IF anyone is interested: Crossroads Canine is looking for one or two more teams for a weeknight 5:00 pm Competition Obedience Beginner Novice/Novice group class.

The groups are 3-5 dogs
and each class lasts one hour. The cost is $100 for four weeks and will be ongoing as long as the teams continue coming.

Puppies and dogs need to have CGC level skills and be able to work around other dogs. Handlers new to the sport are welcome!

This class is held at our climate controlled and fully matted training building near Posey Crossroads which is about 10 minutes north of downtown Prattville.

The focus of this class is to teach marker training and heeling along with the other Novice exercises in a fun positive atmosphere. This is reinforcement based marker training and harsh corrections are not used.

Private lessons are also available.

For more information contact Becky Walker Jones via Facebook messenger, by text at 334-580-0054 or check out our page: Crossroads Canine.

We had so much FUN at River Region Kennel Club! Thank you to Judge Terri Rein for pointing to my boy for Best In Show on Sunday! Dunder also got a Group 4 on Saturday and went on to earn a Total Dog award each day. He began and then earned his ROM Title and his UCD Title! He ran 4 Precision Courses at the Master Level so he only needs one more run to Title RACEM. We had a GREAT weekend and I'm so proud of my bred-by boy!!

So, i just want to say that I had no idea how comfortable, relaxing, and inviting UKC truly is. I experience (a few minutes of) my first UKC show this weekend in Alabama. It was not at all what I imagined, so much better. So excited to step foot in the ring, though wow at the amazing competition. I seen some gorgeous and well mannered dogs. SO lovely!

Announcement: Please see post below. If you accidently picked up this leash, please return it. If it was taken on purpose, shame on you. Please return to the rightful owner.

From Tina Clanin Weaver:
Thank You River Region Kennel Club for holding a nice show this weekend in Alabama! We enjoyed meeting many new people! Unfortunately I left my brand new, 6 foot hot pink leash hanging in the women’s restroom on the back of a bathroom stall door around 6:45-7:15pm, during the last of the herding group. Someone picked it up, I went back within 5 minutes and it was gone. I just bought the leash from a vendor at this show and really like it. Please, if you found it return it to me. I will pay for shipping.

Proceed with Caution While Traveling & Staying at Hotels

After getting to the hotel, I was out walking dogs and this younger girl came running at me yelling, “Help, Help, Help!” At this point I took off as she then preceded to try to grab me… Read more: http://caninechronicle.com/?p=237777

Posted by a preservation breeder who is ALSO a Vet!! Here's the real deal, people:
Watching the Westminster coverage, I was struck by many things, but this remained the most prominent:
So many of these amazing breeds have critically low registrations. Just 600 Sussex Spaniels, to name one. Many of these are breeds that make amazing companion dogs, and the public knows nothing about them.
As a veterinarian, I average seeing about 3 "new puppies" per day (these can be existing or new clients, but new puppies to them), sometimes more, sometimes less. I would guess that about 3-4 of these each MONTH is a purebred dog. And maybe ONE is from a preservation breeder. The others are merle or off color "purebreds" or from mills.
The rest? Every sort of doodle you can imagine, or other mixes such as husky/gsd (no idea who is doing this, but please stop), pomsky, shipoo, havapoo, shichon, cavachon, the list goes on and on.
The sad part is that many of these owners are educated, smart people, who just truly don't know. They don't know about the amazing purebred dogs who would fit so much better in their home. They don't know that buying a purebred dog is buying predictability. They don't know about health testing or breed typical traits or breed typical health concerns. They know they want a puppy and they can go online and order one, and be fooled by photos and words. Some even say "when I got there I knew it was a mill, but I couldn't say no at that point."
We need to do better. We need to promote and educate and...go ahead and crucify me for this...breed more dogs. Stop vilifying breeders who actually breed. Because pretty soon, we are all going to be extinct and all that will be left is designer dogs.
When I can talk to someone BEFORE they get their puppy, I can make a difference. I can educate about breeds that may work for them, about health issues, and about finding the right breeder. But as the veterinarian, all I can do is sigh when I see yet another "cockadoodledont" on my schedule and educate after the fact about pet insurance and training and the things we can do to try to help that particular puppy.
I don't have the solution, but I do know that we have to do better.
