On July 27, 2010 an email brought the impending deaths of multiple dogs to my attention. Through a flurry of emails, phone calls, text messages, facebook postings, and random intervention - I was able to put together a dream team and save 3 wonderful dogs. My friend HR had picked one (B&W), I had picked one (Brindle), and at the very last minute I picked a second one (brown). I saw her face, and e

ven though I knew I couldn't keep her I knew I couldn't leave her behind. They were pulled from the ex*****on line at a rural Georgia shelter the morning of 7/28, by a kind stranger I've never met but spoke to on the phone. They made their way from that car, to my friend JC's in Atlanta, where they stayed a few hours. (I haven't seen JC since 1988ish). My friend SFR (who I hadn't seen since 1981) picked them up from Atlanta that day and transported them up to Aiken, SC where they all spent the night. The next morning SFR loaded the 3 pups in her car and headed north toward my friend HR and I. We met up at a rest stop in NC. From there, HR and I took the 3 pups to VA. By the time we got here, all 3 little girls had been named - Piglet (B&W), Guinness (Brindle), and Peanut (brown). Peanut stayed with a foster mother who couldn't keep her (having 2 dogs and a cat of her own) and is now in a kennel but thriving and still hoping for that forever home!
* I'd love for Peanut to have the same loving life as me ... so, please pass this along to anyone who may be interested in this sweet loving little girl! *

Yay - great news!! Thank you Minnesota!!

MINNESOTA - WE DID IT!

Our bill to remove breed restrictions in homeowners insurance policies passed today. We believe that this bill is a step in the right direction to create equitable access to pet ownership across the state of MN. We know that this bill will set an example for other states across the country - to remove barriers to pet ownership.

We want to give a special thank you to our lead authors - Sen. Bobby Joe Champion and Representative Liz Reyer and to our The Humane Society of the United States - Minnesota State Director, Zack for working tirelessly on this bill during this legislative session.

And thank you to all of you for sharing your stories with us and for trusting us to introduce this legislation over the last 7 years.

WE FINALLY DID IT!

In her 3 days with us, Athena knew love…rest in peace beautiful girl💔

We know that three days of kindness can’t erase the abuse inflicted on Athena, but we are so humbled that you, our incredible rescue community, helped us show Athena that she was safe and loved. The damage to Athena’s intestines was too severe for her to recover. A cloth object had wound its way through her stomach into her intestines and caused her intestines to knot into sections. Her intestines had perforated in other areas and the fibers embedded into her intestine walls. There wasn’t enough healthy tissue to save. We had to make the heartbreaking decision to put Athena to sleep while she was under anesthesia.

Because of your devoted support, Athena had everything she needed to move on. But, we can’t help but wish for more for her. Athena is gone, but her memory will live on. We have requested Athena’s ashes and paw print to memorialize this special angel. We ask that you memorialize Athena today by visiting our Percy’s Promise advocacy project in her honor: rbari.org/percyspromise. The purpose of this project is to identify and prevent the abuse and neglect of pit bulls, one dog at a time and one person at a time. You are that person, and through your advocacy, together we can remember Athena with love in our hearts and a promise to combat animal cruelty.

Please consider advocating now using our easy to follow template. We honor Athena, Percy and so many others by being their voice. Visit rbari.org/percyspromise for step by step directions and a template letter, along with how to find your local representatives. Dog abuse is happening in our backyards right now, and it is up to each of us to reach out to lawmakers to demand change. Be the change you want to see in the world – please do it today for Athena.

Our hearts are broken, but we know that Athena knew love and comfort in her life, with thanks to you, the amazing staff at Oradell Animal Hospital, her angel Moe and our incredible partners at Jersey Pits rescue. Please remember Athena with love in your hearts and a promise to combat animal cruelty together. It is time to run free beautiful angel Athena!
