Border Collies, Aussies, Corgis, and other herding breeds are one-trial learners, which means a single bad experience can stick with them. They thrive on predictability and structure, so handling should be clear, positive, and on their terms when possible.
At the vet or groomer, these dogs can feel extra stressed if they don’t know what’s coming next. Adding predictability—like narrating what’s about to happen and using cooperative care techniques—can help them feel more secure.
💡 Check out these handling tips to set your herding dog up for success!

Natural Dogs...
Independent, intelligent, and sometimes a little aloof—these pups (like Huskies, Akitas, Chows, and Spitz - mong others) thrive when handling is their idea. Whether at home or the vet, respecting their boundaries and building trust through choice-based interactions can make all the difference.
If you share your life with a natural dog, you know they’re not big on forced cuddles or sudden handling—but when you earn their trust, that bond is something truly special.
💡 Check out these handling tips to set your natural dog up for success!
📌 Save this for later & tag a friend with a natural dog!

Most importantly, remember that every dog is an individual so while these tips give you good overall insight, it's important to know your individual dog's needs.

Does Your Dog Really Understand You?
Ever say something to your dog, and they just tilt their head at you? Or maybe they kind of listen, but only when they feel like it?
The truth is, most training struggles aren’t about obedience—they’re about understanding. And that’s exactly what we’re working on this month inside the Pup Parents Support Club Membership.
Here’s What We’re Practicing Together:
🏡 Creating a home environment where communication makes sense for your dog
👀 Learning to read body language so you know what they’re actually feeling
🗣️ Talking with your dog instead of just giving commands
🎾 Using play and everyday conversations to strengthen your bond
This Month Inside the Membership:
✔ Weekly lessons on real-life communication
✔ Live coaching & Q&A so you can ask questions
✔ A community of dog owners who “get it”
✔ Fun, practical training that fits into daily life
You don’t need to sound like a drill sergeant to get your dog to listen. In fact, the more you talk with them (not at them), the easier everything becomes.
Tell me in the comments ⬇️ What’s something funny or cute you always say to your dog?
I’ll go first… Willow's attention is prompted with a simple "Do you want to...."? She's always up for anything!

🚨 Snack Security Alert! 🚨
Meet Willow—the opportunist, the scavenger, the snack bandit. If the pantry door is left open, she will seize the opportunity. And my kids? Let’s just say their ability to shut the door is about as reliable as a Golden Retriever’s recall in a squirrel-infested park.
So, here we are, resorting to visual aids (see Exhibit A) in an attempt to manage the situation. Because training is great, but when it comes to dogs (and kids), management is half the battle.
🐾 Why does this matter?
Leaving food accessible to dogs isn’t just about them sneaking an extra snack—it can lead to resource guarding, dietary issues, or even dangerous counter-surfing habits. And let’s be honest, no one wants a late-night vet trip because someone inhaled an entire bag of chocolate chips.
So, when training humans fails, we adapt...
✅ Signs as reminders (will they read them? TBD. I aimed for attention with this one. The post it was trial #1)
✅ Closing doors, using baby gates, or securing food (management for the win!)
✅ Teaching impulse control—but let’s be real, Willow is smarter than my kids when it comes to delayed gratification
So tell me—what’s your #1 management hack for keeping your opportunistic pup out of trouble?

Help your pup learn that meeting new people can be a positive experience.

Who are you inviting over?

Day 3: Foil Fun 🌟
Build your pup’s confidence by letting them explore a new texture underfoot.
🧐 Try this: Lay out some aluminum foil on the floor and encourage your pup to step on it. Reward them for being brave!
🐾 Pro Tip: Place treats near the edge to gently invite exploration without luring. If you're seeing the Giraffe Neck come out when eating treats, place them much closer to your pup's comfort zone.

Day 2: The Dangling Curtain 🪟
Help your pup adjust to barriers and unexpected movement with this fun, simple activity!
🧐 Try this: Hang a lightweight sheet or curtain between two chairs. Toss a treat or toy to the other side and encourage your pup to walk through.
🐾 Pro Tip: Use a cheerful voice to encourage hesitant pups.
Let's see your setup, share a photo in the comments!

Day 1: Backpack Adventure 🎒
Help your pup get used to people carrying unusual items by starting in their safe space.
🧐 Try this: Walk around wearing a backpack, lightly packed, and add weight as your pup gets comfortable.
🐾 Pro Tip: Add a hat or scarf for extra fun once they’re ready!
Who's going to try this?

Socializing your puppy the right way builds a foundation for resilience, confidence, and trust that will last. 🐾
These 6 key principles can help you create positive experiences for your puppy:
1️⃣ Quality > Quantity: Focus on calm, happy interactions.
2️⃣ Let the Puppy Choose: Respect their pace and comfort level.
3️⃣ No Forcing: Avoid dragging or carrying them into situations.
4️⃣ Reinforce, Don’t Lure: Reward bravery and confidence, without conflict.
5️⃣ Avoid Trapping: Always give them an escape route.
6️⃣ End on a Good Note: Wrap up every session on a high.
✨ Starting young is key to raising a socially resilient dog—but remember, it’s never too late to nurture your pup’s confidence with thoughtful socialization!
👉 Swipe through to learn more about each rule and share this with a fellow puppy parent who needs to see it!
The earlier you start, the easier it is to shape how your puppy sees the world. 🌎 This isn't about exposing them to everything—it’s about helping them feel safe and curious in new environments.

Leo's Field Trip for Flowers
Today, it was Leo's turn to go on a field trip. Leo has been working hard on his enthusiasm around new people and in new places. A lot of his enthusiasm comes in the form of frenzied behavior and is nervous energy. That means that the goal isn't to suppress jumping, leash pulling, and all his energy. But the goal is to give him appropriate outlets that help him meet his needs, give him coping strategies, and build his confidence.
We have been focusing on quieter parks prior to today's session but thought we would try nudging him a bit out of his comfort zone today and visited Aubuchon with a flexible goal of helping him pick out some flowers for mom💕 He did it! 🥳🥳
Give it a watch!

My Why
If you are feeling overwhelmed, uninspired, lost, too busy, stuck, (fill in the blank), I get it. There are many things I know very little about and would feel stuck in knowing where to start, which would very likely keep me from getting started.
But look, here's the thing... When we live with dogs or kids (or both), they are always learning from us, whether we're ready or not. My hope for you is that I can offer you direction, a plan, and a jump-start in your dog's training and a feeling of relief in the overwhelm. With 10+ years in dog training and behavior experience, let my level of expertise be your guide and support in this area.
I'm a Certified Professional Dog Trainer, Behavior Consultant, Fear Free Certified, I hold a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, and an Associate's Degree in Animal Science. I work as a Veterinary Technician and offer Private in-home training for your dog, as well as online learning!
But that's what I offer, not who I am.
I started my business, Miss Behavior, in 2008 and I am constantly seeking and implementing ways to teach you how to better your life with your four-legged companion, whether through doing much of the training for you, offering online options, or listening to you and thinking beyond the box.
If you struggle with the day to day understanding of your dog and need to find ways to make life and dog-loving peacefully coexist so your relationship can blossom, I just might be the one to help! And if I can't, I'm certainly not above helping you find someone who can!
