The Muzzle Up Project Muzzle Up! promotes safety and education on muzzles and dog behavior, and aims to reduce the stigma associated with dogs who have to wear them.

In the world of dog behavior, one of the most essential pieces of safety equipment we have is the muzzle. Unfortunately, their appearance and the judgments associated with them prevent their usage, sometimes with tragic consequences. Dogs’ welfare suffers when humans fail to use muzzles. They miss out on walks, trips to dog parks, and other key socialization opportunities that contribute to a ha

ppy and healthy dog. Muzzles allow dogs to operate safely in our confusing, sometimes frightening world. While positive reinforcement training techniques can address a dog’s aggression, and in many cases result in successful behavior change, many dogs need to wear muzzles during and after the training. This is for others’ safety, and many times for the safety of the dogs, too. If a dog develops a bite history, particularly a history of biting another person, that dog risks being relinquished to a shelter, being labeled a dangerous dog, and possibly being put to sleep.

Trust Your Dog's Expanding Worlds Fund 🌎

Muzzles have the power to save lives and to open doors. It can be especially difficult to find the right muzzle for hard-to-fit dogs, making the right muzzle even less accessible. Custom, handmade-to-fit muzzles are not always cost effective, no matter how hard Trust Your Dog strives to personally lower our cost. By making a small donation to the Expanding Worlds Fund you can help someone in need purchase a low cost or free muzzle.

If you're in need: Trust Your Dog is founded upon TRUST. If your dog or your rescue organization is in need of a muzzle and you are unable to find a standard market muzzle that fits AND can not afford to budget for a Trust Your Dog muzzle, this program is for you.

This group has put a ton of work into gathering info on muzzle sizing, and can offer you help on choosing muzzles based on your dogs measurements.

These forms are for those who need extra help with sizing and fitting a muzzle. MTT can help you with the whole process taking the confusion and (most of the) effort out of it. The forms will explain what measurements, pictures, and information we need and why.

✨MUZZLE UP MONDAY✨

Name: Buster

Breed or Mix: Mix

IG: .dingo.boi

'Likes': Anything edible, playing with dog friends, snuggles

'Dislikes': Sharing food and toys, getting bathed, loud children

Type/brand of muzzle: Leerburg poly coated basket muzzle

Their muzzle story : Buster is great with other dogs - unless it comes to sharing balls, sticks, food, etc. He can also be leash reactive on walks. Muzzle training has given us the opportunity to go to the dog park more often (so he can run and socialize) and also gives us more space to work on leash reactivity training when people see the muzzle on our neighborhood walks.

We also wanted him to get comfortable wearing one in order to become socialized with children, as their sudden movements and loud squeals get him quite anxious right now. He has never bit anybody, but given his anxiety it allows for safe introductions and makes room for positive reinforcement training in situations that otherwise would not be available to him.

If you are looking to muzzle train your dog, my two words of advice would be: Go slow - don't expect immediate results. Second would be to not allow others' judgement prevent you from doing what's best for your pup. Many people will ask, give you looks, etc. At the dog park I explain he's not aggressive, but is very passionate about stealing toys. That's usually enough to set people at ease and even give him some bum scratches if he is near them.

✨MUZZLE UP MONDAY✨

Dog's Name: Duncan

Dog's Breed or Mix: Bichon Frise/Min Pin/Yorkie/several other things

IG:

'Likes': Cuddles, giving kisses, squeaky toys, cheese, playing fetch, playing in the snow, getting in the car

'Dislikes': New people until he has met them ~5 times, being touched unexpectedly, other dogs in his space, when the car starts moving

Type/brand of muzzle: Leerburg 82C

Their muzzle story: Duncan is a rescue and has come SO far facing a lot of his fears, but still has a ways to go. He is extremely friendly with people he knows, but is very nervous when meeting new people. He also is not a big fan of going to the vet. We decided to start muzzle training after a few incidents of nipping. When wearing his muzzle, Duncan is much more confident and willing to interact with the things that scare him. We love our little man, and we are very thankful that we have another tool in our kit to help him thrive!

Okay I know AND you know that there’s more to just having an unrestricted pant when you’re looking at whether a fit is good for a particular muzzle. However, I think this is the best place to start.

So many muzzles were originally intended to keep a dog’s mouth closed to prevent biting. This is why so many designs taper towards the tip of a dogs nose AND why it’s so hard these days to find a good fit with standard sized muzzles AND why when looking a breed sized recommendations they can be really misleading.

Why shouldn’t a muzzle hold a dogs mouth shut? Well, if the dog is going to be in that muzzle for any length of time it becomes a safety hazard. Dogs don’t sweat to cool off, they pant. If they can’t open their mouth they’ll overheat. Additionally, if the dog is ill and is vomiting they can aspirate (choke on their own vomit 🤮) in a muzzle. Not to mention it’s just uncomfortable and restricting to have their mouths held shut. *Autonomy is a reinforcer and a basic need for all organisms*

Edit in comments!!!

So what are the downsides to having a muzzle that allows a full pant? 1️⃣Well, if the muzzle is made out of a flexible material (fabric or biothane) it decreases its ability to prevent a bite, especially for larger dogs. 2️⃣ A full panting circumference/height creates more vertical space in a muzzle which might allow the muzzle to go over a dog’s eyes when running or resting. Personally, I think this is okay since those moments are greatly outweighed by the good fit 90%+ of the time. And can be compensated for with a shorter nose length.

It is so important get a full panting measurement OR height when measuring for your muzzle. I, personally, don’t need both because one will usually get me pretty close to the other. 😉 I made a chart! But if you can get both fantastic!!!
of.clark thanks for being such a beautiful model!

✨MUZZLE UP MONDAY✨

Breed: Dachshund

IG: .thehotdog

'Likes': Sniffaris, treats, apples especially, playing fetch and sleeping

'Dislikes': 80% of dogs, strangers and sudden noises

Type/brand of muzzle: Baskerville

Their Muzzle Story: Kobe is not an "aggressive" dog but there are definitely triggers that set Kobe off - mostly doggos/ strangers not respecting his need for space. Kobe has never bitten another dog before but has nipped at one who has gotten too close for comfort. While we have now removed him from all dog runs/ parks, we cannot control/ ensure other owners give us the space we need (while we are walking/ on sniffaris)

At vet visits, Kobe is extremely fearful and with good reason (i hate the dentist too and i myself get bad anxiety) so we should not expect our dogs to feel "ok" with going to the vets.

The muzzle would 100% come in handy during these times especially when he needs to get his vaccination/ needs to get checked out; having our own muzzle means he is comfortable with wearing it (with proper conditioning of course) and we get to protect the vet/ handler and Kobe. So far, it's been easy having to condition Kobe to the muzzle because he is very food motivated and is completely ok with having to wear the muzzle.

Many people have the mindset that it's cruel and only "aggressive" dogs need the muzzle and have been asking me "why do you muzzle him for? he looks so harmless"

Well yes, Kobe is harmless until you disrespect his space/ try to pet him when he does not want to be pet. (same for all humans - if a random stranger comes up and touches me without my permission, i will definitely smack him/her in the face lol)

I hope more dog owners would see that muzzle training should be a part of every dog owner's skillset just like how one teaches their dog to sit/ stay etc, we should all move towards muzzle training and keeping everyone safe.

To all those who are unsure/ thinking of muzzling your dog - do your research, find proper muzzles that do not restrict them from panting/ drinking water/ taking treats and slowly condition your dog to the muzzle so that he/ she will feel it's just an accessory like wearing a bowtie/ bandana out.

Name: Gunner

Breed: German Shepherd

IG:

Likes: Hikes, Chest pets, and Squeaky balls

Dislikes: Being a few minutes late for meal time

Type/brand of muzzle: Freedom/M9/m10 Wire Basket

Their muzzle story: This is Gunner! We began to muzzle train because all these people were getting new dogs or puppies.. and letting them be off leash with minimal to no training. It wasn’t only stressing him out, but myself as well. We always used the park as a way to get away, be us, focus on just us and training. But.. that was slowly being taken over by anxiety about what dog will come up to us next with no owner in sight. Muzzling didn’t only give us another level of protection, it gave us peace of mind, confidence, and the ability to be an advocate for ourselves.

✨MUZZLE UP MONDAY✨

Name: Sydney

Breed or Mix: Australian cattle/great pyraneese mix

IG:

'Likes': Cheese, sleeping, and stealing socks

'Dislikes': Fireworks, squirrels, and sharing toys

Type/brand of muzzle: Khaos Kollars

Their muzzle story: When we first adopted Sydney, she was your typical, all-loving pup! She had no issues with people, or other animals. We tried so hard to properly socialize her to ensure she would continue to be friendly and social. At 4 months old, she broke her leg in a freak accident which caused us to keep her from doing normal puppy things such as playing, socializing, and getting out that puppy energy!

As she grew, she showed signs of being dog reactive, and I was so unsure on how to handle her. I believe part of this stemmed from us not keeping up with her socialization when she was hurt. We went to many training classes that helped tremendously, but we still were not comfortable getting to close to other pups even when she showed some positive reactions to them.

Eventually we came across this amazing muzzle community, and we have learned so many things from some great people and pups. We have learned how to muzzle train Sydney, and to be advocates for her best interests and safety! Sydney’s muzzle helps not only her, but helps us feel more comfortable and confident while she plays and coexists with other pups!
