We are working hard to keep all our guests comfortable during this extreme heatwave. All the outdoor rabbits and guinea pigs have ice packs to lay on or frozen hot water bottles, and extra shade. It's a bit more tricky with chickens but they have plenty of shade and water and we are misting the whole area with the jet wash every half hour. The indoor pets are the lucky ones today, it is lovely and cool in the house.

This is one of our new guinea pig runs taking shape. Some of the outdoor runs we were previously using for guinea pigs are no longer suitable as they haven't got grass or they have big rabbit hutches with a steep ramp, which guinea pigs don't seem to be able to handle. So we are building 2 new runs with hutches for them. They have wooden sides instead of wire mesh so that our guests feel more safe and secure and when finished they will have a covered area over the top to hide under. And most importantly they will have lots of grass!

I hope all our customers have been watching The Secret Life of Our Pets on ITV and found out how amazing all your pets are. Like your rabbits who can hear something from 2 miles away and your guinea pigs who can, when measured in body lengths, run as fast as a cheetah. And rats driving cars! Truly great programme and worth watching as it's not just about cats and dogs for a change (although they are amazing too). We love all the rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens that board with us, but It's great to have some more unusual guests occasionally. This is Herby, the African Pygmy Hedgehog who was with us over Christmas. We didn't see a lot of him as he is nocturnal but we managed to get a couple of pictures.

Our business has really taken off this year and we are looking for some extra help caring for our boarding pets during the school holidays. This would be great experience for a 15/16 year old who wants to work with animals. It would need to be someone fairly local to Duston as it would just be for a couple of hours, 3 or 4 days a week to start with. Any young person interested can email to [email protected] and tell us their age, experience of caring for animals, and what they want to do in the future.

It's all very quiet here at the moment and we are having a well earned rest after the busiest summer we've ever had. December is getting very busy however, so if you are going away for Christmas and need boarding for your pets, book soon, there are only a few places left.

We said goodbye to Mr Whippy who has been with us for the past month. He's the most adorable, sociable guinea pig and we all fell in love with him and are going to miss him. I think he has enjoyed his stay with us but he was obviously delighted to see his owner.

We haven't posted for a while as we've been incredibly busy with so many bookings over the summer period. We also haven't been able to keep the regular updates for customers going very well as when time is short we have to prioritise giving the best possible care for the animals. Any of our customers who haven't heard from us and want to know how their pet is getting on please contact us on whatsapp if possible and we will get back to you with an update.

New additions to our little flock here at Fur and Feathers! These are rescued ducks from Fresh Start for Hens. They will eventually be sharing accommodation with our chickens but for now we are making use of one of our runs while things are fairly quiet, to give the chickens time to get to know them.

Any one recently boarding chickens with us will have noticed that on the booking form, you can choose whether you want us to keep your eggs for you and if you don't we will offer them to family, friends and neighbours for a £1.00 per box donation. This year we are donating all the proceeds to Fresh Start for Hens, a commercial chicken and duck rescue and rehoming charity. So far we have nearly £40 in our fund. So a big thank you to all the chickens!

Had to give little Spaghetti a mention, he/she was boarding with us last week and is the cutest tortoise I've seen. He/she easily fits into the palm of your hand. Too young to identify the gender at the moment. .

We have a few boarders with us at the moment including Mickey - an absolutely adorable bunny, 2 groups of chickens and bunnies Sophie and Bobby. We are expecting more boarders next week.
