Media beds (MB) are a container filled with substrate (19mm gravel in this case). They are flooded periodically with water from the fish tanks. Water then drains from the MB to a sump/fish tank/DWC. When the MB drains, it draws oxygen into the substrate for plant roots and nitrifying bacteria 🤩
Media beds are mainly used to grow fruiting plants as they are able to provide an excellent foothold for stability. In small systems MB can serve as both a solids and biological filtration.

In Aquaponics, the fish have to live somewhere and the easiest way to manage them are in tanks, hence ➡️ fish tanks 🤪
‼️ It is crucial for the health of the fish to have a constant flow of fresh water and air ‼️
The flow rate of water replenishes the tank volume every 1-2 hours. The water inlet is used to create directional flow inside the tank. This helps to prevent dead zone, especially in round tanks. This circular flow of water assists in solids removal from the fish tank 👏🏽👏🏽

Newly transplanted lettuce seedlings into the DWC (Deep Water Culture) 🤩
In 28 days time they will be ready for harvest. As you can see in the picture, last week seedlings have grown up quite nicely already.
These rafts float on the water with the plant roots dangling freely in the water, which is constantly aerated so the plant roots can breath 🌱🫁🌬

Our lettuce and spring onion keep growing everyday thanks of the nutrients that our fish provide for the whole system.
In aquaponics we can easily see how fast crops like these can thrive in compare with soil grown crops.
Aquaponics systems are up to 95% more water efficient and 10 times more productive than soil farms, when taking up significantly LESS space 🤯
‼️ Did you know that in aquaponics a fully grown lettuce is harvested after 28 days? 🥬
