Rachael Brown Equine Chiropractor Experienced McTimoney equine chiropractor and massage therapist (MSc, BSc) Horses can suffer from musculoskeletal discomfort in the same way that humans do.

Common problem areas include the neck, back and pelvic region and if left untreated discomfort in these areas frequently results in stiffness, reduced performance and uncharacteristic behaviour. The McTimoney technique is a holistic treatment which aims to relieve musculoskeletal discomfort by realigning and rebalancing the musculoskeletal system so that optimum health, comfort, soundness and perf

ormance can be restored. The treatment itself is extremely gentle and uses high speed adjustments to help release muscle spasm and stimulate correct alignment of the skeleton. In addition to the McTimoney technique, my treatments also use a combination of massage to help relieve muscle soreness and improve circulation, and passive stretching to help maintain full range of movement. Signs of musculoskeletal discomfort in horses include, but are not limited to, uncharacteristic behaviour such as bucking, rearing, a reluctance to move forward, spooking, an unlevel or uneven gait, asymmetry such as a stiffness on one rein or muscular asymmetry, disliking having the tack on and/or fidgeting when mounted. Prices are £60 for a horse/pony. Group discounts may be available for group bookings of 5+ horses/ponies at the same location. Please contact me for more information. Please note the treatment of animals is regulated under the Veterinary Surgeons Act (1966) therefore it is a legal requirement that Veterinary approval is obtained prior to the treatment of any animal. This can usually be obtained over the phone – many vets are aware of the benefits of complementary therapies such as McTimoney and are willing to give their approval provided the treatment is carried out by a qualified individual.

❓MY HORSE HAS A TENDON INJURY, CAN LASER HELP?

Yes, absolutely 💯

⚡️Laser therapy is a beneficial treatment for tendon injuries and can be used throughout the healing process.

🔴 In the acute phase, i.e. when the injury first occurs, laser therapy helps control the pain and swelling. Treating the injury rigorously during this phase helps reduce the inflammatory response (so hopefully less time on box rest and off work), and improve the chances of long term recovery.

🟠After the initial inflammatory response has subsided, the laser can be used to promote healing of the tendon fibres. It’s does this by stimulating collagen and ATP production in the cells, as well as increasing blood flow to the damaged area.

🟢 Laser therapy can continue to be used as the tendon heals. Regular treatments help the remodelling process by stimulating the maturation of collagen and the correct alignment of the tendon fibres. This strengthens the area and makes it less prone to re injury.

🩺 Regular scans of the area by a qualified vet are important during the treatment process. It is easy to see an external improvement in the tendon during the acute phase as the swelling reduces, but scans to see how the tendon is healing over time, help to better plan treatment schedules.

📍RIBCAGE ROTATION

This is something I see often and it can cause problems with saddle slip, straightness, correct bend and shoulder symmetry.

⬅️ The horse in the photos is an example of axial rotation of the ribcage to the left, indicated by the blue arrows which show misalignments in the thoracolumbar spine to the left.

🔴 The ribs attach to the thoracic spine, so when these vertebrae become restricted, or out of alignment, it will influence the ribcage as well as the spine itself. Rotation and tilt in the pelvis on the left side (blue line) further exacerbates the problem.

👉 The shoulders are influenced as the ribcage rotates to the left, so the left shoulder drops. This makes the the shoulder on the opposing side appear larger, however it is more helpful to think of a shift in the position of the shoulders rather than a physical change in size or muscle mass.

✅ Ribcage rotation can be improved by chiropractic manipulation to improve alignment through the spine and pelvis. Groundwork is also extremely helpful in the long term rehabilitation of these horses, with particular focus on balance and straightness ⚖️

Stand your horse square on a level surface.
1️⃣ Take a photo of your horse from each side, include the whole body and don’t forget the feet!
2️⃣ If it’s safe to do so, stand behind your horse and take a photo along their back (like the one on this post).
❓Does your horse look the same from each side and do they look symmetrical from behind?

I had the pleasure of treating this handsome pooch earlier in the week 🐶

His owner had noticed a few subtle changes in his behaviour and the way he was moving such as:

🐾 Nibbling his back paws when he was lay in bed
🐾 Struggling to jump into the car
🐾 A subtle change in his gait

The vet identified some tightness in his lower back but other than that gave him a clean bill of health 🩺

I treated him using a combination of gentle chiropractic adjustments to realign his spine and pelvis, followed by laser therapy to help relieve the muscle soreness in back.

He was lovely to work with and seemed to enjoy his treatment, especially the snooze when I’d finished 💤

He is booked in for a follow up treatment next week and I can’t wait to see how he’s feeling!

I run a monthly dog clinic at Tanglewood Dog Grooming Spa or home visits can be arranged depending on availability 📞0773691209 to find out more

❓SACROILIAC DISEASE OR MUSCLE ATROPHY

🔴 It’s clear to see that there is an asymmetry in this horses hind end, but is the problem muscular or is there a deeper problem with the underlying structure?

✅ Answer = the horse in the photo is an example of subluxation of the sacroiliac (SI) joint.

💪 The SI joint is a stabilising joint between the ilium of the pelvis and the sacrum. It is supported by a network of extremely strong ligaments which stabilise the area so it can withstand the huge forces generated by the hind limbs.

👉 If the ligaments around joint are compromised they can rupture and release the articulating bones. This causes the ilium and tuber sacrale (at the top of the pelvis) to raise upwards.

This is a relatively common injury in ridden horses and it’s something I see regularly in ex-racehorses and jumping horses.

You can assess your own horse by standing them square on a level surface and checking to see if the top of the pelvis is level ⚖️

ASA VET ORANGE 🍊 ADVANCED VETERINARY LASER THERAPY

I love this piece of equipment 🤩 The vet orange is a class 4 laser with a high power output (peak power 75w) and a built it pulsed function. This means it can reach deep into the tissues, whilst being completely safe to use.

🍊I use my vet orange laser regularly when I’m treating to help relieve muscle tension and treat trigger points within the muscle fibres. It can also be used on acute injuries such as tendons, ligaments and wounds, to help reduce pain and inflammation, and encourage tissue healing.

⏱️The high power output means that treatment times are really quick, making it a very efficient piece of of equipment.

Merlin definitely approves🐴

❓WHAT CONDITIONS CAN BE TREATED WITH LASER THERAPY ⬇️

Laser therapy works to reduce pain and inflammation, and encourage tissue healing, making it a worthwhile treatment for a variety of both acute and chronic problems.

💥 I often incorporate laser therapy into my treatments to help soothe muscle tension and treat trigger points within the muscle. However, this is just one of multiple conditions that can be treated with laser therapy.

Examples of other conditions that can be managed with laser therapy include:-
✅ Osteoarthritis
✅ Back pain/disorders
✅ Tendon and Ligament injuries
✅ Wounds
✅ Skin Disorders
✅ Post surgical swelling
✅ Laminitis

Has your horse ever had laser therapy? I’d love to know what they were treated for in the comments below ⬇️

I just love feedback like this 🤩

This horse had a course of laser therapy to help with some muscle tension, in addition to her usual maintenance treatments, and her owner felt a clear difference afterwards 🐎

⚡️ I include laser therapy as part of my treatments, and in some circumstances I may recommend it as a sole treatment to combat a specific problem area.

⚡️DID YOU KNOW I NOW OFFER LASER THERAPY⚡️

Laser therapy can be used to reduce inflammation and accelerate the bodies natural healing process.

❓HOW DOES IT WORK (the science bit 🤓)
The laser is placed in direct contact with the skin, enabling light photons to pe*****te the tissue and interact with molecules within the cell.

This causes several biochemical effects within the cell, a process known as photobiomodulation.

THE RESULTS…
✅ Increases the temperature of the tissue which has a soothing effect.
✅ Increases vascular supply to the tissue.
✅ Provides energy for cell repair.
✅ Reduces the transmission of pain signals.

Laser therapy can be incorporated into your horses overall treatment, or when appropriate it can be offered as a stand alone treatment.

Some lovely feedback after one of my recent dog clinics 🐶

Roo came to me for treatment following a nasty accident which left him with 2 fractured neck vertebrae. During his veterinary treatment they also found he had arthritic changes in his spine.

His treatments comprise of some gentle manipulation (avoiding any areas affected by his injury) and massage, along with laser therapy.

His owner saw a clear improvement after his initial session and he’ll be back at my next clinic on Tuesday 26th November, to further check his progress 🤩

I hold a a monthly dog clinic at Tanglewood Dog Grooming Spa, near Ludlow. It’s a lovely, calm space and can accommodate dogs of all shapes and sizes!
