The Power of Nose Work! February Fun Scent Games Class!
Did you know that a dog’s sense of smell is between 10,000 and 100,00 times stronger than that of humans and is one of the main ways that dogs interpret and understand the world around them? Sniffing is one of the most important things you can let your dog do on walks, in your yard and in new environments.
Here are just a few reasons why you should provide your dog with as many nose work opportunities as possible:
🐾Builds Confidence and a Strong Bond Between You and Your Dog: Dogs LOVE to sniff and explore. Nose work is not obedience training, instead it encourages dogs to make choices, problem solve and empowers them to tap into their natural instinct. Allowing your dog to engage in a normal, fun dog behavior and reinforcing it helps build confidence and a trusting relationship.
🐾Provides Enrichment and Mental Stimulation: A happy and healthy dog needs opportunities to explore their world and participate in activities that engage the mind. Many behavior problems in our dogs are a result of being bored and under-exercised. Most dogs spend a large part of their days indoors and confined. When they’re outside, they are rarely allowed to engage in natural dog behaviors such as sniffing, digging, and running. We often forget how smart dogs are and like humans, they need to be mentally stimulated to prevent boredom. Nose work is one of the best ways to provide enrichment and mental stimulation for our dogs.
🐾All Dogs Can Participate: Nose work is for any dog regardless of breed, age, size, energy level or physical abilities. Dogs don’t need to have any other abilities other than using their nose. It provides working breeds and high energy dogs a job, older dogs and dogs with physical limitations a fun and engaging activity, and shy and fearful dogs an activity that builds confidence.

UPCOMING FUN SCENT GAMES CLASS!
Does your dog love to use their nose or are you looking for a fun activity for your dog that provides mental stimulation? Then join the Fun Scent Games class! Your dog will learn fun games to search for food. This popular sport enables you to wear your dog out mentally so it is ideal for active dogs, dogs with physical limitations or anyone who just wants to play a fun game with their dog. Dogs learn to systematically search boxes for hidden food. The level of difficulty increases each week and it is fascinating to watch the dogs catch scent and make a find. According to Dr. Ian Dunbar, mental exercise can tire a dog out more than physical exercise.
