We had a lovely time yesterday working with students at East Manchester Academy to build wormeries at

The wormeries will be used to divert the schools food waste from conventional waste management, creating lovely compost to use on the gardens to grow food. In doing so, this will save carbon and build carbon stores in the soil, combatting climate change.

The kids got a chance to work with tools, learn about soil ecology and were very brave handling the worms! 🪱

Thankyou to the school & Beswick Urban Growers for having us and to for supporting this project

Do you know mushrooms will grow on books?

This quick hands-on session will talk you through the process of growing oyster mushrooms on old books. Participants will have the chance to inoculate a book that they no longer want, which will then fruit at home.

This project is a fundraiser for the a q***r-led community library specialising in left-wing political theory, history and q***r literature. Hosted at the farm in

What to bring

- Bring some books to inoculate with mushroom spawn! The best books to bring are thick books made from uncoated/ not glossy paper - think a Harry Potter book.

- If you want to donate any lefty or q***r books to the Pride Library, please bring them along too.

Tickets are sliding scale £10-£15, based upon what you can afford. No one turned away for lack of funds, please email [email protected] to get in touch.

Jesse from will be joining for their Sunday Sessions on Sunday 7th July to give a workshop about mosses and liverworts

This workshop will give participants an understanding of bryophyte ecology; what makes mosses and liverworts different from other plants, why they are important, and how best to go about identifying and recording them. The workshop will involve taking a look at lots of different mosses and liverworts with a hand lens, so you can see all their tiny structures.

Win a ticket to our Soil Science Weekender!

Humanity is completely dependent on the 4 inches of topsoil covering the soil for all our food, and many of our other needs too. But what do we know about the soil, and why is it rapidly disappearing?

Join Myco for our Soil Science Weekender, where we will deep dive into what’s going on under your feet. This course will cover a theoretical understanding of key soil topics such as soil texture and profiles, soil solution chemistry, and soil erosion. We will also cover some in-the-field tests to help you understand the soil you are working with better.

The course is based at our site at on 31st Aug - 1st Sept.

To enter the competition you must:

Have you ever seen black elderflower trees before? (Well, they more accurately have lovely purple colour leaves). The pink elderflowers have this gorgeous pink colour that comes through to cordials and wines.

Here’s a gorgeous elderflower and dog rose champagne, the recipe is in the zine that attendees to Sunday’s elderflower wild walk will receive. Book online at mycomanchester.com/events

Elderflower poached apricots served with yoghurt and pistachios

To make the poached apricots I made a poaching liquid of foraged elderflower cordial (~100ml), sugar (~100g) and water (~500ml). I eyeballed the amounts but it was something along those lines.

Heat to a simmer and add in your halved and stoned apricots for about 10 mins.

I served them on top of (vegan or dairy) yogurt with some chopped pistachios.

See if you can spot the bee friend visiting the Greater knapweed flowers. 🐝🌺

This recipe is featured amongst other elderflower recipes in a little zine that is being given out on Sunday’s elderflower wild walk. Book your ticket at mycomanchester.com/events

20/06/2024

Peat is a natural product that forms when plants die, and accumulate in unique environments called peat bogs. These boggy wetland ecosystems, typically dominated by Sphagnum mosses, host a range of unique animals and plants that may only be found in a few areas of the world. If you’ve ever come on one of our plant or mushroom walks around Delamere Forest in Cheshire (we will be going there for our Mushroom Identification Weekender), we might have pointed out the peat bogs found there.

Peat, when crushed under layers of rock for a few millions of years, ultimately becomes the fossil fuel we know as coal. Peat bogs currently cover around 3% of the planet’s surface, but are responsible for storing around 15-30% of the planet’s carbon dioxide. Peat accumulates very slowly, around 0.5 to 0.6 mm per year, so it can take a very long time to recover once dug up. Due to its slow growth, it is not considered a renewable resource.

So why are we at Myco so concerned about peat? Amongst other historical reasons to extract peat, it has been a valuable resource to commercial mushroom growers—especially those growing button mushrooms. Peat holds plenty of water required to maximise mushrooms yields, and its low pH means that it resists contamination and enables repeated harvesting.

Some countries like the UK have been planning to reduce peat use, but their deadlines for action keep getting pushed back and their pledges only target specific sectors (e.g. banning garden compost containing peat while allowing extraction to continue). With the climate crisis in full swing, we at Myco don’t think this is acceptable. Though choosing to avoid peat puts us at a serious commercial disadvantage, we feel the preservation of this ancient, biodiverse, carbon capturing ecosystem is more important than short term financial gain.

As a result we pledge to never use peat in any of our growing processes, and call for immediate action to stop the extraction of it.

Come deep dive into the world of mushroom identification with us, on this weekend long course. This course will combine field trips and classroom study using keys and other materials to help you identify fungi found in the UK.

By the end of the course, you should have the skills necessary to classify mushrooms into the major groups, and identify some mushrooms to species level. You will have learned field techniques and identification skills necessary to help you to go out mushroom hunting with confidence.

We have some really exciting volunteering news!

We have managed to secure funding from for a two-year Myco Manchester Volunteering Programme starting in July. Our aim with the programme is to make mushrooms a more accessible food for more people. We’ll be focusing on a few things across that time.
- Cultivating mushrooms!
- Packing and incubating mini mushroom buckets to distribute to people who want to grow their own at home.
- Heading out to green spaces and doing surveys of what mushroom species are out there and how they’re doing.
- Using surplus veg to make fermented foods and distribute to people free of charge.

We’ll be holding our volunteering sessions fortnightly over the next two years and you can book a place by heading to the event page on our website site. The first volunteering session will take place on Thursday 4th July and is live on our website now.

As a small team we have sometimes struggled to manage volunteer requests effectively. Our new volunteering programme means that we will be able to reciprocate people’s generosity with a structured programme of learning and skill development. We look forward to seeing at the farm!

(This was a scheduled event and we had only one person sign up, so we decided to cancel. However a good few people have been in touch about the event since so we have decided to reinstate it!)

Had a lovely afternoon wandering around “the lost garden of Fallowfield” - the botanical garden at the University of Manchester.

This space, which up until now has only been used for education and research, is starting to open up more to the public. It’s great to see another green space becoming more accessible - more of this thing please!

Jesse particularly enjoyed the rare filmy ferns in the moss house and the beautiful pond and glasshouses.

Had such a lovely weekend with folks on our Woodland Ecology Weekend course. Impeccable vibes, great weather, lots of things to see and learn about!

On Saturday we started out with a historical and ethnobotanical account of what a woods is/are/were, we talked about keeping biological records, Rob led a tree identification session, and we looked at how environmental conditions change with tree densities - the edge effects.

Today we led a long, meandering tour of Fletcher Moss stopping and meeting lots of plants, trees, parakeets, mosses and fungi! Then, practiced using keys to identify plants rather than relying on recognition. We ended with a discussion on how best we can support the land in its desire to erupt in trees and become forest🌳

Thankyou to everyone who came and made this weekend magical.

For people interested in more things like this, check out our events page - the mushroom identification weekender in October might be of interest.
