Easter is in 48 days and we’re beginning to see impulse purchases, breeders overbreeding to produce enough bunnies in time, and dumpings. We have already had a local pet store chain ask to purchase our rescue bunnies to sell for the holiday. This offer was obviously declined - but appalling nonetheless. It will only get worse as we get closer to Easter Sunday.
People buy rabbits on a whim as a fun and cuddly pet. Bunnies are a symbol of easter so this “starter” pet is a great gift. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. Bunnies are not starter pets - they’re exotic animals. They’re not typically cuddly and require lots of care. Pet stores, farm stores, and breeders don’t screen potential adopters and don’t provide adequate information on rabbit care. People don’t realize that rabbits live for 8-12 years either, so are not ready for this long of a commitment.
Easter bunnies are often sold for $10-$15 a pop to literally whoever - which means they almost always wind up in poorly situations with owners who have not been properly educated. They suffer in small outdoor hutches, indoor (small) pet store cages, with dangerous diets, minimal to no proper enrichment, and more. If you know anyone who is thinking about getting a bunny for Easter, please have them reach out to us no matter where in the world they live.
We would be more than happy to help anyone considering an Easter rabbit by offering our free (and virtual) rabbit crash course. In addition to this, we can also assist anyone in finding a local and responsible rescue to adopt a bunny at instead of directly from a breeder or store.
Please be responsible. Rabbits are NOT gifts. We share this every year and hope it reaches the right people.
