Please do not buy. Throw them away if your dog gets one as a gift. Giving rawhide to a dog is never a good idea.

Many of these so called treats end up with the dog “enjoying” some time in a veterinary surgery over Christmas. The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China.

The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulfide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white “pure” look and remove the rancid smell.

Now comes the pretty festive colors and the glue to form cute shapes. On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium and formaldehyde.

If that wasn’t bad enough, they regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

Be aware ⚠️⚠️⚠️

A friend of mine in Assagay this weekend had a case where a stray dog got into their property and sadly it had rabies. This was in Assagay closer to Castle Road side. I highly recommend checking your dog’s vaccination and making sure they are up to date, If they are, consider a rabies booster shot, please speak to your vet if you are unsure.

There are many people and children who walk on our streets, please be very careful.

Heart broken, devastated and guilt-ridden..... Letting you go has been the most difficult to process decision I've ever had to make.

I'm SO sorry we couldn't do more or fight harder for you my girl but I want you to know that i couldn't have wished for a more amazing companion, protector and family member.

You will be sorely missed by each of us and remembered for your gentle temperament, special bond with the M&Ms, love for food, and that wiggle bum each time I came home.

So so sorry my girl, love you forever.

For those pet owners reading this, I URGE you to make sure your pets vaccinations are up to date!

We had an incident earlier this week where a stray dog managed to enter our property, naturally our dogs confronted it and chased it off. The stray was picked up and dropped off with the nearest vet who immediately suspected a possible rabies case. The dog was euthanized and the state vet was alerted.

Whilst waiting the rabies results, we had our local vet give each of our dogs a rabies booster shot, even though there was no clear bite or visible wounds on either of the dogs.

Our 2 older dogs were fully vaccinated for rabies, but our dear Mika(barely over a year old) had only received 1 rabies vacc to date, with her annual follow up due in September this year.

We received the devastating news yesterday from the state vet, confirming the stray was infected with rabies. Our hearts dropped.

Due to Mika only having had 1 vacc, she was deemed 'unvaccinated' and high-risk to all that she comes into contact with. Compounding the issue, is rabies can present itself anywhere form 0-6mths after being contracted.

By law we had to euthanize a perfectly healthy pet because we did not have her vaccinations fully up to date.

I wouldn't wish this scenario on anyone, so please check your dogs/cats vaccinations books/records, and ensure you sort them out ASAP.

Secondly check you properties fence/perimeter walls for any access points to prevent unwanted contact and potentially infected visitors mixing with your pets.

I hope this post saves at least 1 pets life, so that our Mika's loss was not in vain.

Important announcement!!🚨

Cases of dogs who have been dying of sudden onset liver failure over the past month keep coming to our clinic and we suspect that we have seen more than 150 cases by now.

Clinical signs include
- Loss of appetite and associated weight loss
- Jaundice (yellow colouration of gums, eyes, skin etc)
- Bloody diarrhoea (Severe bleeding from the intestines)
- Vomiting
- Usually death within 24-48 hours after symptoms started

Diagnostic tests of these dogs have been extensively analyzed at the BSPCA and point to liver failure from a toxin, which could be aflatoxin.
Aflatoxin is a toxin produced naturally by a mould often found on maize and ground nuts.

BSPCA has tested maize meal and madeya samples from owners whose dogs died after showing above symptoms and the majority of these samples showed a very high level of the toxin, confirming the suspicion of aflatoxicosis as the reason for these deaths.

If you are feeding low quality maize to your pets we strongly recommend switching to a different starch such as rice. Dogs are highly sensitive to the toxin and don’t tolerate high levels of it but get sick and die quickly.
