Good Morning Folks!

Hope everyone is having a fantastic summer! It is looking to be another beautiful, sunny day here in St. John's.

For those of you who might be off of work today, I'd like you to take a moment to meet our Junior that will be representing the province at the National in British Columbia. Alyssa Butt (better known as Ally) earned herself the spot to represent NL at the regional competition back in April.

Ally is a bright 17 year old girl, who has been a lover of dogs her entire life. I have had the privilege of watching her grow from the sidelines. Yes, she grew taller in height, but she also grew tremendously in the sport of Junior Handling. I remember meeting Ally when she was around 10 years old. She was a quiet, young girl, who barely spoke. Through the sport of Junior Handling, her confidence started to grow. Now at the age of 17, she is a mature, intelligent, confident woman who walks into the ring with great poise. Over the course of the past couple of years, Ally has been instructioning Junior Handling classes. In addition to teaching, she is active in her community. There isn't much this young lady can't do.

In September, she will be moving to PEI to commence her post secondary career. Ally was accepted into the pre-veterinary program at UPEI. She hopes to one day pursue a career in both small and large animal veterinary medicine. She adores all animals and hopes to be able to heal many through her work.

Before she heads off into the world of endless hours of studying, she will be traveling out west. As I know everyone can appreciate, traveling and staying in BC will be quite costly. Through the assistance of the Junior Zone Rep (Pamela Skanes), they have been working hard to fundraise the monies required. I know many of you have been supporting the various fundraisers over the past year and that support is truly appreciated. If you never got the chance to take part, you can still send along an e-transfer to help offset the cost. If you would like to make a donation, then simply reach out to either myself, Pamela Skanes or Ally's mom: Crystal Lyons.

Oh, I should add that Ally and her mother were not aware that I was making this post :) . Hence, I had to be a ninja and go in and steal a few pictures from her Facebook. Let's hope I picked a couple of good ones

Please join me in wishing Ally the best of luck at Nationals. The winner of Nationals will travel to Crufts. I already told her mother that if Ally goes to Crufts, then I'm tagging along. Lol

Thanks for reading!
And Happy Regetta Day to All.

Seeking some good paws to help out with the upcoming NKC Agility Trials taking place:
Friday, July 19th - Sunday, July 21st!

The best way to learn.about the sport of agility is to volunteer and check out the action up close.

So far we have a handful of folks. Special thanks to Susan Copp for kindly offering to be our Gate Steward all weekend! And a tremendous thank you to Terry Parrell for offering up his time and expertise to be Course Master all weekend.

Here are some basic job descriptions for the most common volunteer positions at an agility trial. If you are new to volunteering at an agility trial, it is recommended that you begin with ring crew.

Ring Crew
You will be responsible for jump setting and adjusting the A-frame. Jump setting includes replacing fallen bars and changing jump heights on all jumps: bar jumps, spreads, doubles, and the tire

Leash Runner
You will be responsible for taking the leash at the start line and placing it in a designated area at the finish line. This area may be in a container, or hanging from a designated holder, as determined by the host club.

Scribe Sheet Runner
You are responsible for taking the scribe sheets from the Scribe person in the ring, and hand them to the trial secretary

Scribe
You will be responsible for recording all faults signaled by the judge during each run and either recording the time given by the timer, or handing the sheet to the scribe assistant to have him/her do this task.
You must concentrate only on the judge and not watch what the dog and handler are doing.
You are also responsible for getting the scribe sheets for the event and confirming the running order with the gate steward prior to the start of each class.

Timer
You will be responsible for timing the length of each run and reporting it to the scribe. This person will also time the walk through for each event and blow the whistle at a pre-determined time to signal that the course is closed for walking.
During events such as Gamblers and Snooker the timer keeps track of sequence times and blows the whistle at the appropriate time.

Gate Steward
You will be responsible for keeping things moving by making sure the competitors are at the line ready to go when it’s their turn.
You are also responsible for announcing height and course changes loud enough for all to hear - so the ring crew can hear you.

Course Builder
You will work under the direction of the master course builder and the judge to build the course. You will be responsible to move equipment on and off the course to the locations indicated. You will help assemble and disassemble equipment as required. You will bring any concerns on equipment condition and safety to the master course builder or judge prior to the beginning of the run.

Second to seeking volunteers, we are seeking donations of some items such as bottled water, G2 Gatorade, Sodas, Snacks, etc.

If you would be interested in helping out or would like to male a donation, then please reach out to me or Carla McGrath for more details. On behalf of the NKC Agility committee, we all truly appreciate the support.

Thanks so much,
Tanya

P.S. This picture is brought to you for your laughing pleasure from Victor, while I pathetically chase him.
This photo was taken a few years ago when we first started learning. Needless to say, agility is a lot of fun! 🐾 ❤️

Do you own an altered dog?

If so, then you really don't want to miss out on the NKC July Shows!!! The NKC Show weekend taking place on July 13th and 14th are doing a discounted Price for the Altered Class! Only $15.00 an entry! There will be prizes for Best Altered in Groups and of course BAIS!!!

There are so many reasons why a dog may end up altered. It doesn't mean they don't meet the breed standard or that they wouldn't have made an excellent contribution to a breeding program had they been chosen to be used.

Showing in the unofficial classes has been a wonderful experience for Victor and I. Late in 2023 we tossed our collar into the Veteran Ring and also had a blast. However, Victor is all about saving money (so he has more money for dog treats). So I think for July only, my four legged best friend is going to return to the Altered ring once again for some fun.
He finished 2023 as
#1 Altered Standard Wire Haired Dachshund
#1 Altered Hound
#3 Altered for All Breeds

And was awarded the NKC Award for Best Altered Dog in the club.

The best thing is, there really is no pressure or stress. When I say it is fun, it really is. ❤️

Who else is going to bring their altered dogs out?

P.S. Victor wanted me to post a couple of pictures of the big, gorgeous ribbons to attract your attention. 🐾
