We got a fancy new p**p can!

We’re hoping it serves two purposes:
1) help keep the grass clean and reduce risk of disease transmission
2) aid in f***l sample collection

If your dog (or cat) p**ps on the day of their vet visit, please bring it with you to the visit. Fido will thank you later.

Make sure to keep those pets inside tonight and away from the candy bowl.

If anyone is looking for a golden retriever puppy to love the rest of its days, I have a client currently selling some. This is not a puppy mill situation. Mom and dad are well cared for and this will be their only litter.

They are truly a bundle of joy!

This pretty girl came to see me today for her annual checkup. Her coat was so beautiful and glossy so I asked what her mom was feeding her. She replied “Purina Pro Plan.” It was refreshing to not hear of some obscure diet I’d never heard of before. Purina is tried and true. It’s what my own Bailey gets. A ton of research has gone into their formulations. It’s definitely working for this girl. I just love that smile!

This pretty girl got her forever home today. Rest assured that all these dogs and cats get a good look over prior to adoption to make sure they are healthy and ready to live their best adopted life.

There are so many to love. Come get your next best friend.

Want to give a shout out to this amazing lady on the left, Pracilla, our shelter director, who put on an awesome benefit last night to raise money for the Athens Limestone Animal Shelter. I know it was a lot of work and many individuals worked hard to make it a special night.

Celebrating the beginning of something wonderful as Dr. Jorge Acosta and I partner up to make Limestone Veterinary Clinic the very best it can be for your furry family members. We look forward to serving our community for many years to come.

While I don’t specialize in pocket pets, I’m always willing to try and help whatever species may need me. These two were a fun diversion from cats and dogs today. I love the noises these piggies make.

Had a great first day at Limestone Veterinary clinic. I miss my old crew, but I’m delighted that I have an amazing group of individuals to work with in this next season of my life.

I know many of my Best Friends clients have called to schedule appointments and I want to say a big thank you for your continued loyalty and support.

I have very much enjoyed my time working at Best Friends Animal Hospital, but it is time for me to take the next step in my career. I will begin practicing at Limestone Veterinary Clinic starting June 20th.

While I hope to continue serving all my current clients, I recognize that this locations may not be ideal for your family. I respect your decision to seek alternative care. For those of you that would like me to continue to care for your four legged family members, you don’t have to do anything but call to make an appointment and we will handle transferring your records (256-233-1515).

Thank you to all my wonderful clients and the staff that has become my family for helping me grow these past four years. Medicine is a team sport that I couldn’t do without each and every one of you.

Why might one veterinarian clinic cost more to spay a dog than another?

I know we live in a time where finances are tight for many families, so I wanted to go over a few differences that may cause an increase in price from one clinic to another.

1. Is the clinic supporting licensed veterinary technicians? These staff members go through extra education and testing to ensure your pet is well monitored prior, during and after anesthesia.

2. Speaking of monitors, does the clinic have them? These are expensive pieces of equipment that can help us detect abnormalities while your pet is under anesthesia.

3. What kind of pain management is used? I use an opioid pain medication in my sedation, an NSAID during surgery (think doggy Advil but safe for them), and a local bupivicain block where I make my incision. I also send pain meds home for aftercare for several days. This is very important to me and a step that is often skipped when avoiding “expensive procedures.”

4. Are additional medications used for things like nausea post-op? This is an added expense, but can have a great deal of impact on the patients recovery and comfort.

5. Does the vet run bloodwork prior to sedation to check for underlying conditions that may affect how the patient responds to anesthesia? Underlying conditions such as kidney disease are better managed with early detection which is possible with routine bloodwork. Certain values can make us rethink which medications we use during and after surgery.

I hope this explains some of the differences and shows the value in some of those added costs.

Some cute fuzz balls for attention.

Did you know that intestinal parasites in puppies typically come from the mom? Some even pass through the placenta and the milk. This is why it’s so important for moms to get good veterinary care before, during and after whelping puppies. Same goes for our feline queens.

I am one with the corner…the vet won’t be able to see me.

Does your kitty suffer from vet visit anxiety? We have drugs for that! Sometimes I’m not able to get a good physical exam performed when the cat is trying to eat me. I understand they are just frightened. Let me help make the visit better by taking the edge off with medication beforehand.

Sometimes it’s hard to think about getting another dog after the loss of a great one. I’m a firm believer that you always have more love to give, and even though no two dogs are the same, you will love something about each new one. This family is enjoying their new addition very much.

The O’Connor Family took a hit this week with a disastrous house fire. We ask for your understanding as this will likely lead to some rescheduling and longer than usual call back times. Please be patient with me as I need to put my family first as we recover. Your prayers are felt and kindness appreciated.

No humans or furry friends were harmed in the fire.

Happy vet tech appreciation week!

I wouldn’t be able to do anything without my wonderful staff! They have and continue to teach me so much. They have kept me from getting bit about a trillion times and they have gotten blood out of a minuscule vein on a seemingly rabid chihuahua.

You guys win the gold medal in veterinary medicine.

Give a shout out to my awesome team!!!!

I don’t always get a minute to draw all my patients, but if you ever want to ensure you get one, just ask and I’ll make it happen.
