Last week, our hearts became heavy as we bid farewell to the beloved Baby Blue 🩵
This mischievous yet gentle soul entered our lives in 2019 when he was just a fragile five-day-old calf. Rescued from being “knocked on the head” at a dairy, Baby Blue was given a second chance at life, where he found love, care, and the opportunity to live out his life free from exploitation.
Baby Blue's journey was not without its challenges. Throughout the past five years, he found himself in three different homes due to various change of circumstances beyond his control. Each time, we welcomed him back with open arms, honouring the promise we make to every animal that enters our gates: we will always keep them safe, happy and free from harm.
Since May, Baby Blue has been under our watchful care once more, battling a squamous cell carcinoma in his right eye. He underwent surgery to have the cancerous mass removed, but sadly it returned in both eyes. Knowing that baby blue was not going to improve, we made the heart wrenching decision to end his suffering.
Unfortunately this condition, exacerbated by Australia’s intense UV rays, is not uncommon for animals with light colouring like his. We did everything within our power to manage his pain, ensuring he remained comfortable every moment he had left. He wore protective eye masks, sun creams and was given ample shade to escape the sun. Sadly, this condition is incredibly common in Queensland cows, yet they are denied the basic care and comfort that Baby Blue was able to experience.
Baby Blue was surrounded by those who loved him deeply as he crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. He left this world knowing the warmth of a gentle touch and the soothing murmur of kind words. Although our hearts are heavy with his absence, we find solace in knowing that Baby Blue experienced a life filled with compassion and dignity, a testament to the mission we strive to fulfill every day.
Farewell Baby Blue 🩵🕊️ it was an honour to know and love you
