Going winners dog, best of winners, and best of breed for his second 4 point major last weekend to finish at the Sammamish KC. I can't thank you enough to all those who have helped and supported me along the way, we couldn't have done it without you, and to Mazzie for being the best boy.

The Field Spaniels also showed at Cudahy Kennel Club in conformation. I didn't make it over to watch for day one due to conflicts with scentwork competition but was able to watch day two.

Boogie! Periwinkle's Swing, Swedish import bred by Helena Borell and owned by Myra Johnson and Alan Johnson , arrived in Wisconsin August 1st and came out of the Gate at his first show to pick up 2 points going Winners Dog on Day One, shown by Kylie Jo .

Trixie! CH Calico's Speed Racer (Race x KC) picked up the final point needed to finish her Grand Championship title, going BOS on Day One, Select on Day Two, handled for owner Kylie Hirschy by Elizabeth Rosenow .

KC! CH Calico's That's The Way I Like It FCAT CA DJ DN TKA FTN (Owen x Jackie) went BOS on Day Two for another point toward her Grand Championship, owned/handled by Kylie Hirschy.

Flirt! New CH* Calico's Take The Money And Run BCAT was WB/BOW both days to score the final 4 singles for the Championship title. Handled yesterday by Kylie Hirschy, and today to the final points needed by Junior Handler Emma ( Trista Hertel ).

Tor! Calico's Viking Plunder SCN TKN (Ax x Destiny) is closing in on the Championship title, earning 2 points Day Two handled by Emma to Winner's Dog, for owner Lisa Schaitberger . And yes, I did take him in for Best Of Winners in my scentwork gear...my contribution to the conformation showing.

Ran back...literally...to scentwork to be an observer so I could see a couple of students work their dogs. Always helpful when I can do this and pick up on how the dog/handler team navigated the search. Allows me to provide better instruction and identify where I might not be concentrating enough in class.

Out to eat with Lisa after driving back to Waukesha and then home for a nap. Better but not 100% from whatever this respiratory thing (covid negative) I have had and was literally down and out with for over a week, so that's my excuse for not weeding or getting the trimming done on the lawn.

Busy weekend at Cudahy Kennel Club’s show that offered conformation, scent work, and Fast CAT competitions.

Freezee! Sniffed her way to three new titles: SBAE* (Buried Advanced Elite), SEAE* (Exterior Advanced Elite) and with that, completed the requirements for the level title: SWAE* (Scentwork Advanced Elite). Freezee is Heartwood & Calico's Frozen Assets From Gooseberry SWM SWAE* SCME SBEE SHDN TKI FTI (Bond x Pumpkin). Co-owned by Becki Jo Hirschy and Myra Johnson. She wasn't thrilled about posing for a "pretty" photo since she felt dinnertime was overdue.

Kate Anderson writes: This weekend Java and I went the the Cudahy Kennel Club Scent Trial. Java finished her SBA (Scentwork Buried Advanced) element title and with that met the requirements for the SWA (Scentwork Advanced) level title signifying that she has titled in all four elements for the advanced level. Java is CH Calico's Feelin' The Java Jolt N The Knick Of Time FDC CA FCAT3 SWA* SCE SIA SEA CGCA CGCU TKN FITB (Gibson x Zoe), owned, trained, loved by Kate Anderson. Calico's Star Wars Phase Of The Moon BCAT DJ (Frankie x KC), owned and handled by owner Samantha Nicole Grandfield to a major win yesterday.AND since Traya was already wet from showing in the rain today, she was rewarded with one of her favorite things... jumping off the dock! She jumped all the way into her DS (Dock Senior) title.

Waukesha Kennel Club dog show weekend Day One is in the books. Two show for Field Spaniels...the regular classes at WKC and the concurrent FRFSC Specialty show.
It was...HOT ... kind of the usual for this show although one of the participants remembered the year of the tornado when everyone was herded into the arena. No tornado this year and actually there really was a nice breeze...except running around the ring, I sure didn't notice. Thank you to Nadene Wahnschaffe-Seymour for hosting the late lunch at your RV. Much appreciated. Thank you also to Beverly Colby for stepping in to give our hard-working ring steward a chance to go get some lunch!

We did have some super results.

Oscar! was show by Katrina Guse for owners Ed & Peggy Dvorsky to Best Of Breed. Oscar is GCHB Calico's Lights Camera Action FCAT CGC (Partner x Celeste). Oscar was also entered in the special Veterans competition, earning a Veteran Group 3 later in the day. And he was also Select Dog at the specialty show.

Emma ( Trista Hertel ) has worked hard at 4H dog classes and trained baby Riley to be a show dog and... drumroll... Winners Dog/Best of Winners for a 5-point Specialty win. Riley is Calico's Pocketful Of Sweet Dreams CGC (Dozer x Leeloo) owned by Lisa Watson Roby .

Yesterday results and don't have a photo...Tor! Calico's Viking Plunder SCN TKN (Ax x Destiny) added the BCAT title to the end of his name. Owned and handled in performance by Lisa Schaitberger .

Nala! Ch Heartwood & Calico’s Circle Of Life SCN (Ralphie x Elsa) couldn't let her Auntie Freezee get all the ribbons for being a good sniffer girl. She earned the SBN (buried novice) and SCNE (container novice elite), plus moved up to Advanced Containers and earned her first Q. As usual, Nala would rather not pose for her photo op and new titles are subject to AKC confirmation.

Freezee! Heartwood & Calico's Frozen Assets From Gooseberry SWM SCME SINE SBNE SHDN TKI FTI (Bond x Pumpkin) went 8 out of 8, earning herself the Qs needed to finish up her Advanced Buried Elite (SBAE) and Excellent Buried Elite (SBEE) title. And she did it in style with 2 Firsts, 4 Seconds, 1 Third, and one "fifth" placement. All new titles, as usual, subject to AKC confirmation.

CH Calico's My Way DCAT SCA SIN SEN has added SBN (with some nice placements, including a 1st) and by virtue of completing all Novice elements, he now adds SWN to his growing list of AKC performance titles. Final show in West Bend today. Original judge scheduled was ill so alernate judge was necessary. Ms. Emily Fish (provisional judge for the breed) stepped up for the assignment. Since the judge was taking on Field Spaniel judging as an addition to her already assigned breeds, Field Spaniels had a ring change and a much later ring time. A few exhibitors chose to make use of the option that is essentially "you can request your entry fee back when there is a judge change". I don't blame them...if you are traveling any distance, the extra time delaying starting the trip home might make pulling an entry or two a sensible choice. For me, being able to sleep in an extra hour was fabulous. Leisurely having a cup (or three) of coffee meant being far less crabby! Arriving later in the day meant way better parking as other folks had already left. The parking fairy sprinkled her good parking fairy dust.

The classes at Kettle MorainevKennel Club were designated as a specialty show, so once again we offered the fancy rosettes by Sindi ... so happy we were able to get on her schedule as the Rosettes are big, bling-y, and beautiful.

All in all...everything stayed pretty smooth on the surface although there was plenty of frantic paddling going on under the surface.

For me... blessed to show my dogs and see them do well, I did not get a run in my "good luck pantyhose" and I didn't lose my skirt (an almost horrific event in the ring that puts "friends" into fits of hysterical laughter) ... feel free to ask Julie Smiley in person for the whole story sometime!

For all y'all, entries for the next FRFSC show events close on July 10th, MBF superintendent. Lots of great stuff planned including a potluck BYOB, "at cost" thyroid blood test draws by Andrea Tobolski Dobson (and she is totally awesome at blood drawing samples required) offered to Field Spaniels with OFA submission fees paid by FRFSC (total blood draws limited to 20), "adequate" free outdoor grooming space for Field Spaniels under a grooming tent located near the assigned show ring, and much much more...you won't be bored!

Long long LOOONG day in West Bend at the Kettle Moraine Kennel Club FRFSC supported entry and the FRFSC concurrent specialty show. Up at o'dark o'clock to finish packing the car, get dogs loaded in car, make sure dogs left home would be comfortable for the day, and on the road by 7 am. Even though I had driven up the day before to drop off crates and grooming table, as well as to set up Club stuff, I *still* had a full load other than the dogs! Found reasonable parking for getting there somewhat later than I really wanted. Already tired before the show started! End result proved it was all a worthwhile effort, even though I will continue to claim that I am just under a little dark raincloud every year coordinating these West Bend shows for Field Spaniel entrants. True to form, we had to replace a judge again this year due to the scheduled judge being ill. Things just don't ever run smoothly behind the scenes although I think the end result always looks good and a lot of FRFSC members really step up to help. Although I am listing some results here, full results can be found by going to onofrio.com and scrolling down the home page to catalog and real time results.

We Trialed in Fond du lac, WI Wind, Rain and Heat. Both girls now have new Element titles. Katie now moves on to Excellent across the board and took her first title in exterior excellent with a third place. Hannah now has conquered Novice Interior and Exterior with 2 first places and three fourth, first in Wind some in rain and than blistering heat!! She never missed a step. Very proud of their enthusiasm for Nose Work and Trialing in general.

Show weekends...gotta say, as usual the ribbons are secondary to the fun. Drove up to Manitowoc Saturday for an 11:15 am ring time, arriving around 10 and the "parking fairy" sprinkled fairy dust and granted the wish for fabulous parking right in front of the show building. And that was a good thing as the skies opened up and the rain started. So glad (not) that I blew out coats since they got nicely wet in the short 30 feet running into the building. Set up a row of crates and devised a quick plan for how we would work getting dogs back and forth since no directly ringside crates were allowed. MANY thanks to Nadene Wahnschaffe-Seymour and kids for helping out so much...also to Andrea Tobolski Dobson 's significant other for good Saturday wrangling Rayah since after dog classes, she was the first girl needed in the ring. By the time we were in the ring for judging, the noon whistle went off which was not appreciated by a few of the young dogs we had to show. In the end, Tor (Calico's Viking Plunder SCN TKN...Ax x Destiny) picked up 3 points as Winners Dog and then handed off and piloted to Best Of Winners very capably by Johnny Seymour. Flirt (Calico’s Take The Money And Run BCAT) picked up 2 points as Winners Bitch. Baby Hayes (Calico’s Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This...Dozer x Leeloo) added to his pile of Reserve Winners ribbons while Rayah (Calico’s Livin' The Sweet Dream..Dozer x Leeloo) picked up her first reserve and apparently the ramp games we have played...well, the games worked SO well that Rayah is now a "ramp sucker" as in "I love going up and down the ramp".
Trixie (CH Calico's Speed Racer...Race x KC) went Best Of Opposite while Nala (CH Heartwood & Calico's Circle Of Life SCN...Ralphie x Elsa) was Select. Jordyn Seymour and Jack (GCH Upland's Gentleman Jack BCAT) won the breed and looked great getting an owner handler Group 3 later in the day plus looked awesome in the regular Sporting Group - great representative of the breed.

OMG...we found a Perkins restaurant for lunch...I did restrain myself and only had one piece of French Silk pie...like my all-time favorite. Checked into our hotel which gave us some concern when first looking at it BUT proved to be a great place to stay. Other than having to dodge sea gulls... quite literally dodging sky bombs (!!)...as we were about 2 blocks from Lake Michigan. Door dashed a pizza delivery to the hotel room later evening.

Up at o'dark o'clock to walk dogs and head to the show site where the parking fairy again granted the favor of great parking. Sunny 🌞 and no rain! And yes, I forgot my second show outfit at home so wore the same one and the fashion police did not arrest me. Sundays results: Goose (Sylviidae Talk To Me Goose) picked up his first major and Rayah went Winners Bitch/handed off to Nadene who piloted the wild child to Best Of Winners for a major. Best of Breed once again to Jack, BOS to Trixie leaving her one single point shy of earning the Grand CH, and Nala Select.

Packed up and headed home to meet up with Terry Middleton to hand off Flirt AND Terry cooked and brought me dinner! Bonus!

Calico's Java Jolt N The Knick of Time (Gibson & Zoey) participated in Central WI Dog Sports Club - CWKC & SWCCW at their UKC Show today. Java recieved a Special Invite for receiving a Best In Show during 2023 for Veterns and Altered. They call it the Best of the Best. We'll Evelyn and Java rocked the Invite winning Best of the Best Alter and Best of the Best Vetern Shows. They also did nosework earn titles in Noive Vehicle Search and Interior Search. They went 4 for 4 today.

In the regular show today the won Best Vetern and Reserve Alter. Evelyn and Java make a great team!!

Well it has been long time since I have changed my cover photo (almost 2 years in fact) but it seemed time to say some "thank-you"s and to showcase the black dog in both his graceful and refined photos and his less graceful, natural habitat 😆. I can not thank Edward Dvorsky and Peggy Dvorsky enough for allowing me to embark on so many adventures (some thankfully less eventful than others) with both them and their dog.

I have learned a lot at the end of this particular lead and it is wonderful to show a dog who can roll into my home not only to show but to spend time on my couch as a member of the household. Any dog who can blend in seamlessly with my boys is welcome any time.

While Oscar does embody the beauty of this breed from a strong top line to a moderate coat, from a refined and noble head to a correctly level tail carriage, a hallmark of the breed, he is also the personification of the most important part of any breed, the temperament. In this case, of course, that of a true Field Spaniel as described in the AKC standard:

"Unusually docile, sensitive, fun-loving, independent and intelligent, with a great

When posting results we often tend to post the results and not the non-qualifying (NQ) runs that one day turn into Q’s. This was a very classic Starlet run popping out at weave pole 10 and instead of going back and redoing the weaves poles and demotivating her we kept going. Then what she does is she starts to make up her own course. There are those days that you walk out of the ring and say that was a fun NQ run. Hope you enjoy and at the end she is definitely grinning! Thank you Katie Guse for this video.

One of the things we do with puppies is to start whistle training at a very basic level. The whistle we use is a "spaniel whistle" as opposed to the Acme thunderer which is also on my lanyard...see photo in the comments. You could use any whistle in reality as long as it is the same whistle meaning the same thing each and every time. Association and repetition are learning basics. A whistle is a fabulous tool because it sounds the same and does not convey emotion like the human voice. In the case of the puppies in the video, the baby Ducklings clearly know what that waxing/waning long tweet means...."Food is here! Come in close." Not seen in the video clip is my adult dogs who all came as well...yes, they did get a small treat reward. So puppies hear the "come in close" whistle and get their food. Rinse and repeat three times a day. I have had great success with this and when carried through by new owners, the dog is conditioned to always very happily and willingly "come in close" to the sound of the whistle. (and the "come in close" whistle is *never* used to call a dog to you for any kind of negative...never ever ever). It is easy and it works. An added plus is that the puppy learns that the whistle sounds have meaning which is helpful for eventual quartering, hup (field work term for sitting quickly after flushing a bird) and other commands.

The Ducklings are learning all about interactive play. They have all learned to tumble out of the whelping pen into the large weaning pen ... because that is where mommy is taking a break on her bed. They have learned the "pup pup pup" call and now we will introduce the whistle.

Aside from earning her AXJ, Jackie earned her second AX leg with a first place in her class. She got the right end of the tunnel on the trap, nailed her weave poles, and had a blast doing it all. Back to back AXJ legs for Jackie at the WWCDTC agility trials today for a ***NEW AXJ TITLE!***. She rocked the course and walked away with a first place in her class and a fabulous run. Pending AKC she will now be GCH CH Calico’s Fashion Icon OA AXJ* NF CGCA CGCU TKI DN RN (Partner x Celeste)

This is Jackie's second AXJ leg! It was a course that proved difficult for even some very experienced dogs and she really ran wonderfully. That yellow tunnel was calling her name but she stayed focused and came out with a 1st place in her jump height! Edit: Reposted because the video cut out about 10 seconds in. The whole run now plays, look at that girl fly!
