📣 ANNOUNCEMENT! 📣

Hey guys, as you may have noticed, this page has been slow for quite a bit. SAR has blossomed into an amazing service that provides help for many rescues and bunnies around the globe! We have been able to establish a service that meets the needs of other species as well. So, most of our energy has been going into that!

With all of our work, I’ve had to really decide how to split my time, and I’m dedicating most of it to our Empowered Animals Behavior and Training, LLC pages! Unfortunately, I’m just not currently having the time to split between multiple accounts, so I wanted to encourage you all to seek out our content on that page!

My hope is to eventually be able to manage my time better to dedicate more time to this page specifically, but I wanted everyone to know that our content has really just moved to another page!

Please follow us at Empowered Animals Behavior and Training, LLC (Here and IG!) for and all of our other content!

We’ve currently got our annual enrichment-palooza going on, and we’ll be capping off the event with our updated Enrichment Guide for Small Animals!! You don’t want to miss it, so make sure to give us a follow!!

This page isn’t going away, we’re just migrating until I can find some more time!! ❤️

Happy everybun! Pain management is CRUCIAL when your bunny is in stasis, and a vibrating massage pad can help bust up gas bubbles in the GI tract, providing your bun with some relief.

Vibrations can be a little scary for a bunny, so after you find one of these (search eBay), it’s time to teach your bunny to feel comfortable while on one!

Want training help? We offer private sessions for really specific behavior training like this. Reach out to us at bunnytrainer.com!

We hope everyone has fared okay after Hurricane Ian! Unfortunately, we know that our friends at Southwest Florida House Rabbit Rescue are in desperate need for fosters and supplies. The best way to help is by sending donations rather than physical goods, as there is not really a way to get these things to them, and they will need the donations to get their power and facilities back up and running. If you are able, please, please consider donating to help them out!

It’s !! Today’s tip is that the same behavior can have multiple meanings. Here are some examples we often hear from our clients:

“My dog’s tail was wagging, so I know he was happy.”

“My bunny runs away when I go to pick her up, but she’s fine once I have her.”

These are both behaviors that have double meanings, so they require a closer look!

🐕 A wagging tail has MANY meanings! Left-biased tail wags indicate nervousness. Slow wags can also indicate uncertainty. Rapid wags can be happiness or appeasement (afraid of something). But the wag itself doesn’t tell the whole story! It’s important to look at the whole picture: Eyes, body position, ears, head, paws, mouth! Looking at each piece and understanding the whole tells what the dog is feeling.

🐰 Often, bunnies who “calm” once they are held are in a state we call “global suppression of behavior,” which is a fancy way of saying “learned helplessness.” An animal in this state feels that whatever they try isn’t working to get the result they want, so they give up. It is the opposite of calm: it is shut down. Looking at the whole picture tells the story: ears, eyes, whiskers, breathing rate, body position, head position, and, perhaps most importantly in this case, what the rabbit does when they have the ability to leave. Do they choose to go, or to come back?

I thought this graphic was a perfect way to illustrate this concept! We humans do this behavior all the times ourselves!

Does your animal ever behave in a way that seems confusing?

Happy ! We had so much fun during our webinar last night! We discussed the journey of Luna, a rescued rabbit who was going to be euthanized for aggression, and how we used compassion, solid behavior science, and lots of love to help her find her forever family!

We view "aggression" cases as "stress reduction" cases. Animals displaying "aggressive" behavior, are just seriously stressed out! When we change our goal from "don't bite" or "don't lunge" to "Let me figure out why you are so upset," we make progress.

Think you have a bunny who might benefit from stress reduction techniques? We'd love to help you!! Learn more about our bunny training here, and let us know how we can help you and your bun!!

Happy ! It’s your last chance to register for our upcoming webinar on rabbit aggression!

Meet Luna, a bunny slated to be euthanized by the local shelter due to her aggressive behavior. She was blindingly fast, and would leap at anything that entered her enclosure at feeding time, growling, lunging, and boxing. As soon as anyone would enter the room, she’d immediately begin getting amped up, pacing the fence line, ears pinned.

Focusing on Luna’s stress level was the whole key to cracking this case! Join us as we discuss this unique case, tomorrow night at 6:30 pm EST! Register here: https://www.petprofessionalguild.com/event-4793641

Happy ! Today’s tip is for people who have fearful or aggressive bunnies. We meet many clients with these challenges, and we empathize big time with you! It can be really upsetting to open your home to a bunny who displays these behaviors, especially when they seem to center around your interactions with them, such as petting, feeding, and cleaning. We understand, and, while there are no quick fixes, we have a single tip that can DRAMATICALLY change things within a short period of time. That tip is: hands off! 🖐

The more a rabbit does aggressive behaviors, the more likely they are to keep doing them. That’s because aggression is reinforcing in and of itself. The single most crucial part of our “Prevent-Teach-Reinforce” training approach is the prevention piece. Why? Because once the behavior stops occurring, the bunny begins to calm down. The longer they are calm, the better equipped they are to handle their stressors. This allows us to teach skills and implement strategies that teach them different responses and emotions to their stressors. These stressors can be your hands, things moving in their pen, their food bowl being lowered, or even your approach to the pen. Our first step in working with these cases is to come up with creative solutions to prevent these behaviors from occurring so the “stress decompression” can begin!

This is potentially a very valuable study! This could really add some peace of mind to people who struggle with stress-related GI stasis, bunnies who need to travel, and bunnies who struggle with vet visits.

A research study indicates that gabapentin can be a helpful tool to keep anxiety at bay when you have to take your rabbit to the vet.

For Tula’s Gotcha Day, I decided to skip the giant castles and toys (partly because we have no room left!) and go for something a little different! We got this awesome forage box from Buns Hop Shop on Etsy, and she LOVED it! The bun safe toys were packed with hay and dried herbs, creating a great forage activity!

10/10, would highly recommend!!

I’ve been wanting to get a bigger snuffle mat for Tula for a while, and happened to come across this whole shopping! It was perfect, cheap, and came in pink!! 👚

The moral of the story is, no matter where you are or why you’re there, always be shopping for your bunny! 🐇 🛍 😂

It’s ! Today’s tip is that training is GOOD for bunnies! Rabbits and other small pets are often not equated with needing lots of mental stimulation, but this is simply untrue. It’s important to know what mental stimulation actually is.

Mental stimulation is really a catch-all term for a lot of things. It’s a term we use to quantify behavioral needs, natural behavioral expression, enrichment, and even emotional needs. ALL animals require mental stimulation. They need to have the opportunity to practice behavior, to DO THINGS in their environment, to be happy and fulfilled. Animals need to be able to express themselves in order to be happy. Much of small mammal husbandry has moved in this direction. We recommend bigger enclosures (or none at all) instead of tanks and cages. We feed fresh foods and hay-based diets instead of concentrates. We neuter and vet the animals instead of letting them rot in a hutch outside. We see them as family members rather than toys. Meeting their behavioral and mental needs is the next frontier.

I had not done a training session with Tula for over a week due to being quarantined with Covid. I’d pop out and feed her and clean her pen and that was it. This was right after I did the first training session since being sick. I had to trim the video so it wouldn’t be too long! This is why I consider clicker training to be the ultimate way to bond with your pet. They just absolutely love it!

28/06/2022

It’s ! Today’s tip is to play by the rules you set! Often, when our pets jump ahead in our training plans to a next step, we start holding them to that criteria. That can lead to frustration because the rules suddenly change! What ends up happening is that the animal loses motivation because they 1) don’t get reinforced for what you just accepted and 2) they may not be ready for the next step, so they have decreased success.

Here’s an example of a situation where we might be tempted to bump criteria, and the better way to handle it. I’m working with Tula in this video on ring toss. Ultimately, I want her to place the ring over the cone, but we’ve been working on her picking up the ring and moving it to her right. A few times here, she has successfully placed the ring on the cone-yay!! I could be tempted to only click and treat those responses where the ring ends up on the cone now, but that would be a sudden rule change. So, I give more treats for those extra good responses, but continue to reward what I was accepting before as well! This keeps Tula’s motivation up, which I’ll need if I want her to keep trying to get that ring on the cone!

Happy ! The is the ultimate puzzle toy: the food and the toy are connected only by wireless technology, so your pet REALLY has to think to understand the link between the two. Let me tell you a secret though: Tula didn’t have to learn this on her own. I helped, and it wasn’t hard. Did you know that you can teach your pet “how to enrichment?”

So many great toys are on the market for small pets, but I am ALWAYS flooded with comments from people disheartened because their pet “just doesn’t like toys.” Tula is a curious and smart little cookie, but I know what’s it like to have a bunny who won’t even look at a toy you give them!

My previous bunny Hemingway was one of those guys. I gave him a TON of toys and he wouldn’t give them a second glance. Then one day, I heard a tiny bell. I looked outside to see him RINGING THE BELL. He was playing, and I was stoked! It didn’t happen through osmosis, though: I taught him how to play.

You can teach your bunny to play, too! Check out our “Teaching Food Puzzles” webinar this Thursday at 6:30 pm EST. Registration is $25, with a portion going to Rabbit Care and Adoptions. Email or DM us to sign up!! (Yes, recordings are available!!)

I am fundamentally against feeding dogs from the table. A begging dog is honestly super annoying.

BUT I will share my breakfast with Tules any chance I get! 🍌 🐰

Who else likes to share their food with bunnies? (I’m a total sucker for wheeking guinea pigs too! 🙈)

*Just in case anyone thinks it’s harsh-I totally use “people food” to train dogs…just not to beg at the table! 🐶 *

Happy ! Did you know that Tula used to not dig in her forage? She used her nose to shove things, and would chew things with her teeth, but it wasn’t until we did some training that she started trying to use digging to uncover treats! Sometimes, even natural behavior doesn’t come naturally!

Learn about how you can encourage your bunny to practice natural behavior in our “Teaching Food Puzzles” webinar! We’ll
be giving this webinar Thursday, 6/23, at 6:30 pm EST! (Recordings will be available to registrants!). Our webinar is $25, with a portion being donated to Orlando Rabbit Care & Adoptions! Click here to register: https://empoweredanimalsbehaviorandtraining.com/contact-us

"Teaching Food Puzzles" is a webinar that walks you step-by-step through the process of getting your bunny interested in playing with toys! Disinterest in toys is not permanent-you can TEACH your pet to play with toys, and encourage them to interact with the world around them! Our live webinar will be offered this Thursday, 6/23 at 6:30 pm EST.

Recordings will be available to registrants, so if you can't make the live event, no worries-we'll send all registrants the recording!

It’s ! Today’s tip is about teaching tricks! When it comes to trick training, finding the right prop is about 50% of teaching the trick!!

I’ve been looking for the right-sized ring toss set for Tula for a few years now, and I recently found a set I thought would work. After playing with it for a few sessions, I felt like I the cone was just too tall for her. So, I went out and found a smaller cone to help her out!

Now that she is easily able to put the ring on the cone, her rate of success is higher! That means I can reward her for those successes, and increase their chances of occurring again.

Happy !! I had a really fun experience yesterday that I wanted to share with you guys.

I tagged along for the finalization of an adoption of a rescue dog. I was asked to come because the owners wanted help with some unwanted behaviors from their new dog. The dog, a delightful mixed breed, greeted me with exuberant jumps straight at my face and pawing at my clothes. This is super common behavior when a dog wants attention from an exciting new person! I began to give attention only when all 4 feet were on the ground. The dog, super excited by any attention, tried a variety of behaviors to get me to get excited with her! She jumped, she pawed, she licked, she wiggled, and she desperately tried to make eye contact with me. I indulged any of those behaviors where all 4 feet were planted on the ground! Eventually, she offered a sit-YES!! I bent down, talked, and stroked her chest, and had to pull back when she got over excited and jumped again. I pulled back, and she quickly offered another sit. I immediately obliged. Rapidly, she learned that sit = attention, and began to offer it any time she approached me. Then she began to offer it to other people in the room, as she interacted them. By now, she was able to communicate specifically what she wanted from them: please pet me! With repetition, she will quickly become extraordinarily polite, and I congratulated the new owners on an incredibly smart new family member!!

Behavior always has a function, and figuring out how the behavior serves the animal can provide the key to changing it. In this dog’s case, she quickly learned that sitting was sure fire way to gain the attention she was seeking by jumping up. Jumping up was no longer effective, so it reduced. There were no tools involved in this training session: just observation, empathy, and choices!

I didn’t take any video of this, so here is an unrelated, but very adorable video of Tula learning how to play ring toss 😊❤️

22/05/2022

Happy ! Tula just started learning this trick a few days ago and is already a master!

Just kidding-this was a one-time instance! We are still taking it slow while teaching her the right techniques for getting that ring on the cone!!

What are you and your pets doing today?

17/05/2022

It’s ! Todays tip might surprise you: tips don’t solve problems.

“My dog hates other dogs-any tips on helping him get over that?”

“My rabbit hates having her nails done-any tips?”

“My pig freaks out when strangers come over-any tips of getting him to like strangers?”

We get asked all the time for tips-and we love to give them (that’s why we have a weekly “tip” post!). The reality is, though, that if all that it took to solve a behavior issue were a few “tips,” then the problem would have been solved a long time ago!! Tips are a great place to get started, though, and that’s where we usually can get a good conversation started to help begin the process of solving a behavior problem. The process, though, is just that! It takes work, dedication, and patience to get desired results, and it’s always worth it!

15/05/2022

It’s !! We wanted to feature one our incredible students working on their newest trick! Sahra and Sprocket are working on their Expert Trick title, and this is the “cover your eyes” trick!

Sahra trained this using capturing, technique where you try watch for the desired behavior and reinforce it as it naturally occurs. Over time, the desired behavior increases in frequency, and then you are able to add a cue to it!

Interested in trick training? Check out our Spark Team!!

Happy !! Today’s tip is inspired by one of our amazing clients, who happens to have a deaf bunny. How do we clicker train a deaf animal? Well, it’s actually not too different from training an animal that can hear!

Clicker training really just means “marker” training. A clicker is a type of marker. Markers help tell the animal they did the right behavior, and that a treat is coming. We can use all different types of markers, from clickers to whistles to flashlights to “hand flashes.” We landed on this “hand flash” bridge after reading the amazing Terrie Hayward’s “A Deaf Dog Joins the Family.” I first grabbed this book after I had a client with a deaf dog, and adapted the strategies here for a bunny.

To help your bunny understand that hand flash = treats, you pair the flash with a treat, as demonstrated here. Don’t worry if your bunny isn’t quite looking at your hand: they have excellent peripheral vision. By keeping your “flashing” hand in the same place, your bunny will pick up on the movement and, through practice, that movement will gain significance to them.

Does anyone here have a pet with hearing challenges?

Our Story

Small Animal Resources is a dedicated resource for those who want the best for their small pets! Our focus is on training and behavior, but enrichment and general husbandry are also regularly featured. Pocket pets are often marketed as “easy-to-keep” starter pets, but anyone who has shared their hopes with one has quickly realized that these small prey animals don’t come as the cuddly pals they are often portrayed as. That’s where we come in! Our goal is to show you how to understand your pet to help you become friends. We will guide you using positive reinforcement training to help you accomplish whatever your goal is!
