some seem to put all birds under the same big umbrella as that is what they have been taught, but different birds have different needs like Conures & Caiques are instinctively cavity sleepers and not perch sleepers like a lot of others are as well as their diets are all different as well This site Beaks & Feathers Aviaries has a sister Page Beaks & Feathers Aviaries Exotic Parrots we will be updating and transferring files our website https://www.beaksandfeathersaviaries.com/ also into our bird pages and is largely an educational site with the files that we use quite often in our groups

"Some of our sun conures enjoy their daily helping of sprouts that we grow for them. Just a note: No, the one on my arm was not biting. It was just testing if it was edible, but apparently it wasn't because it didn't leave a mark."

2 of our babies a gold-capped Conure and a white-bellied Caique are off to their loving forever home in Western Australia in the morning on a jet plane. It is always a sad moment to say goodbye to them for the last time. But we try to make sure our babies go to the best loving homes 🏡

The first baby violet green cheek conure for the season, the nest of eggs, was abandoned. A fertile egg was in there, so we incubated it, and it hatched this morning at 3.55 grams.

PELLETS ARE NOT THE ANSWER.
By Dr. Jason J Crean, Biologist & Director, SXU Animal Nutrition Lab Diploma in Nutrition
In response to some messages I’ve received this morning, I thought I’d share the post below. The most common myth I hear is that ultra-processed pellets provide the “basic nutrition” or “fill the gaps” in the diet. This could not be further from the truth. There is no processed food that can satisfy the diverse needs of the many, many different species we feed. What is most ignored are not the synthetic nutrients added to these foods but instead, the effects of processing and the inflammatory compounds that can form as a result. We have seen countless birds with deficiencies on a mostly pelleted diet so please don’t rely on ultra-processed foods to satisfy your bird’s needs. Focus on real, whole food where they can actually get their nutrients, many of which aren’t possible to acquire through a pellet.
Some tips for this group:
1) Search the term “presentation” as you will see a post on ways to get your birds eating more of the diversity you are offering.
2) Watch the videos of veterinarian Dr Karen Becker as we discuss these common myths at drcrean.com/nutrition
3) Watch our video of veterinarian Dr Jamie Abete discuss nutrition myths as well at https://www.facebook.com/share/p/h631v69KZMgSPaDp/?
4) Search for “Becker” and “Abete” so you can see addition content from these avian veterinarians talk about the truths behind nutrition.

I get asked about pellets on a daily basis. I thought I would create a post on my thoughts without comments because people tend to get very defensive about what they’re feeding their birds. So many pellets include added sugars like molasses and other types of sugar, which is entirely unnecessary and can lead to fatty liver disease. Please read your labels.
The only pellet I can honestly recommend is TOP’s parrot Food, as it's cold pressed (not heat processed) and doesn’t include added sugars and other undesirable ingredients. They also don’t claim to be a “complete” diet which just doesn’t exist for the wide variety of birds we keep. I know many claim their pellet of choice to be superior because of the ingredients but the ingredients don’t matter if they are then heated and denatured (to deprive of natural qualities). I am more firm than ever on my stance that a diverse diet of raw whole foods is the very best we can offer. Thanks for all being on my group as we continue to educate and share.

Some of our green-cheeked conures were enjoying the last rays of the afternoon sun. They all tried to squeeze onto one part of the front perch, which was still in the sun, in their 4m long X 2.4m high aviary.

Our little mealworm farm is going great after getting our first lot of mealworms to start our farm only just 4 1/2 months ago 🙂have learnt heaps along the way.
Our birds love them as a nutritious treat and surprising enough so do our dogs lol

As we like to feed our birds (Conures, Caiques, and Amazons) a natural diet and nothing processed, we started a Mealworm farm for them with some worms just four months ago. They have gone through a full life cycle and are halfway through their second life cycle, meaning they have gone from worms to pupae and beetles and back to worms, and now we are back to the beetle stage again.
All our birds loved them at first sight. There is a video of our Amazon and Sun Conures' first encounter with the mealworms.

Some of the sun conures, and some pied sun conures babies, which we are feeding at the moment. One is a special needs baby that came in from the nest box with only part of a wing as mum seems to have got a little overzealous getting the little one moving in the cold weather we have been having and pinched on its wing a little too hard when it was little.

Looks like an early start to the 2024 season as have baby Green Cheek Pineapple Conures hatched already, I noticed yesterday :) It is terribly cold here at the moment for raising babies for a first-time mum but seems to be doing a good job :)

The Health Benefits of a Natural Diet
Sprouts are a major part of our bird's diet every day of the year as they are a living food. It contains more than 700 times the nutritional value of fruit, veggies, & Greens but does not replace them, though they are all a major part of a complete diet. The health benefits of a natural diet are healthier birds, fewer health issues, fewer illnesses, excellent healing properties, fewer problems associated with egg production, and a higher quality of viable eggs for breeding birds. A deeper saturation of feather colour and maintaining a healthier weight level. With no obesity problems, even birds who have developed feather destruction behaviours respond well to being fed a diet rich in a blend of sprouted legumes, seeds, and grains.

3 little Chunky Sun conures babies. We are hand-raising at the moment. They are such little characters. The youngest little ratbag, when it sees us feeding the others we are hand-raising, will do its best to climb out of the tub and come marching past everyone else as if "It's my turn now, isn't it" You just have to love Sun Conures personality as they are full of it and love and snuggles

07/05/2024

All of our Sun Conures and other birds love their sprouts and get a little excited when sprout time comes around each day. Lol, one little ratbag wanted me to move them a little closer to him; apparently,🤣🤣🤣
