Boxer Rescue South Africa NPO Registration Number 173-975 NPO. NPC Registration Number 2016/299648/08. E-mail [email protected]. Email [email protected].

Legal Status: NPC Registration Number 2016/299648/08 OUR MISSION:
To assist Boxer dogs in crisis through responsible rehoming as well as education of the Boxer community about the breed’s physical and mental requirements, the importance of appropriate social and behavioural training, timeous sterilization, vaccination and microchipping. OUR VISION: Every Boxer dog will be viewed as a feeling, sen

tient being, a canine companion for a human who is fully aware of the breed’s physical and emotional needs. To see a South Africa where every Boxer dog that is unregistered with either the Kennel Union of South Africa (KUSA) or the Federation of Boxer Clubs of South Africa (FBCSA) is sterilized by 6 months. In addition, sterilisation should apply to those registered Boxers carrying genes for inheritable conditions such as congenital heart disease, hip and elbow dysplasia and juvenile kidney disease. Do not support backyard breeding (unregistered, no papers shown, unchecked rampant breeding with no thought for the health consequences - backyard breeders won't health screen both parents, for example hips, not least). Boxer Rescue South Africa does not get involved in any "helping to SELL" scenario. We have a strict protocol of home checks and home screening, as do all reputable rescue and animal rehoming organisations worldwide. These protocols are in place to protect the animals whose rehoming has been entrusted to us. The process involves an application to adopt which, if passed, is then followed by a comprehensive home check by a Boxer Rescue South Africa representative. We do not charge for this service, we simply insist as part of the adoption process that animals adopted through us are sterilised, microchipped and kept up to date on their vaccinations and deworming. Should the dog(s) you wish to adopt require any of these mandatory procedures, it will be for your account. This is also in keeping with globally accepted rehoming protocols and is done to protect the animals and ensure their continued wellbeing. We do not allow racial or hate-based comments. We will delete such posts and therefore urge all to voice opinions in a manner which is not based on race or ethnicity or any other grouping. Animal cruelty occurs across the board and is not exclusive to race, ethnicity, gender, age or income. Please respect the ethics of this Page and do not target all people based upon the aforementioned. There are even forms of animal cruelty which are unfortunately legally sanctioned in some Western countries (e.g. rodeos, bull fighting, throwing goats out of towers, burning bulls alive). This space is to provide Boxer lovers with useful information and notifications (not only about Boxer dogs in crisis up for rehoming or lost/found). Treatment and diagnostics are for your behaviourist's or vet's office - we only advocate COAPE and www.animal-behaviour.org.za Animal Behaviour Consultants of South Africa POSITIVE reinforcement

Kallie & Mika in the Cape. One of our favourite rescue stories. ( see album) Both are getting old and white - Kallie is 10 now.
Mika's hips are deteriorating a bit and while moving she is all ok but when standing her hips drop.
Kallie started to get a kind of a fit on and off and at night only. Not too severe but I was worried. The Vet put him on a light tablet for epilepsy and something for his kidney function. He is on it for almost a month and I can see the difference. Playfull, naughty and pure Boxer!

W CAPE: Cape Town - Gibson the Boxer & Jessie the Boston are looking for a forever home together. They have been through a tough time since their owner passed away & we are hoping to find them a great home that meets their needs.
Gibson is a male neutered Boxer aged 4 years. He is very social and loves playing with other dogs. He is energetic & although he was brought up on a small farm, he is not good with chickens, sheep & cats. He loves children & human companionship & is a typical Boxer goofball.
Jessie is a female sterilized Boston Terrier. Full of energy & keeps up with Gibson. She is queen bee and takes some time to adjust to meeting new dogs. She also adores children & sleeping on your bed but is trained to stay on her own if needed.
Both dogs love walks & are good on the leash & in the car. They are presently safe & staying with extended family but they cannot stay in this situation indefinitely.
To adopt Gibson & Jessie please email [email protected]

Some important info about play. 🎉

Some important info about play. 🎉

Being frantically chased is not play❌
You may have noticed this yourself. 👀....if play is allowed to get to that hyper, frantic play, signals are not given well, and not received well and that can lead to big issues.💥
Maybe you expect your dog to play with all other dogs.❓
Guess what ?
Dogs do not need to play with all other dogs, in fact it is healthy to be choosy with who they interact with.
Dogs have the right to consent to play or not.
Just because we wish them to play does not mean they consent.

Toys.
So many issues arise with dogs playing with their own toys around others they do not know.
They can be highly prized items. The simplest way to avoid issues is don't play with your dogs toy around other dogs you do not know and even if you DO know them caution is needed.
Many dogs do not like to share.

Pairing dogs with different play styles and energy can cause big problems.. A dog that constantly chases may not read the "cut off" signals given by the less energetic dog.

Always listen to the little voice inside....and if you are at all unsure, advocate and stop play, or don't allow it to even start.

Welcome to the family Ralph & Lily. On 1 August 2024 Ralph & Lily joined Ben Laing in Amanzimtoti,KZN. Ben adopted Sheldon from us in 2020 & is also an active volunteer in our team. Thank you to Cecile de Winaar who offered the pair a temporary home after their owner, Tommy passed away & the dogs had nowhere to go. Also huge thanks to Liesel & Derek who assisted with transport to & from the Shelley Beach Vet for their vacs & for meeting their new Dad.
“…. they are settling in very well, from routine to food time. Plenty playing and running around as boxers do, they never let one down 🥇🥇

They have attached themselves to me very quickly.
Yes Lilly is a bit bullish but that’s fine I will feed apart so no interference. She needs assurance & she responds to hand signs and I need to pat her then the tail goes. “
Looking forward to happy updates.

Another sad farewell to one of our senior rescues - Ru (Roo) was adopted in 2018 at the age of 6.5 years.
“Ru passed away tonight - we tried everything - she had a huge tumor on her spleen, which our vet removed, unfortuneatly she was very very weak & passed away after the op, my heart is broken”. Ru was nearly 12 years old & lived an amazing life with other dogs, Max, cats & the wonderful Murray Family. 💔💔 She was loved and she is already missed. With her goes another piece of my heart, until we meet again in heaven 💞 Run free sweet girl.

Do the words CALM & Boxer go together ?

CULTIVATING CALMNESS

We teach our dogs all sorts of things, but maybe don’t realise that teaching “calm” is also an important behaviour that has so many positive applications for both us and our dogs.

“Calm” can be defined as the absence of agitation or excitement; a feeling of tranquility; serenity and peace. These feelings are so often lacking in both our lives and that of our dogs.

Besides teaching dogs to settle on a mat or in another place or capturing and rewarding calm behaviour, here are some other ways to promote calmness.

Scenting or sniffing is a really effective and simple way to promote relaxation. It lowers the pulse rate and creates feelings of wellbeing.

Chewing is another powerful relaxation tool. Dogs use the chewing to relieve stress, frustration or anxiety. Chewing has a calming effect on the adrenal-pituitary axis in the brain which triggers the release of endorphins. It’s like self-medication for stress or anxiety.

Relaxing music that is specifically made for dogs can also work well, especially with dogs that get over excited in a car or have storm or firework fear.

When playing an exciting, high-energy game with your dog, take frequent breaks before starting up again to help your dog wind down and become calmer.

Aromatherapy, ear or other types of massage are other ways to help create calmness.

Cortisol holidays are also really important after a stressful event to prevent trigger stacking and allow cortisol levels to return to normal.

Conventional wisdom says that the ability to remain calm is a character trait that most of us lack, but Neuroscience teaches us that remaining calm under pressure is not an inborn trait, but a skill that needs to be learnt, practiced and managed and this applies to our dogs as well.

We received the shattering news today that Jack Sparrow has passed away very suddenly. He is just over 2 years old & celebrated his 1 year Gotcha Day in June.
“According to the vet he had a massive heart attack. He was still playing, then went outside to bark at dogs passing in the street and after a while we realized he hadn’t come back. Hendrik went outside looking for him and found him lying dead. It was at about 17:30. We are shattered. 💔” Our condolences to the Nelson Family - what a great short life he had - fishing with Dad, playing with his Peke siblings & his best friend was the cat. Please scroll through his photos as we remember this special boy

W CAPE : At Tears - He’s not even 2 yet! Meet George, the Boxer-Boerboel mix with the smooshiest face and the most boopable nose! George's journey began when he was rescued from a life of neglect and suffering, arriving at TEARS as a teenage pup. Severely underweight, with a severe mange infection and having led a sheltered life, he was terribly neglected and under-socialised.y

Initially scared and unsure, George has overcome his coyness and blossomed into a rambunctious boy full of life and bounce. His enthusiasm is evident in his signature move – a full-body wag when he's happy to see you! George is always on the hunt for cuddles, snuggles and a good game of rough and tumble.

As he missed out on socialisation during his puppy stages, George is still learning how to make friends with other dogs. He would benefit from attending Finishing School to learn the finer things in life. George is a big dufus who can sometimes forget just how big he is, so would thrive in a home with adults or teenagers. With lots of potential, George is looking for someone patient to invest time and training to help him be the best pooch he can be. Could you be the one George is waiting to meet?

As seen on Facebook “ We have had a few cases of mycotoxin poisoning recently. It’s not a poisoning that folks are generally familiar with, so we thought we'd share the information to raise awareness.”

Ingestion of mouldy food from the bin or a compost pile puts dogs, cats, horses, livestock, and even wildlife at risk for toxicity due to tremorgenic mycotoxins. These toxins may be found in MOULDY bread, pasta, cheese, nuts, or other decaying matter like compost. Clinical signs include vomiting, agitation, incoordination, tremors, seizures, and elevated body temperature. A specific mycotoxin called aflatoxin can even cause liver failure. Be sure to keep mouldy food and compost out of your pets reach!”

Our condolences to Astrid & Mathew who lost their precious Bella at the end of July - very tough losing 3 seniors in 1 year 💔

“Just to let u know that we had to send our Bella over the rainbow bridge last Friday. There was nothing more they could do about her pancreas problems and she was suffering, so it was time. She was 11 years and 4 months old.

We are devastated, but we knew the time was coming.

Carly is fine❤️. Still her normal, crazy, lovable self. She is safe and loved, a sunshine girl for sure 😍. Thank you to Astrid & Mathew for their special heart for seniors. 🥰
