It’s been freezing every night this week…our chickens have slowed down with egg production. I save the fresh eggs for eating and have been using the limed eggs for baking or cooking with. I am so glad I gave it a try. It has been such a game changer for us. Last winter, we didn’t buy a single egg.

I’m making cornbread to go along with a cabbage and meatball soup… And my heart is so happy to mill the corn we grew and use the lard that we grew… Maybe it’s silly but to me…this is happiness ❤️ Praising God do all of our bounty ❤️

My neighbors are the best ❤️ they take such good care of us!!

One neighbor brought us crates of apples from his tree…homemade wild turkey jerky and he learned that our boys go bananas for bananas…every time he goes to the grocery store…he drops off a bag 😊 he’s been like grandpa to the kids…the boys love to go to his property and explore ❤️

Same day, a few minutes later, another neighbor brought us her grown pears and horseradish!! She is always thinking of us…she has been very generous with sharing her plants and produce with us ❤️

God has truly blessed us with amazing people❤️ We left all of our family and friends back in Washington and it was hard…and we miss them tremendously! Our neighbors are stepping in and making sure we are loved and not lonely ❤️ It’s like our family doubled!!

This weekend was a blur…so much to do!!

The Harvest Market was a success! Isobel has a few more markets to go but a taking custom orders:)

Today’s homeschool (part of)…knife sharpening science (how to and discussion of different types of metals). I love that the kids are learning applicable skills! We are butchering chickens today.

The kids had fun pulling carrots yesterday…tiny but super sweet…

Cooking dinner from our pantry is always a favorite of mine!! When I stock the pantry with homemade goodies…I make mental notes on what meals will be made…now I get to create and enjoy!!

The volunteer pumpkins go to the chickens as a treat ❤️ 🐓 ❤️ and the Red Kuri squash (my favorite) are transformed into soufflés 😊

As the harvests get smaller…and the days get colder…the feeling of winter is coming…I only have one batch of tomato sauce worth of tomatoes left…it has been a good year…despite a rocky start…my garden…she produced a plentiful bounty❤️ we both need rest…and time to dream ❤️

This weekend (and the next) are all about winterizing the garden. She has been good to us…she needs rest! Nothing goes to waste on our homestead ❤️Made 12 quarts of sauce, 10 pints of salsa and dehydrated last of the dill last night…Morw tomatoes in the oven and peppers get preserved today…the energy in the homestead is different…Charlie said he was sad that the garden is done…I am too…but I am also excited for the colder months of resting, reflecting, planning and dreaming for 2025!

Finally had a chance to finish reading my Homesteading Monthly magazine and to my surprise I see two other favorite homesteaders (shows you how excited I was to see Gautschi’s picture, I didn’t even read the cover). •Athol Orchards•Nikki Conley wrote a beautiful article about starting an orchard. I have had the pleasure of becoming friends with Nikki and if you are in North Idaho and need a pie…this lady is amazing! Her orchard is inspiring and her teachings are priceless ❤️ Brandon Sheaed wrote an article in this issue about cooking offal! Paul and I treasure the opportunity we had to learn from Brandon (Farmstead Meatsmith) in Washington and credit him with our knowledge of raising and butchering hogs humanely and using every bit of it. He and his wife Lauren (and their beautiful family) moved their homestead to Oklahoma. Lauren made an amazing live and spleen pie…I was hesitant at first but now make it when he butcher our hogs. We are sure thankful that our paths have crossed before we both moved our homesteads❤️

Last nights dinner was chili…the exciting part is that the corn bread was made from the corn we grew and milled ourselves…it was amazing ❤️❤️❤️ Now I am going to need 1 acre to grow corn for flour 😳

It’s so windy this Sunday morning! Day 8…of my illness…feeling slightly better today…have to go check the garden since we are getting a frost tonight…our Indian summer is over? Welcome fall? Please hang out a few weeks before winter arrives and blankets the homestead…loosing two weekends to illness leaves a lot of work to be done in a very short amount of time 😞
