It’s totally understandable as animal owners to get things wrong from time to time.

But it is important for the welfare of the animal that we are constantly educating ourselves on how we can give them the very best lives that they deserve.

If people are giving welfare advice, they’re not doing it for their own benefit, they’re doing it to help. If you ever have any questions, don’t be afraid to reach out! We are all animal lovers here, and would be happy to help.

🍃🍃Forage Friday 🍃🍃

The first in our forage Friday focus is Ribwort Plantain.

Ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) is a low-growing, perennial herb with the following characteristics:

🍃 Leaves 🍃

Long, dark green, leathery, and ribbed leaves that grow in a rosette from the base of the plant. The leaves are spear-shaped and have 3–5 strong parallel veins that run from the base to the pointed top.

🍃Flowers🍃

Small, white flowers with creamy white anthers that grow in compact heads on short, leafless stems. The flower heads are produced on grooved stalks and gradually turn brown and seed.

🍃Stems🍃

Square in profile and can be hairy

🍃Habitat🍃

Ribwort plantain is a hardy plant that can be found in many environments with soil, including fields, lawns, meadows, roadsides, waste ground, parks, and sand dunes.

From the RWAF first alerts system, Please make yourselves aware of this important update.
—————————————————————————————————-
The bad news first but please don’t forget to read on to the good news that follows it
RVHD2 update
We are aware that there is, sadly, yet another strain of Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic disease out there: “virulent” or “highly virulent” RVHD2. It’s been detected in Hungary, France, Northern Italy and the Netherlands, where it makes up approximately 50% of the cases seen (the other 50% being "classical" RVHD2). As yet, we can’t be sure of its presence in the UK, as no work has been done to look for it. We are in the process of finding out if it is possible to do any surveillance for it, but we know from past experience with previous strains, that it is only a matter of time before it gets here, if it’s not here already.
The good news is that there is a new vaccine which covers both it and the "classical" RVHD2 strain, but not RVHD1, nor myxomatosis. The bad news is that we don't expect this to be available in the UK until early next year. Because of the restriction placed on us by the Veterinary Medicine Directorate we are not able to provide the names of any vaccinations to rabbit guardians and care givers, only to clinicians such as vets. However, we are communicating this to them also so you should contact your vet for advice.
We hope to be able to give more news nearer the time of its release, including suggested vaccine regimes, for vets and for owners. Until then, please do not stop vaccinating with the currently available vaccine, as this offers the fullest possible protection available right now, , and please continue to take sensible precautions to avoid bringing it into your rabbit's environment (eg by changing outdoor footwear at the door, and being careful to forage in places with, ideally, no wild rabbits present).
If you are adding any new rabbits to your household (or if you run a rescue) then we advise quarantining any new additions for 2 weeks.

Please check your guinea pigs nails xIf guinea pig nails grow too long, they can cause a number of problems. Firstly, they can curl round and grow into the skin, which can be painful and potentially cause infection. Even if they don't grow that far, they can still be awkward for the pet and make it difficult for them to walk comfortably.
Guinea pigs require regular nail trimming. The frequency can vary among animals but should occur once a month at a minimum.
Clipping nails more often will help to create a routine and prevent the quick, or blood supply at the centre of the nail, from growing closer to the tip.
Here at Northumberland Guinea Pig Boarding and Guinea Pig Grooming I can clip your piggies nails for only £5 - please message me for an appointment x A full groom is also available for just £10. Thank you Karen x

How it all began......

When I graduated from Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens I decided to care for rescue rabbits; this became very costly with vaccinations, vet bills etc therefore to cover these costs and my love for guinea pigs as well I set up a small guinea pig boarding service. I still have 6 of my rescued bunnies and still board guinea pigs to afford there care; I also look after rabbits in their own home whilst their owners are away. I offer a groming service as well at a small additional cost for example nail clipping, hair trimming and bathing for guinea pigs only.
