For feline guardians who need or choose conventional antibiotic treatment for their kitties, and if you are able to give once daily liquid medications to your animals, please decline the long acting injectable antibiotic convenia. While it is marketed as a two week antibiotic medication, residues of the medication may last 65 days! That could be very risky if there is a sensitivity to this medication. A cat presented to me today who had received convenia 3 days earlier for inappropriate urination. She otherwise seemed healthy. That same day after the shot she stopped eating and started progressively vomiting with developing severe weakness and low body temperature. She presented 3 days later with jaundice, and severe diabetic shock with near terminal kidney failure. Sadly the prognosis is very poor in this situation.
