Pain is often the hidden cause behind sudden changes in your dog’s behaviour.

Here are some examples:
1. A dog suffering from intervertebral disc disease ( IVDD ) might show aggression if lifted or touched on the back, reacting with growling or snapping due to sharp pain.

2. Dogs with ongoing ear infections may suddenly become aggressive when someone touches their head or ears due to persistent irritation and discomfort.

3. Due to hormonal imbalances, dogs with hypothyroidism can exhibit symptoms like increased irritability, mental dullness, unprovoked aggressive outbursts, alongside physical signs such as inability to tolerate the cold, obesity, excessive shedding, lethargy, changes in eating habits and sleep patterns.

Unpopular Opinion 💭

No one likes to think that their dog could be capable of biting.
One of the most common questions parents get when someone wants to greet their dog is, “Does your dog bite?”
If your dog likes meeting new people, the answer is probably no. That said, it’s important to normalise conversations about your dog’s boundaries and to advocate for your dog by being honest about their temperament.
This transparency helps set realistic expectations for interactions, ensure the safety of others, allows you take necessary precautions and provides your dog with the understanding and management they need.

Each dog will have a different threshold for what pushed them to resort to biting, and some dogs may require additional support, such as behaviour modification training, gradual and controlled socialisation, environmental management, medical evaluation, calming aids, avoidance of trigger stacking and educating the guardians on recognising signs of stress or discomfort in the dog & understanding how to respond appropriately to prevent escalation, to help them feel secure and to prevent situations where they may bite.
