This beautiful horse might be 18 years old, but he still has great flexibility through his lower back!
After the neck, the lumbosacral region is the most flexible part of the horses back. For horses to properly engage the hindquarters, it’s vital that the lower back is mobile and pain free.
Stimulating the reflex points on the hindquarters is a great way of checking for lumbosacral mobility.
Performing this exercise regularly as part of your horses stretching routine will not only help improve mobility in the lower back, but also encourages engagement of the core muscle groups.
You can download my online stretching webinar for more information and examples of improving your horses flexibility…

The lovely Viv having his pelvis adjusted as part of his treatment the other day 🙌 Viv competes at PSG level dressage and has been struggling with his changes recently. Maintaining the symmetry in his pelvis is important so he can move comfortably and consistently through the transition. It’s fairly common for horses with asymmetry in the pelvis to struggle with canter, and this can happen at any level of training. Picking up the incorrect canter lead, losing balance through transitions, lack of balance on one rein, struggling to maintain the canter, becoming disunited and bunny hopping or bucking are all indications that your horse may benefit from a chiropractic treatment. How does your horse feel is canter? 🐎
It’s the subtle things you have to look out for ❤️ I had the pleasure of treating this ex racehorse today and she was so sweet with her releases! Nose twitching and blinking before showing her full appreciation with a yawn! As a therapist it’s lovely when horses give you signs that they are enjoying the treatment but not all horses will give big, expressive releases. It’s important to remember the subtle signs are just as important 🥰
Warming up through an S bend of poles 🐎 This is a great exercise to get a horse concentrating at the start of the session. It’s good for balance and proprioception, as well as suppleness. I like to ride the exercise in walk with a low head and neck position so the horse can look and process what’s being asked of them. It’s important to take your time and allow the horse to navigate the poles slowly and correctly. Have a go with your horse and let me know how you get on in the comments ⬇️
And release… 🥱 Nothing beats a good yawn when you’re enjoying a treatment!
Adjusting misalignments in the lumbar spine 🙌This mare was only 5 and it was her first treatment. It’s a great example of how gentle McTimoney chiropractic is for horses, and how readily they accept it 🤩
Massaging the brachiocephalic muscle at the base of the neck 🐴
ABOUT ME - PART THREE 👩🎓 Find out more about me and me qualifications!
This is a perfect example of why I’m always recommending polework 🤩
You can clearly see the difference in Nottie’s trot as he goes over the poles…
💪 The thoracic sling muscles are recruited to lift the shoulder
💪 The core muscles are engaged
💪 Increased flexion of the front and hind limbs
As he moves over the poles, Nottie becomes more engaged, with his hindquarters stepping underneath him and lifting up off the forehand.
This is a really simple exercise to set up at home with poles placed approximately 4ft apart and raising alternating ends of the poles.
You may need to adjust the distance between the poles to suit your horses stride length.

Do you own an older horse or pony?As horses and ponies age their posture changes and they tend to become increasingly dipped over their backs and show weakness around the lumbosacral and sacroiliac regions of their spine. Like people, they are also prone to age related diseases such as osteoarthritis.McTimoney chiropractic is a great way of maintaining mobility and comfort in the older horse. It is very gentle, can be tailored to the individual, and when combined with massage and gentle mobilisations it helps combat stiffness. I’m also able to offer advice on appropriate exercises for older horses to help maintain suppleness and core strength without over doing it!
