Just in case you were wondering what your body worker is looking or feeling for when we palpate, poke or use our fingertips.

I have had clients tell me, that I sometimes look like I’m not doing much!

The horse responds to much subtler ministrations than we might expect.

Long lever force is rarely necessary to assist in the releasing of muscle and fascia. As you can see, there is a lot more than most people would imagine under the skin.

Veins, arteries, nerves and layers of muscle.

When we appear that we aren’t doing much, this is part of what we are doing. In addition, we are also watching the horses reaction and for subtle indicators of pain or discomfort.

I’m also feeling for knots, scar tissue or adhesions.

This is just a part of the foreleg and neck of the horse.

The subtleties of the equine body never ceases to amaze me.

"In a future world, it is extremely important for the sustainability of horse sports to think about the horse's welfare and to move away from an anthropocentric view, to a horse-centred view: welfare from the horse's own perspective.

The advent of social media, smart phones with high resolution videos and the ongoing pursuit of personal freedoms means that it is extremely important that horse people earn the trust of the public.

Too often it appears that even at the highest levels, horse people and federations believe that all they need to do is to convince the public that what they do is justified, kind and legitimate and they see what is known as social license to operate' as something to protect. This is a complete misunderstanding.

On the contrary, social license is the trust owed to the public and it must be earned."

The FEI Board has unanimously approved an Equine Welfare Strategy Action Plan and established a dedicated Equine Welfare Fund of CHF 1 million (USD 1’119’000; EUR 1’030’000) to launch the plan.

The decision was taken during the Board’s in-person meeting at the FEI Headquarters in Lausanne (SUI) on 4 and 5 June 2024.

The Action Plan is based on the recommendations outlined in the Final Report of the Equine Ethics and Wellbeing Commission (which is linked in the article below).
