Happy Adoption Day, Neah! You are such a sweet, gentle girl and I'm so glad we were able to climb your namesake mountain a few weeks ago to celebrate our last two years together.

Our journey has had a lot of ups and downs as we continue to rehabilitate your reactivity and eliminate your separation anxiety, but through these hills and valleys you have taught me so much. I'm a better trainer not just because of you, but for you. Thank you.

Isn't she adorable in her coat?! ♥️

If you're able to help, the need is great.

🥳 ANOTHER SEPARATION ANXIETY TRAINING MILESTONE!!

Separation anxiety training can be a rollercoaster. We didn't have a good session on Tuesday night. Neah just wouldn't settle and stayed looking out the window no matter how many warm up departures we completed. Then last night she did something she's NEVER done.

Looking at the whole picture, on Tuesday she was still recovering from the stress of her longest boarding stay a few weekends prior, along with a day at daycare the previous day (which most likely carried the stress of not knowing if she'd be picked up that evening or not).

So, we pulled back to keep moving forward. We gave her a night off and then last night got back at it.

For our first warm up she stayed laying down on the couch in my office. However we saw she was licking a small boo-boo on her foot. We came in and I went to her and said "uh-uh"...aka "I don't like that." She stopped and followed me into the living room.

Not knowing what to do, but knowing something was up, she asked for petting, then sat looking down the hallway to my office. I walked her to my office and invited her back on my couch but she wasn't interested.

Back in the living room, she settled on her bed. Well, let's give this a go. I said her cue marking our departure "We'll be back", and out we went. Then something amazing happened.

Once she heard the garage door closed, Neah got up, walked to my office, contemplated getting on, jumped up, and instead of going to stare out the window, immediately laid down and slept. She's NEVER seen us leave, got up, and gone straight to settling (in her desired location).

Despite the difficulties, rehabilitating Neah is such a rewarding adventure. I'm so proud of her!

With all the other training we've been incorporating with Neah, along with our move, we haven't been able to be consistent about her dental care, until now!

It took us 3 months to socialize her to nail dremeling so I'm repeating what worked. Slow and steady. It's easy to want to rush it, but Neah needs to determine the pacing.

Here I'm helping her association of the fairly close, silent brush to some kibble as well as a noisy brush at a greater distance to kibble, even adding some duration.

Keeping her teeth clean isn't just good for her dental health, but can help prevent other issues as well (heart disease, stroke, diabetes, etc).

One day at a time.

I love this video of Paris learning Stand in Dog Manners Class.

It was new for her and her mom, but they did a great job working through the distractions and acknowledging the progress toward the goal...and of course completing the stand. Woohoo!

This is not only a helpful behavior to teach your dog, but it's a doggie squat too, so great for their gluts, core, quads, and hamstrings.

Looking to teach your dog a fun, useful skill like this, as well as other important behaviors and/or exercises? I'm available for private sessions online or in person (Eugene/Springfield), and my group dog training classes will start in West Eugene Spring/Summer 2025.

(Belated) Thanksgiving Weekend Report: Neah did great meeting her Grandparents for the first time* AND briefly being in a hotel room solo while Mom got breakfast at the lobby's buffet.

Bagheera, our cat, is coming with us on our next road trip adventure. To help set him up for success we're giving him treats in his carrier everyday, have anxiety meds ready, and his packing list prepared, including comfort blankets for familiar smells and "places" in the new environment.

*They weren't our first (overnight) guests, but our longest in this new space. She's a nervous but friendly dog with humans, so we communicated her need for space, separation anxiety, etc. prior to their arrival

During their visit there were a few times Neah felt uncomfortable with their proximity, motions, etc., and she'd back up and/or walk away and because they knew her tendencies, they respected her actions (aka be your dog's advocate!). We talked about what caused her response (often something was on the floor that they didn't want her to get, which of course is absolutely an important thing to avoid, but being hovered over is threatening to dogs, hence the nervous response), and how we could work together to avoid similar situations again.

If needed we would have integrated more management tools (hands free leash, etc.), but we would NEVER punish Neah for being scared/her response.

It's impossible to avoid any stressors, but it's important to recognize her signals, and respond so she doesn't feel she has to escalate her feelings to be heard. Instead when she was stressed I gave her something fun to do away from all the "action", in this case a chew stick 🥰.

Neah got to visit her namesake mountain* for the first time. We'll be back again another time to climb it but this was a great first trip.

*We climbed this mountain with Berlin in 2019 and named Neah after this scenic location and memorable day.

What a wonderful first pack walk in Eugene ♥️♥️♥️.

You wouldn't know by looking at them, but these are two reactive dogs who enjoyed a lovely walk together and were walking within a few feet of each other by the end.

When we encountered other dogs on the trail we integrated both management and training techniques and no one went over threshold. Woohoo!

Pack walks aren't just for reactive dogs though. All dogs (and their people) are welcome 😉.

There won't be a pack walk in December, but stay tuned for January 2025's date.

Separation Anxiety Training Milestone!!

After 22 months of training, hubby and I went out to a live performance last night...together!!, all while Neah was relaxed and resting at home...alone...for 3.5 hours!! Ok, Bagheera, our kitty cat, was home, but his presence doesn't help ease her anxiety. Not that her adds to it, he just isn't, well, me or Dad.

Days are harder for her so we're not planning any matinees just yet, and we'll continue to give her shorter evening practices, but the work is working!

(If you haven't been following along, we adopted Neah at age 2, and at the start, 22 months ago, she wasn't able to be alone for even a few seconds without frantically pacing throughout the house from entry door to entry door).

I've never been so proud of a sleeping dog ♥️♥️♥️.

This girl did so well at her first official vet visit in our new city!!

I prepped her with five "happy visit" to get her comfortable with the space and create rewarding experiences near/with the staff, as she so decided.

The day of her appointment she took treats from the tech and Dr. who allowed her the space to come to them on her terms, AND easily got her vaccines, a teeth exam, and more.

I'm so proud of her growth over the last (almost) two years, grateful for the effort we put in together that made this visit a success, and appreciative to the clinic for being compassionate and understanding.

When the Dr told me the cautiousness is a sign of intelligence and that I picked a "good one", I almost cried. It's so easy for others to judge your dog, and in turn, you, and we've been made to feel inadequate at other facilities, our efforts and progress unnoticed, diminished and/or questioned, so her kind words meant so much to me.

Not every dog is happy go lucky, but with time, patience, and a jar of cream cheese 🤣 we can help them navigate and overcome the situations that make them nervous.

Happy Halloween! Remember to keep your pets safe and away from the front door, candy, and decorations.
