The CDC has changed the requirements for dogs traveling to the United States as of August 1, 2024 again. There is a new form available, which can be found on the the CDCs website. Dogs will still need to be at least 6 months of age to travel from Canada to the United States, but no longer require a certificate to be filled out by a veterinarian. As always, a valid Rabies vaccine is required to return to Canada from any country.
You can also check out Dr. Scott Weese's worms and germs blog for more information https://www.wormsandgermsblog.com/

Updates to CDC’s August 1 dog importation rule: If you are bringing a dog into the US from a dog rabies-free or low-risk country, you now only need to fill out the simple CDC Dog Import Form. Other forms are no longer needed. The requirements for dogs arriving from high-risk countries have not changed, and these dogs are still required to have additional documents. She enjoys working with all species and values building strong relationships with her clients. For all our clients with pets traveling to the United States or planning too, please be aware of the following changes brought about by the CDC. Please contact the clinic if you have any questions regarding your pets travel to the states as they will need microchips and up-to-date rabies to travel. Please note, like all other small animal exports, you will be required to provide all CDC documentation needed for your travel, as it will not be provided for by the clinic. We will continue to give updates as they come, but please know these changes are not brought about by the Canadian government or individual clinics, this is brought about by the US government, and must be followed with no exceptions. Thank you from the Highview team!

Starting on August 1, all dogs entering the U.S. (including those that left the U.S. and are returning, and regardless of the country they are coming from) must be:
• healthy upon arrival
• at least 6 months of age
• microchipped
• accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt and required vaccination and veterinary documents.

Additional requirements may apply depending on where the dog has been in the last 6 months and whether or not the dog was vaccinated in the United States.

Use CDC’s Q&A tool (the CDC “DogBot”) to determine what rules apply to your dog: https://bit.ly/2rww2bq

Happy international woman’s day! As a clinic that is almost entirely women (our office manager is the lonely brave male!) we are so proud of our fierce and strong female staff. There is a misconception out there that females can’t be large animals vets, that we are not strong enough or capable enough to handle the tasks that come with large and mixed practice, but we are proud to squash that stereotype! Happy international woman’s day everyone!

What a fun weekend! Dr Kim and RVT Morgan both had the opportunity to speak at a new event held at for RVT students and vet students called Spotlight: equine vet practice in Canada and were able to highlight how equine medicine plays a role in rural mixed practice. It was awesome to be a part of and exciting to see the number of students interested in equine medicine from all over Canada! Looking forward to next years event!

With the holiday season upon us, Arty wanted to send a reminder that while the holidays are filled with family and fun, there are dangers to your pets to keep in mind!

Make sure to keep those chocolate goodies out of reach as well as those shiny ornaments and tinsel which are foreign body magnets!

Also please remember to take stock of your prescriptions and get any refills called in and picked up before Christmas hours start. We will do our best to accommodate but pre planning around the holidays will save you and your pets unwanted stress.

Happy holidays and we hope you all have a safe and merry Christmas this year!

Some of you may have noticed that we were short a team member this summer for a few months. Our Dr. Regan was in Vietnam with Veterinarians without Borders! Check out her interview. We are so proud of her endeavors to better the lives of animals and humans locally and across international borders!

🌍🗣 Recently, we caught up with Dr. Regan McLeod, a VETS finishing a (combined remote and in-country) 9-month placement in ! As a from Alberta, Regan was inspired to join VETS to pursue her passion for international development and promoting in rural communities around the world.

When we asked her about the strengths of the VETS program in Vietnam, she said: “Women in Vietnam are traditionally involved in the day-to-day care of animals on farms but often defer to men when it comes to issues such as veterinary medications and care. By including women in (animal health worker) training programs, VETS is facilitating the role of women in animal health care and thereby improving disease surveillance and early treatment nationally.”

🎼When there’s something strange, in your neighborhood, who you gonna call…… 🎼. Our Dr. Dueck is getting suited up for some preg checking, but we have been told on multiple occasions that we closely resemble a ghost buster! Now while we may not be able to clear out the ghosts we can definitely tell you if your cows are pregnant! If you haven’t booked your preg checking for this year, there is still time, just give us a call!

It’s tech appreciation week and we decided to do a little scavenger hunt for our techs! RVTs (registered veterinary technicians) are an integral part of the day to day operations of a clinic. They are essential to the smooth running of surgeries and appointments. They need skills in restraint, anesthesia, surgery, clinical skills and have knowledge in both small and large animals. The wealth of knowledge our ladies hold is second to none and we are so lucky they are all a part of our highview team.

Who doesn’t love a weekend full of horses and learning!? Dr Stewart headed to Kentucky for AAEPs foundational skills continuing education course where they covered new skills in radiology, dentistry, ultrasonography, lameness and much more! She is excited to bring back what she learned to help you with your horses. It also didn’t hurt that she got to catch a few races while she was there either 😉.
