How do you feel the first day after you have made a big change to your routine or lifestyle? Do you feel like it’s easy to keep up with it? Do you feel overwhelmed? And then, what does the following week or month look like? Do you stay consistent? Does it feel easy everyday or do some days feel easier than others?

And the biggest question, how does this relate to separation anxiety training and behavior medication?

Slide to read more about my thoughts and reflections about it after observing dogs overcome SA over the years.

With love, Moira 💞

Yes, you can treat separation anxiety in dogs! In my part two podcast interview with Dr. Moira Hechenleitner, DVM, CSAT, of Separation Anxiety Dog, we talk about what that treatment looks like. It is an important listen for anyone who has a dog suffering from this.

In Episode 5 of my Lives Touched By Pets Podcast, you will learn, there IS hope!

What do predictability and variability mean in the context of dog training, dog behavior, and separation anxiety? And why are they important?

Predictability allows us to know what to expect. Its soothing nature grounds us, moving us from a state of alert to one of calmness.

Variability takes us out of our comfort zone. Its unexpected nature brings stress but allows us to grow stronger, and more adaptable.

Only by balancing both we can thrive. Separation Anxiety dogs are no different.

But how to choose the right amount of each? It will depend on each dog.

Aside from training, most will initially benefit from a good amount of predictability to feel safe, progressively sprinkled by variability to get stronger.

In SA training, it will vary from dog to dog and depending on the stage. There isn’t a perfect recipe for all!

From varying everything between sessions or repeating the same session everyday, to halfway in between, finding that sweet balance by objectively observing each dog’s response and trend will take you there. And will help the dog heal.

All dogs can tell time, but SA dogs who thrive from a more predictable setup really care about numbers and about what to expect when facing SA training!

Remi is one of them, so we have been successfully implementing a predictable training approach rather than the usual variable training schedule. We are now entering the stage in which we reverse back to variable so she gently adapts to not knowing what to expect in terms of each day’s absence duration and is able to be ok with it.

At this stage we are working with an absence duration baseline of 15 minutes that we repeat almost everyday with the exception of a “sprinkle up” of 25 minutes and a “sprinkle down” of 8 minutes once a week. Check in the picture the timing in which she made moves during this particular absence. 😅

This is so helpful and validating to see, because we can navigate any displaying of restlessness or discomfort happening at those times with a different mindset, and carefully push the edges of discomfort to help them grow within safe margins. This provides us with context so we can potentially allow mild expressions of discomfort (the good kind of discomfort, the one that helps us grow), as long as the day to day trend continues to move in the right direction, validating and supporting our decision making.

To be able to comfortably allow the above, it is key to have worked with the dog long enough to know that the foundation is solid, and that they are ready to safely handle being slightly pushed out of their comfort zone.

I think I’ll record a short video in the next few days to talk more about predictability versus variability, how they intertwine, and how they can be strategically applied to helping SA dogs through training.

Hey dog trainer peeps and dog lovers out there! I got to watch this beautiful short film from our colleage Kirsty Spencer (Kirsty’s Pet Clinic in the UK) and thought you might like it. I hope the message gets out there so the world continues to learn more about what’s the dog’s point of view when experiencing this world. Understanding them better can have such a positive impact in how people treat dogs, empathize with them and on how we can help them succeed when sharing their lives with us in this contemporary, sometimes crazy world. Check it out and spread the message if you can!

This subject can help anybody who might be having a hard times staying accountable, or finding the motivation to making training become a habit. It can actually help with anything you might want to embark on, not only SA training or dog related stuff. I hope you find it helpful and that it motivates you to give it a try, no matter the stage you are at into your journey. ❤️

This is a video of Murphy’s behavior when Mia, his hyper-attachment figure, goes for a run while he stays with his male guardian, Kevin (audio on to hear hin). Murphy is also the protagonist of the new Advanced Shadowing Program that’s about to start next Monday.

Maybe you know that last year I also created a Shadowing Program. The difference between them is that though there is no such a thing as a “straightforward case” because all cases are different and have their own challenges, there are many things that made the first one more suitable for beginners.

Kali (the protagonist of the first program) wasn’t experiencing other behavior challenges aside from his separation anxiety, and although he had a bit of a more challenging time with one of his guardians leaving, he was able to quickly adapt to this, allowing us to consider him as a separation anxiety case without hyper-attachment to a specific figure. He didn’t need any behavior medication support while going through the program, and his progress was consistent. He did of course experience challenges along the way (all dogs do!), but they were somewhat “transparent” and easy to connect to what we were doing, and to switch the strategy accordingly to help him succeed.

That’s why he was a great candidate for the program! It gave me the chance to share with you what the beginning of a SA training program looks like, and what are the basics in terms of strategy and flow.

If you are enjoying taking SA cases though (or if you are a dog guardian going through a protocol on your own), you will reach a point where you will wonder “and what happens next”? How do we take it from here? What do I do when it’s time ro fade up warmups, when all PDQs are incorporated, when durations get longer? How do I deal with regressions, inconsistencies, and various challenges that will happen along the way? This is why I created the Advanced Shadowing Program. This program will take you through a case that I have been working with for 14 months up to this date, and that has encountered most of the aspects mentioned above. This is a case where the dog also suffers from hyper-attachment to a specific figure, which hasn’t been easily addressed not even after one year of training, which is honestly not the usual I have experienced in the past. There are meds (and meds changes) involved, and other behavior challenges that have been navigated by other colleagues because you know: team work is key!

I’m hopeful that this program will answer most of the questions you might have at this point of your SA journey and will further help you with your own cases whether you are a dog pro or a dog guardian who is working with their own dog.

The program starts on Monday 14th and it will take you through four weeks of Murphy’s SA training. It will include meetings, an initial webinar to fill you in, and other resources so you can follow along!

There is lots of love and dedication put into creating this program! My goal is to keep creating valuable content and adding resources to educate about separation anxiety in dogs. I hope you enjoy it 🙂

Who is Murphy?

Murphy is a 2-yr old Miniature Poodle who suffers from separation anxiety with hyper-attachment to a specific figure.

Him and his family have been implementing a formal separation anxiety training protocol for a bit over a year. They have made great progress, but they have also encountered many bumps on the road along the way. Switching to a predictable approach, and now starting to switch back to a variable one, behavior meds, neutering, reactivity outside the house, building a support village while it continues to be a challenge for Murphy to separate from his hyper-attachment figure after one year of training.

And they are willing to share everything with you!

The ups and downs, the changes in strategy, the challenging parts and the successes. Everything that has happened during this past year, and what is happening now and during the next four weeks!

The Advanced Shadowing Program starts next week and there is a special discount for early birds. Learn more in link in comments 🐶

You will be able to see all the training twists and turns, the strategy choices along the way, the ups and downs, and so much more.

This program will help you expand your knowledge, and learn how to navigate a separation anxiety case on later stages of the journey, how to problem solve, and how to customize your training as the behaviors evolve based on each individual.

The program starts on Monday, November 14th at 10AM EST. And if you can't make it live don't worry! You will have access to the recordings and materials for one year after the purchase date.

Access the EARLY BIRD PRICE by purchasing this course until Sunday, November 13th and pay only $99.90 USD ($119 USD after).

What is the Do-It-Yourself Program and why is it part of the “Ultimate Separation Anxiety Dog Bundle”?

That’s a great question! The Do-It-Yourself Program is an extensive self-paced course that allows both dog pros and dog guardians to learn the step by step of assessing separation anxiety and implementing a successful training program.

It thoroughly navigates each stage of the process, providing details on how, when, and why to take each step depending on every dog's needs. It also includes training layouts, and case examples to give you the foundational knowledge needed to succeed in separation anxiety cases.

And why a Bundle?

The Ultimate Separation Anxiety Dog Bundle gives you access not only to the DO-IT-YOURSELF SEPARATION ANXIETY PROGRAM but also to the FULL SEPARATION ANXIETY PROGRAM and SIX SEPARATION ANXIETY RELATED WEBINARS.

Like learning both the theory and the practical aspects of any new skill, this will provide you not only with the foundational knowledge that you need to succeed, but also with a practical view of how the decision making process works. Understanding separation anxiety from all fronts will be a game changer when implementing your training plan.

This unique opportunity will be available for only $325 USD (total real value $803 USD) for LIMITED TIME ONLY.

The bundle will be available for purchases on Monday, September 26th, and until Sunday, October 9th.

Meet Muenster. 🐶

He is a 4-yr-old Italian Spinone.

He likes to make funny faces because he knows they make people smile.

He has a cat who also calls like cheese! 😬

He helps kids to read, and puppies to feel more confident around other dogs.

He suffers from separation anxiety, and we have been working together with his guardian for two years.

We have encountered many challenges along the way, “being a professional in anticipating” and having inconsistent progress some of them.

Making our SA training protocol more predictable has helped us gain consistency and steadily progress from 3min to 50min absences.

Tomorrow we will be discussing Muenster’s case and how a more predictable approach can help some dogs thrive.

Today Betty did a thing. A wonderful thing! After a year working together and navigating various challenges and inconsistencies, Betty was able to stay alone and relaxed for 30 minutes while Liz, her guardian enjoyed a coffee at a coffee shop nearby for the first time ever!

The thing is that Betty is what a like to call “a mathematician”. She counts steps, and measures time (I believe all dogs do, but many are able to quickly adapt to the variations). For some dogs though, like in Betty’s case, measuring time is a big deal, and not knowing what to expect can make them really uncomfortable. This smart girl also learned pretty fast that if she got up earlier, her guardian would be back earlier and earlier each day.

This is one of the cases where a more predictable (or “unconventional”) approach as a nuance of the CSAT separation anxiety protocol has successfully provided us with consistency and has allowed us to address the getting up, and the counting. Thanks to this approach (and the right meds and doses) we were able to go from 5min absences that could potentially be inconsistent without any evident reasons, to today’s 30min absence, and consistent relaxation on an everyday basis.

During next week webinar I’ll be sharing more about this approach, its benefits, and when it could be a helpful tool to add to your SA toolbox. During the webinar I’ll be sharing another case, Muenster’s, who has made great progress using this same approach, and who was the first case that I successfully navigated this way. Muenster was the inspiration behind the creation of the terms “sprinkle up” and “sprinkle down” and I’ll be forever grateful for how much him and his guardian have taught me during this 2-year long SA journey.

Early bird ends soon! More info about the webinar in link in comments.

10/06/2022

When working with SA dogs you find that most cases prompt you to get creative. Tweaking things here and there when something didn’t work or proved to be too challenging for the dog. Providing support through medication, and discovering what’s the environment that allows the dog to thrive are some of the factors that we start paying attention to when a SA dog is struggling, or when we are dealing with inconsistent results.

Two years ago I found myself one more time in that situation. I actually scrolled down through my own feed to find a post about Muenster from two years ago. Muenster and his guardian were struggling on different fronts, and we made sure to target them all at the best of our ability. It was a long journey but we were able to address his health, behavior medication, environment, and it helped, lots! However, we continued struggling with inconsistencies.

Then is when I remembered an amazing suggestion Malena once gave me about a case. She said “some dogs thrive from predictability more than flexibility”. That made me think about how dogs, the same as us humans, benefit from a fine balance between predictability and flexibility, and how, for some of us, knowing what to expect and every detail of it helps us navigate life better. For example, when someone has to take a blood sample from me I like to see everything they are doing. I like to know when they will stick the needle in my skin, how long it’s going to take, and I want to watch it happening. Every second of it. It makes me feel in control and successfully manage my anxiety levels. Other people though might benefit from not looking and not knowing, just be done with it fast!

Why would SA dogs be different? This webinar is the journey of Muenster and his guardian, and how a more predictable approach, within the frame of CSAT training sessions can help some dogs thrive. And how much it has also helped other dogs with similar challenges ever since.

This webinar will be live on Wednesday, June 22nd at 2pm EST and the recording will be available for a year after the purchase. EARLY BIRD PRICING AVAILABLE!

We will have a live Q&A segment too. It is advisable to be familiar with the CSAt approach to SA before taking this webinar.
