Friends, itâs been awful cold down on the farm as of late. Went out to the chicken barn to check on the hubby. He was outside and hadn't been inside for a while.
He said, "Got that chicken hawk that has been getting my chickens! He got tangled up in that netting that I had stretched over the chicken pen."
He asked, "Will you help me skin and dress it?" "Yes." and we proceeded to pluck the chicken hawk!
Now I stood it as long as I could? "What the heck you gonna do with this hawk after we dress it?"
He said , "Iâm going to cook it! And give it to Jim! He has been sorta sickly lately, thought some chicken soup might help him to feel better?"
"But honey, this ainât a chicken? Itâs a chicken hawk!"
He said. "OK What do they eat?"
Course I said "mostly chicken!"
He said, "Yes and a lot of mine lately!"
He put the chicken hawk in the crock pot and was adding all kinds of stuff.
I just had to ask. "Can Jim not tell that this ainât chicken?"
He laughed and said, "Well he didnât say nothing last week when he ate that Hoot Owl!"

Been seeing all these posts about how if you happen to see an animal outside in the cold, and they're in a pen, or tied up, or whatnot, that you are supposed to bring 'em inside and warm 'em up. So...

âFarm work doesnât make you stronger. It doesnât make you anything. It reveals you.
Thereâs gym strong and then thereâs farm strong. Theyâre mutually exclusive.
The toughest women youâll ever meet spend their days on a farm.
There are more uses for twine than you can possibly imagine. You can tie up a hole in a slow feeder, fashion a tail strap for a horseâs blanket, mend a broken fence and use it as a belt.
âWell that certainly didnât go as planned,â is one thing youâll say quite a bit.
Control is a mere illusion. The thought that you have any, at any given time, is utterly false.
Sometimes sleep is a luxury. So are lunch and dinner. And brushing your hair.
If youâve never felt your obliques contract, then youâve never tried stopping an overly full wheelbarrow of horse manure from tipping over sideways. Trust me, youâll find muscles that you never knew existed on the human skeleton to prevent this from happening.
When one of the animals is ill, youâll go to heroic lengths to minimize their discomfort.
When you lose one of them, even though you know that day is inevitable, you still feel sadness, angst and emotional pain from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. And itâs a heaviness that lingers even though you must regroup and press on.
Youâll cry a lot. But youâll never live more fully. Youâll remain present no matter what because you must. There is no other option.
Youâll ask for so many miracles and hold out hope until the very last.
You will, at least once, face-plant in the manure pile.
Youâll find yourself saying things like, âwe have maybe twenty minutes of daylight left to git âer doneâ whilst gazing up at a nonspecific place in the sky.
Youâll become weirdly obsessive about the weather.
Youâll go out in public wearing filthy clothes and smelling of dirt, sweat and p**p. People will look at you sideways and krinkle their noses but you wonât care.
Your entire day can derail within ten seconds of the rising sun.
You can wash your coveralls. They wonât look any cleaner, but they will smell much nicer.
Farm work is difficult in its simplicity.
Youâll always notice just how beautiful sunrises and sunsets really are.
Should you ever have the opportunity to work on a farm, take the chance! You will never do anything more satisfying in your entire life.
Well, that about sums it up, folks!â - unknown author

Food labeling is confusing. But do not be deceived!
When orange juice says it's non-GMO, please recognize that all oranges are non-GMO. The only potential GMO products in the USA are papaya, corn, alfalfa, soybeans, cotton, potatoes, squash, canola, sugar beets, and apples.
When organic milk is labeled antibiotic free, remember that all dairy products, including milk, are always antibiotic free. Same applies to meat.
Those bananas advertised as cholesterol free? That's because all bananas are cholesterol free.
When a jar of peanuts says it is made in a plant that processes peanuts just use your common sense and roll your eyes.
When a bag of apples says it is gluten free, remember that gluten comes from wheat.
When you see a Facebook post that talks about hormones in beef, please understand that an 8oz serving of beef has 2-3 nanograms of estrogen, an 8 oz serving of white bread has 136,080 nanograms of estrogen, and 8 ounces of soy flour has 342,468,000 nanograms of estrogen. All living things produce estrogen, it's just science.
When that carton of eggs says that they came from vegetarian fed chickens, don't forget that chickens are naturally omnivores.
So yes, eat healthy, but don't be swayed by deceptive advertising. Be informed.
No farms, no food. Know your farmers, know your food.

It's that time of year again - when people yell at strangers on the internet about proper pumpkin care and wildlife health. đ
Thereâs a lot of misinformation out there, so your favorite wildlife nerds at USFWS are sharing a friendly PSA below with key facts and considerations this spooky szn.
⨠Remember: Critters will likely eat (or at least nibble on!) your carved jack-oâ-lanterns. Squirrels, raccoons, deer, moose, foxes, mice and insects might feast on the delicious orange porch snack you leave near your front door. âHow nice of you!â they probably think as they eat their weight in slimy pumpkin goodness.
⨠Painted pumpkins can make for an easier way to create a fun or creepy jack-o'-lantern. However, a painted pumpkin can potentially be toxic to wildlife if they eat it. If you choose to paint your pumpkin, please keep it indoors and away from any critters who might feast on its painted flesh. You can also explore nontoxic paint options made with natural ingredients when possible.
⨠In recent years, social media users have posted various âtricksâ to keep a carved pumpkin from rotting so quickly. Keep in mind that letting nature take its course is always an option. Carved pumpkins are eventually going to decompose one way or another. Always follow the directions of any product youâre applying to a pumpkin for your safety and othersâ (including wildlife!).

Jimmy the Donkey was born in the trenches at the Somme, when a Germany shell fatally wounded his pregnant mother. British soldiers were forced to deliver Jimmy in the mud of the battlefield.
The baby donkey was raised by the troops of the Cameronian Scottish Rifles who fed him condensed milk and rations. They even taught the animal to salute by raising one hoof.
Jimmy would spend the years with the regiment, hauling supplies and keeping his human comradesâ spirits up.
He was wounded three times before the end of the war, but went on to become a mascot of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in the 20s and 30s.
He died in 1943 and was buried in Peterboroughâs Central Park. A monument was erected to commemorate him.
