Good Afternoon, Friends,

All Front Range communities are home to Coyotes, and Coyote mating season is underway (from mid-January to mid-March). Typically, these animals mate for life and both female and male Coyotes share in raising their young.

Coyotes usually avoid people, but bold and protective behavior isn’t unusual during this time of year, and it is not uncommon for them to act more aggressively to protect their family and territory. If you live in Coyote territory, make a mental note that the next 4-6 weeks is prime time for mating, so please do not leave your dogs alone, especially at dawn and dusk. Coyotes view cats and dogs as potential prey and larger dogs as threats or competition. Responsible pet guardianship helps to mitigate most human-coyote conflict. When taking your pets out for a walk, be sure to keep them on a leash at all times.

Coyotes are most active at dawn and throughout the night. Often affectionately referred to as ‘America’s Song Dog’, you might hear these beautiful animals more frequently as they vocalize to claim territory or partners.

If you encounter a Coyote, make eye contact; leash larger dogs and pick-up smaller dogs; wave your arms, and make yourself as big and loud as possible.

When your cat finds ME dead 😹

Yes, I caused an intestinal blockage (not rawhide but just as indigestible), and paid the $2500 vet bill. Be careful!

On National Reptile Day, I wanted to highlight Colorado’s state reptile, the Western Painted Turtle, which became the state reptile thanks to the efforts of Jay Baichi's 4th grade class in 2008.

Painted turtles live in all parts of the state and are colorful, just like Colorado.
